Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

I must be insanely lucky. I haven't had a single console that broke on me before moving on to the next iteration. No red rings, no yellow lights, not even a jet-engine PS4.

Perhaps drifting controllers are my karma equalizer.

I had a GameCube of all things that errored out when reading discs. It was the later Platinum system that came with Metroid Prime bundle after I traded in my launch system for that. I just never liked the indigo so finally had a good reason. But since it was less than a year old Nintendo fixed it for free and it still worked last time I tried it a couple years ago.

And the only other hardware failure was a DS Lite. That one might be my fault as I found a quarter in the game card slot when I took it out of my bag. Quite possible that fried it. But again, it was a newer Zelda triforce system that I had upgraded to and traded in my phat DS to get. Sent it to Nintendo and they fixed it. Stated system motherboard failure or something like that. They even returned my 3rd party screen protector that I forgot to remove.

My NES and SNES still work. N64 too.

So yeah Nintendo is pretty good with the hardware and in my experience fixes it when they are not.

Does anyone follow some Nintendo focused/specific (if not exclusive) news sources?

I'm getting annoyed by how sites like Gamespot have Switch coverage, but lumps it all together. Like they'll post a review for a game that's POTENTIALLY coming or scheduled to be on Switch, but then it won't be available at the time of the review, and the review won't have any Switch specific details like how it performs.

I get why they'd do that, but I primarily game on Switch these days and I don't want to read about stuff I can't play or games that have no Switch specific information.

It's also kind of annoying how sites like MetaCritic let you sort by release date but then put the near infinite number of "TBA" titles at the top, which is... stupid.

They're my go to for Switch reviews lately, and usually talk about performance.

Usually comes up when I Google game name switch review.

I take a look at NintendoLife fairly regularly.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Stele.

During the sell I got Hard West, Dungeon Nightmares collection, and State of Mind for $2 each. Hard West is turn base xcom lite type game. Make a deal with the devil and get returned back to life to kill people in a old west setting.

Dungeon Nightmares I guess came out before on something. It is horror game with randomly generated levels. Couldn't find a review of the remastered collection but the review of the first game makes it seem interesting. Each night you fall asleep you wake up in a dungeon. No combat in this game. Got to play avoid the monsters.

State of Mind seems to be a story game that takes place in the future or in your mind or maybe both. Reminded me of that one game with multiple android stories going on. One story had a detective android solving a crime. Another story had a android lady taking care of a little girl. The last story was about androids trying to get their freedom. I forget the name of it but the gameplay is the same in State of Mind.

Slate: A New Game Out-Nintendos Nintendo
The Wild At Heart is Pikmin, but … better?

Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

...The differences between the two series are subtle, but after playing them back-to-back, I’m convinced that The Wild at Heart’s changes are improvements on Nintendo’s “resource management-plus-cutesy minions” formula...

Pikmin kinda sucks so I’m sure this game is better, but what business does it have in the Switch thread if it isn’t on Switch?

The original Pikmin had a nice streak of melancholy and loneliness, with a hint of desperation that I thought added a wonderful texture to the whimsy and cuteness. I was sorry to see that the sequels mostly got rid of that part.

As an Xbox game pass subscriber, I’m grateful for the recommendation. I’m also a Switch owner.

Wild at Heart is included on game pass.

Wouldn’t that mean you’d see it in the game pass thread, then?

Keith seems to like to troll Nintendo threads, makes me think the post was not exactly in good faith. It should reach the intended audience in the Xbox/GP threads.

What, no. It’s a well-written article about a beloved Nintendo series so it’s nice to see what other developers have done with the formula. Under your rubric it would have be forbidden to discuss Stardew Valley here before it was released on Switch despite its strong inspiration the original Harvest Moons. I don’t follow any XB/GP thread since my X360 has been dormant since 2013, but if anyone would like to post about the game there, be my guest. (Probably a lot less Pikmin love there though.)

Ok, fair enough, my bad.

Cross-posting from the Pokemanz thread:

Out of nowhere release dates were revealed for the upcoming Pokemon games on Switch.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are releasing November 19th, 2021, which makes sense as they typically release Pokemon games in time for Black Friday shopping.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus, meanwhile, is releasing January 28th, 2022, which is a lot closer to the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl release than I expected.

What will we see?
- 1st glimpse of DQ XII?
- DQ 4-6 on Switch?
- DQ Monsters Joker 3?
- fixing the crappy DQ 1-3 port?
- DQ Walk outside of Japan?

Well, the logo and nothing else, but okay, I guess.

