[News] Coronavirus

A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

Same wackadoo private school in Miami is saying not to get the "experimental shot" and refusing to employ anyone who does.

This is based on the right wing anti-vax nonsense that has been spreading around the net claiming women in proximity to others that have gotten the vaccine are having irregular periods. I can't even call it pseudoscience it's such bullsh*t. As if people with the vaccine are emanating "something"... Insanity.

Just wow.

India is a mess and getting worse. So the near future will be much worse.

But to put these numbers into context: the US has seen 32 million confirmed COVID cases and more than 579,000 deaths. Thus, in the US:

* 1 in 10 has been infected.
* 1 in 570 has died due to COVID.

Wow.

I think at some point percentages lose relevance. 1 in 6915 may be better than 1 in 570 but India has 4x the people. It seems it won't take them long to surpass us.

1.366 billion people in India = dare I say "only" 197,541 deaths. Which may seem like it will take a while to catch us but if the under reporting is as bad as suspected, they may have passed us already.

Also, this may be anecdotal but 10% infection rate is shameful. Any sort of leadership and this had no business being as widespread as it was here in the US. It never should have reached sparsely populated regions here. Where I live is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. (second only to NY) In my little city of 76K people, we've had 2300 cases and 113 deaths. 1200 of those came over the holidays.

I 100% agree. India is in a bad place, and it is and will be a humanitarian disaster. The percentages alone hide the scale of it.

But you’ve hit on my point — the US has been a shameful disaster. I don’t always think people in the US are aware of just how bad COVID has been. Certainly the people complaining about having to wear masks have ignored the real implications.

It will be "interesting" (in a bad way) to see how this trickles down to the world - not even the disease but the amount of things made in India that will be in short supply. Heck they are one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical manufacturers. This could disrupt a lot of medications people just expect will be availabe.

Just when you thought insulin couldn't get more expensive.

New excess death research was published earlier this month said there were 522K excess deaths last year, that was up 23% from previous years. 72% of those deaths could be attributed to COVID. The other 28% was likely also COVID, but listed as something else on the death certificate.

So rather than only having a shameful 600,000+ deaths once this is all said and done, it'll really be well over a million deaths. In fact the actual deaths here will be about half of the initial Imperial College of London report that shocked the sh*t out of everyone early last year and about 11 times the deaths Trump predicted.

I misread this at first. I thought you were saying that 100% of all deaths last year was COVID, but realized that you are referring to the excess deaths. It might actually be worse given that there are a lot of death categories that would have gone down last year. Though I was surprised that car related fatalities were up 8% last year despite less drivers being on the road (maybe more traffic meant people drive slower overall).

Wouldn't the excess deaths be part of that 600,000 number, not adding to it?

How Pfizer makes the Covid vaccine

This kind of stuff always amazes and fascinates me. Your mileage may vary.

RE excess deaths, there were also an exceptionally large number of pneumonia deaths last year. A bunch of those were likely covid deaths that were not tested.

I will not be surprised if we exceed 1 billion infections.

Right. So I looked at last years COVID deaths, which came out to be 375k. And the excess deaths were 522k, so it is fair to say that COVID deaths were probably closer to 522k then 375k. What I am confused on is OG_Slinger said that we might be well over a million deaths when all is said and done, was he adding 522k to the current 573k number, or he just projecting based on how much we are under reporting actual COVID related deaths.

I screwed up my initial read of the numbers, so you're right.

The official US COVID death count, though, will be the 600K+ number *plus* whatever portion of the unattributed 28% of excess deaths from 2020 (and whatever portion of 2021 excess deaths) are eventually attributed to COVID.

Yeah, that's where I screwed up.

My understanding is that the under-reporting of COVID deaths that happened will eventually be accounted for once doctors and scientists have the time to audit medical records and death certificates. But we won't see the results from that for years. And even then it'll be a probabilistic range.

Dr. Anthony Fauci Dismantles Joe Rogan’s False And Selfish Vaccination Advice

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday picked apart wildly popular podcast host Joe Rogan’s bogus claim that young, healthy people don’t need to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

“That’s incorrect,” Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert, told “Today” host Savannah Guthrie.

“The reason why is you’re talking about yourself in a vacuum then,” Fauci explained. “You’re worried about yourself getting infected and the likelihood that you’re not going to get any symptoms. But you can get infected, and will get infected if you put yourself at risk.”

Healthy people can be infected with COVID-19 without showing symptoms, Fauci said, and they can “inadvertently and innocently then infect someone else who might infect someone who really could have a problem with a severe outcome.”

