NFL 2021: Draft

According to Shefter, Rodgers wants out.

Reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers is so disgruntled with the Green Bay Packers that he has told some within the organization that he does not want to return to the team, league and team sources told ESPN on Thursday.

ESPN Article.

The Packers are aware of his feelings, concerned about them and have had team president Mark Murphy, general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur each fly out on separate trips to meet with Rodgers at various points this offseason, sources told ESPN.

Gulp.

Is it wrong that I'm most stoked about Rodgers going to SF because of the impact on this thread after it happens?

Am excite!

Jeopardy is reportedly offering Ken Jennings and LeVar Burton for Rodgers.

Well. This certainly complicates things.

Green Bay has seriously mismanaged the Rodgers relationship for years now. It's no surprise it's coming to a head.

Sounds to me like somebody *coughcoughcoughAaronRodgers* is aware that it's the biggest NFL news day of the year and leaked a little info in order to exert a little public pressure to improve those new contract numbers. The timing of the news is . . . a mite convenient for that?

I wonder if there's an actual package out there where the Packers actually just say f*ck it and trade him.

No player is untouchable.

Let's open up some discussion.

If you're San Francisco, that #3 pick you hold is basically your three 1st round picks for these next 3 drafts.

Do you trade the capital from 3 1st round picks for a 37-year-old Aaron Rodgers?

Do you ask for Rodgers plus pick #29?

Or maybe Rodgers is preemptively mad at Green Bay's upcoming QB pick in this year's draft instead of reactively mad like he was a year ago?

Best to get ahead of things, amirite?

Tonight is going to be bonkers. I predict four Laremy Tunsils on a five-gasmask scale.

I feel like if that's the offer the Packers rather just give him whatever contract he wants.

If you undo that Miami/49ers pick and you are talking about 3 first rounds (one being a swap) for Rodgers ? Then that's another story.

#3 and Rodgers for #29? I think the 49ers can't take that deal fast enough, presuming the cap works. Aaron Rodgers on that roster means the 49ers are instant Super Bowl contenders. Rodgers gets a better team, goes back to California, and, all importantly to him, he gets to utterly screw over the Packers in a moment, and gives them their "you wanted Jordan Love, you got Jordan Love" moment.

That being said, if Rodgers really wanted out and this wasn't about just popping up in the news cycle on the afternoon of the draft, it'd have come out sooner. This feels very calculated.

I'm just here for the chaos.

The irony of Mac Jones potentially joining the OH NO NOT AGAIN group is that he's the polar opposite of Gabbert and Bortles.

Both of those guys were tall, big bodied, big arm, big-guy-mobile types, whose transition to an NFL offense was the question mark. They were 100% traits guys.

Mac Jones is 0% traits. Shorter, poor physique, average arm, no mobility. His prospect appeal is entirely how his game translates to an NFL offense.

I'd still rather have Jones than Wilson, myself. Wilson reminds me too much of every QB prospect who had the arm, but doesn't understand how to play QB well enough.

Maybe the Packers want to light another fire under his ass?

I've been thinking about this, and I have an ideal scenario; five minutes before the first pick of the draft is announced, Aaron Rodgers gets online with some sports media personality not affiliated with NFLN or ESPN, like Pat McAfee. He just, out of the blue, announces his retirement from the NFL, thanks the fans of Green Bay, and turns off his camera. That's it, nothing else, just the biggest mic drop in NFL history, and the rest of the draft is all the NFL and ESPN analysts freaking the hell out and trying to explain what just happened. Aaron Rodgers turns off his phone and ignores every attempt to contact him, and nobody knows what is happening.

That would be SPECTACULAR, and the biggest middle finger in sports history.

I'd be fine with this. He's not getting the Jeopardy job though.

I feel like I might have gotten here too if we had seen Mac Jones start a second year and polish up his game a little more. Zach Wilson had 3 years of starting. Mac might have been an uber-polished prospect with that amount of game experience. It's just so hard to evaluate Mac when you're watching games full of wide open receiver throws and screen passes.

And the 49ers get to correct the mistake of not drafting him to start with. Better late than never

Nope. He's at best 3rd or 4th of the guest hosts so far, and there's some potential great ones scheduled.

Baker, OBJ, and a second!?

Could be. But it also could have been triggered by the fact that there is now a hard offer on the table from the 49ers, which as you point out, is not only his hometown team but also an immediate Super Bowl contender with him under center. It's one thing to demand a trade in the abstract, it's another when an offer to get traded into a situation like that is being made.

EDIT: Aaron Rodgers wanted Packers to accept 49ers’ trade offer.

Yep. I think that was the catalyst for all this.

Sure we will send Jordan Love right over.

Feel free to keep Baker tho.

An Aaron Rodgers mic drop would be eight Tunsils out of five. Maybe nine.

Absolutely.

Edit: And speaking of chaos, SI's Albert Breer reports that Denver (Teddy B's new team) might be shopping Drew Lock, especially if they draft a QB. Prospective teams are Minnesota (who needs a backup) and ...

... Carolina.

draft derp

"How hard would it be to just give him one receiver", lol.

Honestly it blows my mind at the failure of the Packers to draft a receiver in the two amazing WR draft classes we just had.

10 rookie WRs last year had more catches than Valdes-Scantling. Only 4 of those were 1st rounders.

The #20 pick . . . *chef's kiss*.

Someone from the Jags Reddit: "So this is how we end up with the tight end out of Florida on draft day."

If Carolina was interested in Lock though, why not have him be part of the Teddy trade?

That would make sense and Carolina is quickly trying to dethrone Washington and Cleveland as dysfunctional franchise.

Packers might be coming around the outside though to show everyone how it's done.

Who knew things would actually get worse in Carolina after forcing Geezer McGrabby to sell the franchise?
