General VR Catch-All

Agree Death unchained is incredibly fun, glad you found it.

So I saw Airlink is out. Has anyone tried it?

I also like In Death: Unchained quite a bit. I need to play more, especially now that I realized if I pull the cars out of the garage I have a nice big area to move around. I really wish these headsets would work outdoors. I'd love to play out in my yard. I have a wide open section of my yard that is probably 100ft by 30 ft, at least. That would be awesome.

I get too frazzled in combat to remember how to use the teleport shard so I rely more on moving my body. I wish I could make better use of it.

My VR space barely meets the min spec for "room scale", so I've had to rely on it more.

So I'm about to move house, and I'm considering options for my future VR space.

I'm wondering about the possibility of having my VR space separate from my office space (e.g. in the garage). With a wired headset, is that possible? Like can I run long-ass cables halfway across the house to connect the PC to the Vive link box that's in another room?

On the ceiling man, if you have to be wired.

Wait on reviews for Quest 2's Air Linking. If its good you can be anywhere in your house. Since you'll have the opportunity to build up your home network from the ground up you can probably get ideal conditions for it. The feature was just launched yesterday. I'll be trying it out a bit, but I have low expectations, my home network situation is not great.

Edit: This is an interesting first impression from a 'competitive' beat saber player https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest...

That's cool and all, but I'm wondering about how to do it with a Vive Pro. Not really in the market for a new headset (and Oculus is out of the question anyway cos F***book).

Ohh, I do love VD but that's a promising review.

Air play only on quest 2 or is that feature on the first quest ? I returned two quest 2s after they both had fan issues. Bought a quest one. Some pros (blacks). I’ll dip back in when a quest 3 or whatever comes out.

I picked up a few games during the recent flash sale—by the way why is the store so stingy with having regular sales?—:

Death Unchained (concur it’s awesome)
Until You Fall (awesome)
Creed (much better than reviews suggest)
Thrill of The Fight ( great workout and so different than Crees)
I Expect you To Die (worth the opening credits alone)
Real VR fishing. Good. That’s the only one I’m thinking about returning. The game seems to have trouble tracking my hand when I’m reeling in the fish. Maybe it’s the quest one hardware?

I spend far more than I hoped to but the slow drip of daily deals and titles offered made me needy.

Remember when we had OoCT? Good times!

Quest 2s have fans?

I'm so sorry I;m not following.

I considered warranty service but the process was onerous for a brand new quest 2. Ordered a replacement and the sound was noticeable even with headphones. Perhaps bad luck on my end.

Eh. It was a thing back in the long ago.

So, I've loved Dirt Rally 2.0 ever since it launched, but it ran like a dog in VR, so I played it pancake. Until recently, when I stumbled across a Reddit thread about its crappy SteamVR implementation, and the solution is to run it in Oculus mode, and now it runs great!

And holy hell am I instantly waaaay better in VR. I had the same experience in track racing games - putting yourself in the actual car means you have orders of magnitude better feel for how the car is responding.

Where I was finished 10th out of 20-something on the monitor, I put the headset on, and BOOM, first place in every. single. stage. Every single hairpin, I'm drifting gracefully around it with my ass hanging way out.

It's goddamn brilliant!

Iiiinteresting. That was one of the first games I tried and it was so bad I just never opened it again.

Add this launch option in Steam (right click on the game in your library, Properties)

-vrmode Oculus

Wait, you have a Vive Pro but you’re running it in Oculus mode? How would that even work? Oculus mode for me, with a Rift S or Rift, launches Oculus SDK.

Honest answer, I don't know.

Made-up assumption-based answer - different software routines handle the tracking, and Codies borked up the SteamVR implmentation, but did a good job on the Oculus one. I assume that because there's a launch option I can use to make Steam use the Oculus mode that Codies must have built that into the game?

I will note that when I run it in Oculus mode, I get the Oculus intro screen that talks about different comfort levels. I don't get that when I run it in SteamVR.

So the short documentary Colette from Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond just won an Oscar.

That seems to contain all of the trailers from it.

The only news I really care about is Lone Echo 2 finally getting a release... window. This summer.

After the Fall looks awesome!

Edit: And I just watched the RE4 one with sound. Quest 2 Exclusive. That is the fastest way to bail on early adopters I think I have seen in the industry.

Another thank you to Veloxi for the WidmoVR recommendation! My prescription lenses came in yesterday, and it's amazing how much of a difference it makes. I can actually read all the tiny text in Elite Dangerous easily now instead of squinting and straining my neck to get closer.

Of course now the screen door effect is also more visible (Oculus CV1 here), so there may be a VR headset upgrade in my future...

I'm not sure you can fully avoid the screen door effect, but I only notice it when the bright Oculus logo is shown during power up. I do love my lenses, just gotta get better at popping them on. There's a definite trick to it that I've not figured out yet. I don't use them all the time either, like when I'm working out in Supernatural I definitely take them out.

Veloxi wrote:

That's because you have a Quest 2. A CV1 is a whole different story. Much bigger spacing between the pixels.

SDE is still very visible in my Vive Pro, despite the claims made. I know more recent headsets advertise less SDE, but I'm guessing we'll be waiting for the next generation of headsets to get it to the point where it's really not noticeable.

For me, there's a massive step down in crispness and fine detail going from my nice 1440p monitor to the Vive Pro. Especially notice it in sim racing - the clean lines on the monitor are blurry and indistinct in the helmet.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I race almost entirely in VR, the immersion and presence drops significant time off my laps, but there is a trade-off.

The VR googles just allows you to see the prison bars that are always there. They don't go away just because you can not see them. All of you are trapped. There is no escape. There is no escape. There is no escape. There is no escape. Just hide the bars, so we can pretend we are free.

I'm not sure you can fully avoid the screen door effect, but I only notice it when the bright Oculus logo is shown during power up.

That's because you have a Quest 2. A CV1 is a whole different story. Much bigger spacing between the pixels.

Ah, my apologies then. Glad the lenses are working out for you at least.

SDE is still very visible in my Vive Pro, despite the claims made.

It's not gone entirely from the Reverb G2 either, as much as reviews have tried to claim that the lines are "invisible". If you focus on them against a solid color background, you can make them out. But another generation of improvements over the G2 probably will push them into the "undetectable by human eye" territory.

Yup, I eagerly scour reviews of every new high end headset, hoping for a clear upgrade path from the Pro. So far, so marginal gains.

Honestly, the thing I'm most excited about in a new headset is FOV. The Pro feels like looking down a very expensive middle of a toilet roll.
