Recommend me a (non-gaming) podcast

Interesting thanks. I had never heard the expression.

Thanks for the recommendation Eleima & zeroKFE. I was up way too late last night playing Europa Universe 4and listening to an episode and yeah, it's pretty great and yeah, give me all the in-universe Star Wars politics.

Imaginary Worlds is a fortnightly podcast about science fiction and fantasy by former NPR journalist Eric Molinsky. Episodes are only 30-ish minutes but are dense with interviews, insights and fascinating facts into whatever the topic is. The most recent episode is about Second Life and the hardcore of people who still inhabit it.

I also listen to Scriptnotes, hosted by screenwriters John August (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie, among others) and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl and the upcoming Borderlands and Last of Us adaptations). I gave up my own screenwriting aspirations years ago (I kid myself that I'll get back to it), but still love listening to these two talk about the nuts and bolts of writing and the vagaries of the movie and TV industry.

I Saw That Years Ago - Join us as we ride out with Old West historian (and Arizona Ghostrider) Santee to the cowboy town of .... SILVERADO

We have another special guest for you today. Santee is an Old West historian and a member of the Arizona Ghostriders, which is the name of his performance troupe and his YouTube channel.

Santee makes all sorts of videos on day-to-day life in the old west, from cowboys to corsets. If you've ever wondered what it was like to live back then, he's the man who could tell you.

I asked him if he'd pick a western to re-visit and he chose Silverado, starring Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover and Kevin Costner. We chatted about the film as a film, as a reflection of life in the West and all sorts of other things.

Santee recorded the show at 5AM his time in the hope he could be helfpul to us. So, please share this with as many people as possible.

Just a quick shout out, because I don't think I've seen it mentioned here before --

I've been enjoying The Dungeon Run, which is a cast of actors doing tabletop 5e D&D, DMed by Jeff Cannata. They have a few homebrew twists and there's a crowd participation element, but it all gets explained as you go.

I am in awe of Jeff Cannata's skills as a DM. He does a super job with the world he created, the story and NPCs (so many voices!) There's some great encounters and also cool character work by the cast. He does a recap before each show if you don't want to start from the start, but there's some really good stuff in the early episodes -- it started strong and got better imho.

You can listen to it as a podcast, but it's also livestreamed on Twitch and released as a Youtube video, which is worth it for the visuals. The production crew created some amazing tabletop sets before COVID and now they do it digitally, which is cool in a different way.

Anyhoo, I've been enjoying it so much, it bumped a few other D&D podcasts off my rotation.

The first two podcasts my brand new daughter heard on the way home were Rational Security and Pod Save America. She'll be fine.

What does everyone here use for podcasts? Apple went and jacked up their built in podcast app with iOS 14.5.

Still using Pocketcasts here. It has great list support and I was grandfathered into the Premium plan with which I use the web app all the time.

Edit: What changed with the Apple Podcast app? I just peeked at it and didn’t notice any difference from the last time I tried it out.

- They now order the "Library" by when you "followed" a podcast instead of which podcasts have the latest episodes. I relied on this tab as the first place I'd go. So that alone has ruined my use of the app.

- Because of this change, I can no longer easily find episodes of podcasts that I don't follow, but where I've downloaded an episode. So now I need to follow podcasts I only intended to download 1 or 2 episodes from.

- If you're looking at the currently playing card of a podcast episode you can no longer see the description. I used to use this personally to find the timecodes of certain subjects and fast forward. Now I have to go to a completely different part of the UI, dig and find the episode and look at it that way.

- We now see recommended podcasts and episodes mixed in with the "Listen Now" view. I know that's for discoverability, but there were already ways to discover podcasts. "Listen Now" used to be about viewing podcasts that you'd downloaded.

I have been using Downcast for years, but I think Overcast is a favorite around here.

Downcast was my first love, but it started to take forever to refresh feeds as I subbed to more and more podcasts. It’s been years though and I never thought to try it again.

Overcast is my favorite. I had been using Instacast since the late 00’s but they pulled support for it and removed it from the app store several years ago and Overcast was the best replacement that I tried out at the time. It’s got a lot of nice features and I was able to seamlessly import my subscriptions.
This ad has been brought to you by Overcast (tm).

Pocketcasts for me.

Overcast also seems pretty good, but the playlist paradigm in Pocketcasts matches my usage and way of thinking about playlists a bit better (also, I got grandfathered into the premium as well). Not sure if Overcast has a web player, but I do appreciate that about Pocketcasts since it lets me hand off from my mobile device to my PC or Mac relatively seamlessly.

