NFL 2021: Draft

Jags draft Jalen Camp. Philly blew it.

Panthers twitter is actually ... pretty happy! Carolina picked up a big WR (Terrace Marshall Jr. of LSU), a blocking TE (Tommy Tremble of Notre Dame), two big O-linemen (Brady Christensen of BYU and the gi-normous Deonte Brown of Alabama), a runner (Chuba Hubbard of Okla State) and a bunch of other guys I've never heard of.

Probably the most encouraging news of the night is that the Panthers wheeled and dealed their way into 11 picks, which is their most in years.

So no excuses, Sam Darnold.

Kyler Murray throwing to Rondale Moore will be interesting. 5-9 throwing to 5-7. Will they even be able to see each other on the field?

I imagine that if Moore is successful in the NFL, he'll be easy to see since no one will be around him. Or there will be a lot of screen passes.

He was a player I absolutely hated in college as a fan of a team that played him every year. I'd like to see him do well in the NFL now that I don't have a rooting interest but I'm not optimistic. He's scary talented but I think he's going to end up being too small.

I think him going to Arizona is good for him. He needed to go to a team that had other WRs and wasn't going to try to shoehorn him into an X or Z role.

Panthers draft a long snapper!

Reportedly the Niners avoided spending a pick at WR because they feel Jalen Hurd's recovery is on track. Sure hope they're right.

THERE WAS A PLAYER NAMED CAMARON CHEESEMAN AVAILABLE AND THE PACKERS DIDN'T TAKE HIM!?! WHO'S RUNNING THAT CLOWN STORE?

Good pickup for them. Guy knows how to get more yards. After Waldman put him as his top RB I took a bit of look at his tape and liked what I saw from Frank Gore, Jr. He's not flashy, but he gets his work done.

Packers didn't have a pick that PFF liked until the 7th round.

Yikes. Things are just fine.

Was that pic a quarterback?

I was too focused on the draft broadcast and being stupid in this thread to monitor Twitter on Day 1, but apparently 49ers owner Jed York was on quite the roll.

"what area code is 920" was gold.

Can really see Cleveland being a force to be reckoned with next year, barring another string of injuries to the secondary.

Or, you know, Baker not being very good again.

I think Ben Cleveland will be a force to be reckoned with next year.

Yeah, he's got the potential to be a good, nasty fit.

Not sure why Brandon Stephens went so early, but they're clearly adding athleticism on defense and hoping they can be taught how to play.

Oh, Jacoby, never change.

The Brandon Stephens pick has me scratching my head. CB wasn't even on my mind as a need and Stephens wasn't anywhere near my 104 spot on my board.

The best I can figure is he's a ST guy with athletic upside. Not someone is ever take that early, but perhaps their analytics tells them something.

what do the analytics tell us about the possibility of picking up a starting caliber RT as an UDFA?

Louisville RB Javian Hawkins signed by Atlanta. He only set a school record with 1500 yards in 2019...

I think they'll probably end up with Tyre Phillips starting and if not him a vet whose price will come down in time.

They're saying Stephens profiles as a free safety. Fast with the ability to pick off the ball. Still seems a reach.

I mean, hey, when you have 28 picks like the Panthers managed to get, you can take a flyer on some guys.

Plus JJ Jansen is the oldest guy on the team by four years, and he's on a one-year deal. Time to find his successor.

Baltimore visits the Lions next year...If MHA is going to call out Detroit, Cleveland must be coming soon right?

I still don't know what to make of Chuba Hubbard. If he had opted out of 2020, would he have gone in the 1st?

That’s a good question about a lot of players since COVID threw a big wrench in the process with players opting out of the year, less in person scouting etc. Training camp and practices will be a lot more important, not that they aren’t already, to shake off dust and see what these players are really about.

Yup, which might explain why I feel like the Ravens reached on a couple physical prospects. When there's not a lot of (recent) tape, go with physical ability.