“So, if you want to only worry about yourself and not society, then that’s OK,” he said of the no-vaccination stance. “But if you’re saying to yourself, even if I get infected, I could do damage to somebody else even if I have no symptoRogan does not appear to have addressed the controversy surrounding his comments, which he made on an episode of his “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast released on Spotify Friday.

On the show, Rogan said “for the most part it’s safe to get vaccinated” against the coronavirus. But he added: “If you’re like 21 years old and you say to me, ‘Should I get vaccinated?’ I’ll go, ‘No.’ If you’re a healthy person and you’re exercising all the time and you’re young and you’re eating well, I don’t think you need to worry about this.”

Rogan signed a $100 million deal to move his show to Spotify last year. This month it emerged that the streaming giant had quietly removed 42 episodes, including controversial content.ms at all, and that’s the reason why you’ve got to be careful and get vaccinated.”

Fauci left no doubt when Guthrie specifically asked if young, healthy people should receive the shot.

“Absolutely,” he responded.

Some 80% of Americans need to be vaccinated to reach the level of herd immunity required to ward off newer, more contagious strains of the virus, Fauci said previously. About 30% of the population is now fully vaccinated.

And it's not as if death is the only bad outcome a healthy 21-year-old needs to be thinking about.

In February, after missing his entire senior season, Foster announced on Instagram that he was leaving football “with sadness but no regrets.” Despite being eligible to come back in 2021 as a fifth-year senior, he couldn’t sense a full recovery was near.

“It’s been my life,” Foster said of football. “It was a tough decision, but at the end of the day I had to do what was best for my health.”

...

Durr, who was selected second overall by the New York Liberty in 2019, has been especially frustrated by the false starts toward recovery followed by setbacks. She’ll have a day or days when she’ll start feeling good, believing she’s about to turn a corner, only to be greeted by discomfort instead. Routine activities remain a hassle at times. A sneaker head, Durr has had difficulty organizing her shoes or hanging curtains in her bedroom without having to gather herself.

“Some days it feels like you have covid again,” she said. “It’s kind of like a tease: ‘Oh, you’re starting to feel better.’ Then it hits you again. And you’re down, super sick, in the bed. People always ask me, ‘Which one is worse: having covid or dealing with the post covid?’ And I’m like, ‘Man, I can’t pick one,’ because some days, it feels about the same. That’s how brutal it gets.”

It's not as if we didn't already know Rogan was an irresponsible, loathsome jackass. Still a damn shame how much influence he has via his media presence.

He responded to Fauci's comments and pretty much said that about himself.

Is he going to lead the rest of his podcasts with a disclaimer saying he's a goddamned moron that no one should take medical (or any) advice from and tell his listeners that they all should immediately get vaccinated even if they are young and healthy?

Wouldn't telling his listeners to immediately get vaccinated be giving medical advice that you just said he shouldn't give.

Agreed. It's actually worse that he's aware he's a dangerous and vile influence and just doesn't give a f*ck because it profits him.

What is really surprising to me is just how far his reach/influence goes. My boss, who is originally from Romania and is now based in Germany, will bring up Joe Rogan and his podcast regularly. And he's usually using him as an example of someone who "gets it". So he has fans all over the world listening to his sh*t.

"Why would anyone listen to ME? I'm just a guy!"

He knows his influence. f*ck him, his ego, his money and all his takes.

My wife is an endocrinology NP with more than 30 years of experience in nursing. She has a PhD and has never gotten a work evaluation that wasn't exemplary.

I have noticed her coming home from work earlier than usual lately and asked her why. She said "white people don't want an Asian nurse to see them".

f*cking gutter trash.

We have very... assertive... PAs and MDs at work and it still nevers fails to amaze me when some dipsh*t WASP dude tries to, "Well, actually..." them.

EDIT:

Though I should say our RNs and techs regularly get harassed the most.

People are vile.

My brain has so much trouble processing the thoughts of the people saying that.

It's both simpler than you think and often also not worth the effort.

Watch half an hour of Fox Nuisance and it will all make sense.

I get that in the medical field there are very strict ethics, can't just let someone suffer/die, duty to act, etc.

But that hospital could do worse than telling those patients, "Ok. Nurse Paleocon is the nurse assigned to you and is completely qualified to take care of your needs. You don't get to pick/choose who is in your room, and certainly not based on your personal beliefs about race/religion/sex or any other protected status. Keep it up and you can go down the street."
