Random thing you loathe right now.

Just finished see phone calls trying to find my package that got forwarded. It's been nearly a month without an update. Basically got told I'll just have to wait more.

They were nice and polite about it at least.

Edit: Another one for today. I may have accidentally updated 20,000 records when I meant to update 1. Whoops. Unimportant environment, unimportant data, and no one has noticed, but its the principle of the thing.

My favourite interview question: what’s your favourite code-related book or blog? I don’t care about the answer (other than sometimes finding new things to read); I care that they have one - that isn’t stackoverflow - and that they can get excited about it.

EDIT: moving to “How’s work been?”

Due to a combination of injury and illness I’ve been unable to walk anywhere since before the pandemic. I finally got a second cortisone shot and my mobility drastically increased, so I went to the local gas station to buy a lottery ticket to celebrate. The guy working there pretended not to understand me, mocked me for how I walked, and mocked me for how I was dressed. I couldn’t understand what he was saying, but I paid attention to his gestures and that his buddy was laughing with him after every gestures and comment. He’d point at his pants (I accidentally grabbed a pair that was too big so I had to hike it up a bit that exposed my boxers) and laughed with his buddy while taking a quick look at me. I really thought for a good minute or so whether or not I wanted to call him out for his behavior because it was so obvious, but I figured that’d be too much trouble for me, I needed to get back home sooner than later to rest my legs. But it was completely obvious they were mocking me because as I moved around the store to buy some other items they’d be pointing what I assume they thought subtly and make comments in a language I can’t speak. I also didn’t want to risk the tiny chance I was wrong, but given how I’ve seen them act with other people (this isn’t new behavior, the mechanics I’m friends with at the same gas station confirm that they tend to mock everyone one who comes in, even if they work there) I’m 95% sure of what happened. But the good thing to come out of this is that my upper limit for walking is closer to 300-400 feet instead of the 150-200 it used to be!

Good that you increased your distance.

Our McDonalds is actually over 1000 feet away - each way - so even better!

Wasn't McDonald's, it was the gas station, but they're practically next door. Regardless that makes me feel even better about the walk, despite the other stuff that happened.

Broke down and asked a question on stackoverflow for the first time in ages. Now we wait and see if it gets closed as a duplicate of something from 2012.

And then eternally reopened/closed as you debate whether it's actually a duplicate or if both issues just involve one similar element?

Went to the gas station again because that’s where the closest subway is. Got my sandwich, got a bag of chips and a drink. Drink is fine, sandwich is fine. Go to open my chips and saw that they expired in… January. They were the first item available in that line on the shelf. So I just called the health department because they had no problem selling expired food to people. Yes I’m keeping the bag incase it’s needed. I’m just so angry, especially because it’s my favorite flavor of chips too.
Edit: Not gonna go back to that subway, even though the chips are from a different part of the building, they’re both owned by the same group and I do not like what happened. It’s a shame because now the only walking distance place is McDonalds. The previous owners would never have allowed that. Hopefully I don’t get sick. >.>

Yeah you have to careful of that especially it new stores. Went to a grocery that was selling milk that was basically expiring the next day. Yuck.

I always check the dates. I have been burned multiple times at the QFC near me. Once I seen bread that was just covered in mold. Made a sandwich and ate half of it before noticing the odd taste. The lunch meat was green. I had bought the meat the same day. Then a few days ago I notice they have these vegan cupcakes. All of them expired in January.

So I always check the dates on everything and take from the back.

Yeah, I’m usually on guard and had been checking some of the dates of other flavors and they were literally a week or two from expiring, but then I saw my favorite flavor and picked that without thinking to check, because I had been primed. Made it home and noticed that it said Jan out of the corner of my eye. I assumed it was a mistake because I tend to have that happen, but no. And they have a history of stocking food that is about to spoil or that has spoiled, I just finally had enough and decided to report them as this isn’t even the second or third time that exact situation has happened. I don’t know if the gas station is owned by the subway franchise owner or vice versa or if they’re separate, but I am not going to go back again for food.

Sell By dates aren't usually an indication that the food will be spoiled after that date, certainly not for salty food like chips that will remain palatable for literally years after that date.

They're a stock-keeping tool, for the most part.

Obviously exceptions to that rule exist e.g. dairy and meats, but for processed foods, if it passes the sniff test, eat away.

With that said, you're entirely wasting your time punitively calling the health department.

People who compare wearing masks to Nazi ideology.

There is a difference between a sell by date, and (at least here in the EU) a use by date. Even then you can use your digression a little - if that milk carton a little past it's use by date doesn't smell off then it probably isn't.

Remember that in America, food regulation has been entirely captured by the Food Industry.

Confused by Date Labels on Packaged Foods?
Here’s how to know if your food is still good to eat while also reducing waste in your home.

"Used by" in america specifically refers to a date that isn't related to safety but as a tool for retail stock management.

Wife and I just had a conversation about this last night. I was looking for sour cream and she said she threw it out because it was two weeks past the sell by date. I had just had some with my lunch the day before and it was fine.

Truth be told, I'm not that surprised. When we moved back into the area I had my state inspection done at that particular gas station and they quoted me about $1900 to get it to pass. It needed new brakes, rotors, and wipers, which I have no problem doing myself. Then $600 for an "upper engine torque strut" which they apparently decided they needed to completely replace instead of the $10 bushing that was the part that actually failed. And $50 for a plastic locking piece for the battery, that was literally zip-tied to a hose right next to where it was supposed to clip in.

Cost me about $150 in parts to fix everything myself. That whole place is a scam.

If yogurt is past the expiration date, does it go bad, or does it just become extra yogurty?

If you eat it, that's the date you expire.

As a point of interest, two days later not a single answer - not even a random one that didn't understand the question. Never seen that happen before. Is stackoverflow finally dying?

Cops just stopped by and let me know a registered sex offender has moved in next door. The house is up the hill and through some woods from me, but yeah. Possession of child pornography. I have a 12yo and a 15yo.

Our neighbor directly behind us is awaiting trial for the same thing. They just put in a big inflatable pool and he's been outside almost every day. Makes me real uncomfortable when my kids want to go out back and play in the sprinkler.

The lack of Wilson's dialogue in Castaway.. he could have been voiced by Tim Allen!

Someone should dub in Buzz Lightyear's dialogue into Castaway. Over all the movies and shorts, I'm sure there's enough random lines to make an absolutely hilarious cut.

It would also be funny to use Tom Hanks lines back at him.

Just yesterday as I was walking my dog I came across an obviously fresh, massive pile of steaming dog dook... right next to the dedicated dog dook receptacle which has a poop bag dispenser bolted to it. The dispenser must have been out of bags, right? Nope!
