2020/21 Soccer Thread: Messxit?

I hadn't realized that the decision whether to draw the VAR offside line or not was discretionary rather than something just done all the time.

Arsenal win this game with a different VAR. And that's the problem with the current offside process, that many don't realise.

There's a key subjective element that means a different VAR doesn't draw the lines on the penalty (or on Everton's goal) because it's too close.

What an abomination.

I mean, I know it's over for now, but genuinely, based on form over the last few years, Leicester have as much if not more of a claim to join a Super League than Arsenal do.

My guy. My guy. C'mon dude.

Re: Revenue sharing: I'm fine with that, although it's clearly very complicated in a huge league with Pro/Rel.

However, even if you did some really smart math, I doubt you'd ever get clubs to agree to it - in which case, you can still consider salary caps.

Oh I think there was opposition to these ideas in Spain and Italy, it just wasn't as vocal or well organized as the English fan's reaction was. Sid Lowe and Nicky Baldini cover it quite well in today's Guardian Football podcast.

From what Sid's been talking about on the Bird App, apparently it is beginning to calcify into a backlash against the backlash in Spain/Italy, due in no small part to UEFA/FIFA's obvious status as poor protagonists.

VAR. Again. Just terrible.

The issue is that the rules of the game are written for nuance and discernment. With the current application of VAR there is NO room for that.

That's a paddlin'

Depressing set of result today for the bottom 3. I think relegation is settled now, and it looks to me like 4th is Chelsea's to mess up.

Somewhat anti-climatic end to the season.

You never know! We might beat Chel...........

....well at least I might not only be able to travel internationally again by the fall, but tickets at Craven Cottage will be a sight cheaper.

SIDENOTE: I was literally at the "checking hotel listings and flights" stage of scheduling a weeklong trip to England to see Fulham play twice and visit a few other cities in January of last year and then........ COVID. Bleurgh.

At least someone called Kane scored in the cup yesterday.

(The Keeper headed it, but it was tapped in at the post by Chris Kane.)

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimes Manchester United Steamrolled Leeds, in a move that maybe makes me think he was just watching a rerun of the 6-2 win, not the 0-0 sorefest that was served up between the teams yesterday.

Matters what he means by "steamrollered."

I had the flu once and took three Tylenol PM, and that absolutely "steamrollered" me into unconsciousness for 14 hours.

Well! Two good results for England, then.

I can still see Chelsea losing. I'd be mildly surprised if City gak this one up now.

Also, I don't see Arsenal getting sold. Kronke's not letting that sh*t go.

Also, hey! Jesse Marsch is the new manager at RB Leipzig!

Pretty safe saying that this is the highest-profile assignment an American has ever had in football, eh?

Not Bradley at Swansea then?

Maybe if the fans actually didn't show up to the matches post covid but we all know that's not going to happen.

My memory is spotty from the Glazers take over as it happened so long ago already but fan boycotts of matches was womp womp effective.

In other somewhat related news to football finance. Barca are 1.2b euro in debt? Let it all burn down.

Francois Coquelin coming on for Villarreal at the start of the 2nd half to defend a 2-0 for Unai Emery.

This might be peak trolling of Arsenal and I'm laughing (while crying).

Sorry, Pred.

As so often this season Fulham were game opposition, particularly during a first half that they shaded, only to emerge with nothing. Once again, their achilles heel was their lack of cutting edge.

Yeah, sorry Pred. Really thought you guys were going to reel Newcastle in.

In happier news.

It’s all kicked off a bit in the Premier League where a group of about 200 Manchester United fans have stormed the pitch at Old Trafford prior to the United v Liverpool game. Some damage to the pitch and stadium by all accounts. They are protesting the ownership by the Glazers.

Even I sympathise with United fans on that front but not sure storming the ground is really the right answer. Kick off extensively delayed, if the game happens at all.

There goes the Man U - Liverpool game. Officially postponed now.

"Broadcast Partners" are going to be delighted.

So far BBC coverage has been wall to wall United fans either defending the actions or condoning those that stormed the pitches.

I know I’m bias but another team has been badly impacted here.

I'm especially glad for Lukaku, his first title since his debut at Anderlecht 10 years ago.

My carefully considered position on which is; that team also joined the ESL, so f*ck them too.

I just can't believe it got to happen. Like, that represents a monumental failure of security for ManU. They should've known this protest was coming for weeks now. If they couldn't handle this, they should be absolutely thrilled that stadiums aren't letting fans back yet, or it'd have been a total disaster.

Roma hired Mourinho.
