What message do you get when you open a set of AirPods near an iPhone that it isn’t paired with?

So one of the lawn guys found a set of them while he was working and left them on my front porch, probably assuming they were mine since they were in my yard. They aren’t. I’ve put up a sign on my mailbox that they’ve been found in case the owner comes back looking.

When I opened the case I saw a pop up on my phone that said “Not your AirPods” and a prompt to pair. Is “Not your AirPods” the name the owner gave the device, or is that a generic message? I hope it’s the device name, as that will serve as a useful way to check for the real owner.

Well dang. Guess I might as well pair them to my phone and see if I can learn anything.

I found a fantastic app that let's me watch YouTube on my Apple TV with no ads!

It's called "Vookmark" and it's a video bookmarking app. Now instead of tagging via Watch Later for YouTube vids during my day, I instead use a Chrome bookmark or iOS share sheet shortcut to save a video to Vookmark.

Then later on in the day I fire up the Vookmark Apple TV app to play them. It's a little kludgy, but I've been AirPlaying from my phone anyway. Now I can go back to using a native app and remote.

YouTube does offer a way to pay for this.

YouTube is going to have to demonstrate that they can make an interface that actually responds predictably to inputs before I'll pony up money for features that every other iOS video app seems to include by default.

They kinda don't though. They "bundle" it in with YouTube music (which I don't want) for $15(!) per month - which is what I pay for HBO Max and more than I pay for Netflix.

I'd consider paying for a more reasonable priced ad-free or ad-light experience, and I'm actually fine with creator in-stream ads. Plus, I've been ad-blocking on desktop for ages now anyway.

Has anyone heard the news about Apple Music lossless audio? Does anyone understand it or what it will take to actually listen to it?

I've seen some headlines, but that's it. Apparently the $500 AirPods headset doesn't support the good audio.

Nor the iPhones. That's why I'm asking if anyone understands it. Because it seems like what happened is that Apple made an insane decision to get rid of the headphone jack, everyone complained about that, Apple said, "It's fine, trust us, 'Courage'" and then just 3 years later they came out with an audio format that doesn't work with current phones or headphones.

I'm reading that you can't even connect a lighting cable to it to get the lossless audio. I feel like I've been given crazy pills. That can't be right, can it?

Adding lossless is clearly a forward looking move. I look at it similarly to NVIDIA adding raytracing. It establishes the presence of a feature for the next generation of hardware to support. Apple's not charging extra for the feature.

You can't even connect a lightning cable to get lossless audio on AirPods.

Lightning port headphone jack to non-AirPod wired headphones should work.

Lightning port DAC + headphone jack to non-AirPod wired headphones should work for the 192 kHz high tier lossless.

I see. So it’s Apple’s stuff that doesn’t work out of the box with Apple’s own headphones. Does that include the DAC that Apple ships or do you need something better?

Yeah, my understanding is that it's because the AirPods don't really have a true wired analog mode. Instead, the AirPods are re-encoding analog input to a lossy digital signal. So while with normal wired headphones, you get:

digital lossless audio file -> analog lossless signal -> headphones

... with the AirPods it looks like:

digital lossless audio file -> analog lossless signal -> re-encoded to lossy digital signal using a codec AirPods supports -> AirPods headphones

Ultimately, AirPods are going to need to support the codec being used for lossless, or there will need to be some Bluetooth codec capable enough to reencode the Apple lossless audio file to an equivalent lossless Bluetooth codec.

For the high-end 192 khz lossless, it sounds like you need something like the DragonFly DACs which support 192 khz. I'm less clear on what supports what here.

It took me a minute to realize y'all were still talking about the AirPods Pro Max chonky headset, and I'm the one who brought that up. I was sitting here thinking "wait, how do you plug anything into those tiny earbuds for any sort of audio?".

Apple's been talking up the speakers on their new laptops and iMac models. Maybe this is aimed at them. And/or people who have an Apple TV plugged into their stereo.

I've understood that Apple can't call it lossless with the lightning to headphone adapter, since some loss is is going to happen regardless but to all intents and purposes it is lossless.

The bigger thing for most of us is that it's going to include Spatial Audio on all AirPods, as well as Atmos. That could potentially be pretty nice.

what does 32 graphics cores on the M1X equate to in an equivalent NVidia desktop GPU? would that be around a 1080ti?

It is hard to say because it depends a lot on how they use the cores and what speed they are. The 8 core version out now I think is about equivalent to an NVidia 1050, but last I remember reading most games have to be emulated anyway.

how apple says everything is the "best ever" or "biggest thing ever" makes me want to never buy a single one of their products.... have they been using this marketing strategy from the very start? it sucks that they won't let me fast forward or rewind their events to get to the parts i want. guess i have to wait for youtubers to review wwdc

They always do this, yes. And it's very obnoxious. Especially as right now iOS and MacOS are the least stable (in my experience) that they've been since the OS X transition.

As long as Apple keeps making meaningful improvements over the status quo when it comes to privacy, they can do all the silly rah-rah they want. I'm still in.

In Mexico I'm paying $99 pesos a month, which roughly translates to $4.99 (VAT included)
I could upgrade to $179 for the family plan ($9.01 USD, VAT included).

I'm not sure what exactly you could do this little piece of geographical pricing trivia, but if you ever start a pro-cons list for moving to Mx, now you have at least one reason.

Yes that has been their marketing style for at least 20 years. I usually just wait for the ArsTechnica article to be posted with the summary, they are pretty fast about putting them out.

To make it less stable? Maybe.

I just know I have to reboot either my computer or my phone at least once a week to get the bluetooth subsystem to work correctly.