I'd suggest trying both, and going with whichever feels better.

QFT. I think Downcast is what I used to use, but I switched to Overcast a few years ago. I like its playback speed and boost settings, and that it has a web-app version I can use on my PC.

My podcast recommendation of late is the recent (-ish) series on Tides of History- it's on prehistoric humans from early hominids to early agriculture (so far). Really well researched and presented.

Same, love PocketCasts.

PocketCasts for me.

Overcast for me. Tried using PocketCasts for a while but I preferred the interface of Overcast and switched back.

I still use the Apple podcast app. In its current iteration I tap “library” at the bottom and then “episodes” at the top. This shows me the newest episodes from my subscriptions with the most recent at the top. I subscribe to a lot of news podcasts that sometimes cover the same stories so I start at the top and delete the ones I’m not interested in, listen to the ones I am.

I Saw That Years Ago - This week we're joined by two theatre buffs to see Robin Williams in.... MRS DOUBTFIRE

This week we're joined Caleb and Jake from the Maybe You Like It podcast.

Cake - their new name - host a show where they imagine how they'd stage films as plays. It's a bit theatre, a bit Taskmaster, a bit Dungeons and Dragons.

Our podcast is full of lots of dumb jokes, but also a serious discussion about Williams' role and how society has changed since the film was released.

Apparently a 300th show might be considered a milestone amongst podcasters. Whatever its importance, this is show is the first time I watched Citizen Kane. I'd heard all the jokes and even knew what Rosebud was, but I'd never actually seen the film.

Found a great podcast called UnderUnderstood. It’s very similar to Reply All. I’ve only just started season 1 and it’s pretty good so far. I don’t know what the frack is going on with Reply All right now, so this has been a nice replacement for the time being.

There’s also a new season out of Cautionary Tales which I’ve recommended before. One of my faves.

Oh yeah! Cautionary Tales is excellent!

Thanks for the recommendation for Under Understood.

It really sucks that Reply All has imploded, but it’s not too surprising. Still disappointing though. At some point PJ started to lean heavily into the supposed “alpha male” role and constantly try to “pwn” Alex. That was my first clue that something was changing for the worse. I really didn’t like that style of interaction between the two hosts. For one thing, I identify as a “nerd”, so when PJ started acting like Alex was his nerdy Female Doggo it was pretty off putting. Besides which, PJ is himself a total nerd, so it just didn’t track with me.

Then I come to find out that there was heavy anti-union sh*t coming from PJ and Shruthy? WTF!!! That’s the last thing I ever expected from a show like Reply All. I always thought that standing up for the under-represented was a major aspect of the show. I’m super disappointed in learning about the far-right leanings of PJ and Shruthy. It’s so weird. So unexpected. It’s really tainted my view of Gimlet Media on the whole.

Now I’m thinking about the weird back and forth between the host of Heavyweight and his supposed “friend” Jorge Jost. It’s much like the weird Alex and PJ thing. How much of this is just comedy relief and how much is actual bigotry? I think that Gimlet can do way better than this.

Oh and also the “Spotify exclusive” thing? I hope Spotify is paying them enough to make up for all of the listeners that they’ll be losing. That’s a lot of lost ad revenue. I personally don’t love Spotify and I’m certainly not going to be convinced to become a Spotify customer just to listen to these Gimlet shows. There’s a lot of great podcasts out there these days that are still available on every platform.

For comedy and culture I love the Maximum Fun network. They host all the McElroy brother stuff, and Judge John Hodgman (yes, that John Hodgman plays a fake internet judge). They have "Oh no, Ross and Carrie" where the titular hosts try out weird fringe pseudoscience things and join cults to tell you about them.

But my favorite is the super weird comedy/interview/shoot the sh*t show, "Jordan, Jesse, Go." It is a very specific and goofy kind of improv humor and I love it to death.

There are lots of other great shows about all kinds of stuff. If you like breakdowns of popular culture, there is definitely something here for you.

I Saw That Years Ago - This week we're joined by Matt Savage, a concept artist for Star Wars, The Martian, Prometheus, Edge of Tomorrow, Halo and more! (We're watching SNEAKERS.)

We've got a fantastic show for you today. Matt was a pleasure to speak to and gave us an insight into what it's like to be a concept artist working on some of the most famous franchises in the world.

Please share this with as many people as possible. We get great guests, but we don't have many listeners.
