GWJ Online Boardgame Group

I think there's a thread in the regular gwj discord, though don't really look at it.

Am up for more bga. I just put a shout out recently on the gwj bga group if anyone fancies some async terra mystica. Other games enjoyed recently dungeon petz and res arcana.

I'd be up for that. Also posted in reply to your BGA post. I wish BGA would push notifications when there's a new post in the group. I just rarely remember to check it.

Yeah, I never check the BGA group either. Here or Discord seems like the best way to let folks know about new games.

In that spirit I've put up a game of Homesteaders on BGA: https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

I'm a big fan of Homesteaders and I'm really happy it's online now! The interface on BGA isn't perfect but gets the job done. For those that aren't familiar it is a worker placement engine building + bidding game. For those familiar with Vegas Showdown or Lancaster the bidding mechanic is similar. I really like:
* The bidding mechanic. It's a simple way of handling auctions that I find really fun.
* Building combos. There are a lot of different combos to build out and I like experimenting within the systems it has.
* Debt. Love how the debt system works, gives you lots of flexibility and there's good push/pull in making sure you can clear some of it out before game end.

For arranging async game on BGA it's possible to create a game there and select 'restrict table access', then 'restrict to group' selecting the Gamers with Jobs group. When the game is set up it creates a web-link for the table, you can then post on the group page, here in the forum, or over on Discord.

Cool.

Yep mostly async only for me too.

Have you noticed I've been keeping up to date with Castles of Burgundy

I'm much better at turns on bga too honest!

Reposting from BGA:

Posted some games for group-play:

Innovation 2 player:
https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

Viticulture (I may need to invite you) 3-5 player:
https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

6 Nimmt - ideally 6+player:

https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

All turn-based.

I'll take an invite to Viticulture! Also jumped in the Innovation game. I played it person a long time ago, will need to refresh on the rules but I've been interested in giving it another shot.

I'd love an invitation to Viticulture too! Didn't realize that one's up on BGA, now.

I'm playing a game of Beyond the Sun on BGA with friends and I quite like it, both the design and the interface. Not finished yet, though.

Same, I've just started a second game of Beyond the Sun. I think it does a great job of making a technology tree into the main aspect of a game.

Another game currently in Beta on BGA that I've recently played and enjoyed is Lost Ruins of Arnak.
This one had a great theme and combines deck-building and worker placement in a game of exploration and resource management.

I've played a few games of Beyond the Sun now on BGA and I'm really enjoying the game. All of the mechanics impact each other and the engine feels tight plus it has a healthy mix of strategy and tactics. I dig it.

Lost Ruins of Arnak I've now also played a few times on BGA and it's the opposite of Beyond the Sun for me. It has a smattering of mechanics (deck building, resource management, worker placement) but I feel like they don't really meld nicely for me and I've found the game not terribly interesting. Going in I thought this is the one I would have enjoyed more but Beyond the Sun has really impressed me so far, to the point of considering a physical copy.

Not played either yet but I'd be interested in giving Beyond the Sun and Lost Ruins of Arnak a try.

mattutor have been playing innovation with 2p teams. Once got the hang of it really enjoyed. Bit burned out on it for now, but be up for a 1v1 after a bit of a break.

My group has been playing all the new BGA games as they come up, and for me Rallyman GT is still the best game on there for a fun time.

Railroad Ink loses something magical in the computer transition and doesn't have enough interaction to make it interesting.
Potion Explosion has too much downtime.
7 Wonders is fantastic and quick once people who the rules.
Incan Gold is our cooldown game, and the BGA version is really quick and fun.
Stone Age is great
We all love 6 Nimmt. Just like Rallyman it allows you do mildly shaft your opponents
Oriflamme seemed promising - we didn't really familiar enough with it to start to understand winning strategies but it appears to have really interesting interactions
Forbidden Island is great. I think I like it more than pandemic - it seems like a faster, more concentrated and less fiddly version of the best bits of pandemic

I think Potion Explosion is best played async. Gives you time to ponder the best moves and chain reactions and you don't have to sit around and wait for others to take their turns. I've played a few real time games and it's pretty slow but turn based is fantastic.

I've put up a turn based game of Beyond the Sun for anyone interested: https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

As this post reminds me, the sheer # and variety of games at BGA is borderline-overwhelming at this point.

Since I'm already playing one game of it and I've almost figured out the iconography, I'm in!

I don't know much about it at apart from hearing it's got tech trees... But happy to give it a go and bumble through. Ta.

For Beyond the Sun, here are three useful video tutorials I used to learn the game:

Before You Play

JonGetsGames

All You Can Board

UPDATE: And we're off! Feel free to ask questions in the chat. Nothing worse than being totally stymied by the arcane iconography.

Thanks

Great game of BtS, guys, and hats off to Dreaded Gazebo for a convincing win. No idea where you picked up all those points.

Yeah gg all!

I'm slowly getting to grips with the point scoring with two games now under my belt. It's definitely one I'll play again, a fun game.

Thanks! I have no doubt you will all be soundly trouncing me soon

I've put up a new game of Beyond the Sun for anyone interested: https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

Aye, good game. Interested in investigating more and joined... I'll be looking at the rules for this one mind

Looks like you guys are full up, but I'd be interested in playing next time!

I opened up a game of Beyond the Sun as well, checking here to see if there are any takers. Anyone from the GWJ group can join. I’ve just learned the basics but haven’t played at all yet. Anxious to give it a go!

Beyond the Sun on BGA

Edit: Game's full and has begun! gl/hf!

More games of interest appear in BGA alpha:

Talon (GMT space combat game)
Agricola (!)
Space Base
King of Tokyo
Troyes Dice
New Frontiers
Castles of Burgundy (perfectly fine version already available at yucata.de ...)

I can open/invite to these if you like - let me know - not that I know how to play them necessarily!

Others of note now in BGA beta:

Pandemic
Viticulture
Many More

I'm down for Castles of Burgundy. Love the game and want to see if the implementation is better than on Yucata. Also down for King of Tokyo. I'm not familiar with New Frontiers, Troyes Dice, Space Base or Talon but I'm always willing to learn! Agricola I've always been so-so on but I'll gladly hop in a game if you need players

We are SO close to actual wargames being represented plentifully on BGA!

Big fan of Agricola! And I would love to see Caverna added at some point.

Matt, I'd love an open for Agricola, and would be happy to play a game if people are in.