- Them teabagging all their fans not living in Japan...updates for Japan-only DQX including an offline mode
- One good-looking remake of a game already available globally, DQ III, to be in Octopath format.

Well, at least they're working on a lot of stuff...

Half of those games being Japan-only is no surprise. It's Dragon Quest, after all, which has never been big in the States or International. Especially not surprised that they'd hype DQ X updates despite no plans on releasing that MMO internationally.

What is odd is that it sounded like there were no plans to bring the X Offline version over, but that could always change.

I mean, none of it surprised me. I thought it was a nice presentation all in all. I'm more curious about what they meant saying the combat would be changed for XII.

There's a Dragon Quest MMO? I realize I live under a rock, but this is literally the first time I've heard of that.

It was available for the Wii. So, it's a bit old.

I'm a little concerned about DQ XII going darker with branching paths and a new combat system. I doubt they're going to pull a Bomberman Zero, but still... Just gotta wait and see I suppose.

Dragon Quest III looks ... fine. I like the HD 2D look, but I've never been that enamoured with it. The Switch port that I'm playing now is good enough for me. This remake needs new content (like an Ortega playable side story) to convince me to pick it up.

Dragon Quest Treasures looks fun. I got sort of a Zelda/3D Platformer vibe to it, so I'm definitely interested.

The rest I couldn't care less about it.

I also want to note that I'm pretty sure no platforms were announced for any of these games (aside from "home consoles" on the Dragon Quest III remake), save the obvious mobile and DQ Online updates. So this should probably go in the JRPG's That Aren't Final Fantasy thread instead.

Sorry to play the part of Thread Cop, but while I imagine most of these will come to Nintendo platforms, no official platforms were announced yet.

You’ve summed it up there....it’s “good enough”, maybe. It’s a port of the maligned mobile port. Just off the top of my head....

(1) The graphics alone are jarring—bright smooth character sprites with solid borders but moving on a more traditional digitized slightly fuzzy environment.

(Edit: original image link failed. This image may be from the Switch ports of 1 or 2.)

(2) The font! Why did they use an intolerably boring font? It breaks with the rest of the style of the game and the rest of the series.

(3) IIRC the Switch combat isn’t animated. Conventionally the pinnacle version of DQ3 is said to be the Japan-only SNES version. It’s relatively popular online to discuss downloading fan-translated text and load them into a ROM but that’s too much work for me to have tried.

The 2D HD version finally gives us in the West the promise of the best version of the first game that took over Japan. It’s a spit in the face that the 2019 Switch edition doesn’t even have the basic features of a 1996 version. In what other industry would that be acceptable?

Hey, I agree the 2D-HD remake looks better and all things being equal I would take it over the Switch mobile port, but I'm still quite happy with the mobile port. I like the graphics and the lack of animation in combat doesn't bother me. I'd rather have Switch ports of IV-VI so I can continue my playthrough of the series.

I haven't played the SNES remake, but I have watched a few speedruns of the game. It looks solid.

DQIV is one of my favorite games ever and DQV is one of the greatest games ever so absolutely yes on that trilogy getting Switch treatment at some point. They just better fix the stuttering. It wasn’t so bad in 3 but any video of 1 or 2 really makes the jank obvious. Can’t find a short YT clip of that somehow though, despite being shown and discussed in every review.

For someone who has never played Pokémon in their life, but might be slightly curious about it and has a new switch, is there a version to buy at the moment that gives the typical Pokémon experience, or would the ones being announced for November be something to look out for?

Sword/Shield are an excellent entry point - streamlined and with modern-sensibilities, but captures the essential spirit of the franchise wonderfully.

Yeah, Sw/Sh is a good place, while pretty much any of them are fine because they're hand hold as heck.

Imho, get whatever is cheapest on the system you want to play it on most. Not that Pokemon goes down in value much.

The Let's Go games are also a good entry because you throw a Pokeball to catch things instead of having to battle before you catch. It's a slightly more simplified version of Pokemon.

These Switch Pro rumours are really heating up with almost every news site reporting on it. Sounds like we'll be getting an announcement before E3, so that other companies are free to announce their upcoming Switch Pro games. Hopefully this Tuesday?

Nintendo Switch Pro reveal expected before E3

Nintendo's long-awaited Switch upgrade is expected to be shown ahead of E3 2021, according to a report published by Bloomberg [paywall] today and Eurogamer's own sources.

Eurogamer specifically notes that they're using different sources from Bloomberg which are confirming the same information.