I occasionally watch clips from the Rich Eisen show, just because I like the guy and it's some decent background noise when I'm doing stuff. His guest fill-in host during draft week was Ryan Leaf; I had no idea the guy was looking at broadcasting or NFL analysis in any way, and have to say he's pretty damn good. Putting the video in just because it's nice to see the guy turn his life around after all the trouble he had. Worth a watch.

Leaf has been doing well in his broadcast career, and he's been super open about his problems in the NFL as well as his drug problems and incarcerations after. He's served as an ambassador for a sober living community to help other addicts as they try and turn things around.

I would be more positive on Leaf in general, if not for his domestic battery charge a year ago. He pled out and avoided jail time, but the charge was "misdemeanor battery of a spouse, ex-spouse, fiance, dating partner or co-parent." And there hasn't been so much openness about that one.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Tom Silverstein was on ESPN Radio today, describing the Rodgers/Packers relationship as "irreconcilable".

If that's true, the next step for this process will be to wait for June 1st. Moving Rodgers after June 1st splits the $38.35m cap hit across 2021 and 2022. That would be approximately $21.2m and $17.15m, respectively, representing about a $16m and $22.65m net cap gain in those seasons from the $37.2m and $39.8m figures he currently has on the books, as well as eliminating his $28.3m hit in 2023 entirely.

If a trade does happen, I'm guessing the Denver destination that was rumored on draft day turns out to be true. Apparently that actress fiancee of his that he's so gaga about lives part time in Boulder. And Denver did pass on Justin Fields (and Fat Mac for that matter) after supposedly being on the hunt for a QB, but only ending up trading a 6th for Teddy B.

I seriously wonder what the actual package could be.

I'm in the phase of where I'm not resigned to it happening but if the Broncos are ready to throw an insane package at the Packers. I'd be very curious to know what the details are.

Teddy Bridgewater can win a SB under center with a great roster right?

I think it will be less than people expect, especially if Rodgers is willing to go through with sitting out.

The draft took 5 possible landing spots off the table, one of whom was on Rodgers' list of 3 teams he was interested in.

If the options are really just Denver and Vegas, unless the Raiders are all in, there isn't going to be a competitive market. Supposedly, the Raiders no longer think Derek Carr is the cause of their woes, and they've had preliminary extension talks with him. I don't think they're SO happy with Carr that they wouldn't explore Rodgers, but it seems they're happy enough to not be desperate.

I don't think three 1sts will be on the table. Yes for a 32-year-old Russ, and yes for a hypothetical non-rapey 25-year-old Watson. But for a 37-year-old QB that's severely limiting the market and is also starting to explore his post-football career options? I don't see it. I honestly don't know if you can project with certainty Rodgers staying in football beyond 2-3 years.

My guess is going to be two 1sts in exchange for Rodgers and a 3rd.

Sorry for the Steelers-centric draft coverage, but were there any good inductees to the East/West College Bowl?

I had to read up on a couple of our picks like Kendrick Green, who was on a bunch of G lists as G/C, but not many C lists, but I'm now looking forward to the possible successor to Cam Heyward and Tyson Alualu getting named by announcers as he makes tackles.

Camaron Cheeseman, Divine Deablo, and Stone Forsythe, maybe.

Dillon Stoner didn't get drafted but signed as a UDFA with Las Vegas.

So did Coy Cronk with Green Bay, and Tuf Borland with Minnesota.

I think Rodgers should stay and play. Please for the love of god stay and play at least next year!!

Signed, a concerned Giants fan

So where could Rodgers end up in this parallel (or maybe not) universe we're discussing?

Denver seems likely because (a) their QBs are merely OK, and (b) they seem to like end-of-career QBs (OK, one).

Maybe Vegas? Or WFT?

I'm trying to think of teams w not-set QB situations and the potential financial means to sign him. The Saints might be another, but at last check they're $5 billion (give or take) over the cap.
