Darkest Dungeon Catch All

Pages

Hah! The crow showed up again in week 41. Took down his nest this time at least, for lots of jewels. And no one ended up on Death's Door. Slowly getting stronger. I sent the same Vestal in who got one of Corvid's quirks last time, and she got another one. Very interesting.

In week 42, From Beyond town event! I was able to resurrect the Houndmaster I lost on that bad beat on the Necromancer Lord misison! The other 2 choices were both level 0s. One I lost in week 4, and one I lost purposefully to the Darkest Dungeon.

Yes a few weeks ago in the game, I sent 4 level 0s into Darkest Dungeon to get a feel for it, and 2 achievements. Ended up getting a 3rd when the brand new Hellion I had survived 5 Death's Door attacks for that achievement. Hahaha. The 0s actually survived 2 hallway fights and 1 room fight. Then I tried camping and 3 of them had heart attacks and died. It was hilarious. 4th went down at the very start of the next battle.

I've got eight 6s, three 5s, and two 4s. Might be enough bodies to start trying for real soon, at least the first one. I've got the guild and blacksmith both up to rank 4 skills, armor, and weapons. I'm only upgrading heroes a few at a time as I send them out. Feels like I'm getting close. Going to take down that rank 5 Necromancer for revenge before I do Darkest again I think. Yeah he didn't even kill my Houndmaster, but his minions did, and now he's back for revenge, mwhaha.

This game.

Totally rage quit yesterday in week 56. Had the Warrens maxed out and was going in for Flesh boss, level 5. Hellion, Houndmaster, Jester, Vestal. Going heavy bleed party and one healer. Went into a room and scouted. Went into the 2nd room and first fight of the area. Crit on my level 6 Hellion who I've had forever and mostly maxed out. Death's door. One other turn I could have ran away with my houndmaster but I couldn't heal the Hellion. Then she gets hit again before my Vestal's turn, and boom, gone. Just like that, after dozens of missions to get her from 1-to-6. Dies on a trash non-boss, non darkest fight.

Came back today, and finished that fight. The other 3 were in good shape, so I figured what the hell. i'd run at the first sign of trouble. But I found a pretty clear path to boss, with only 1 hallway fight and 1 room fight. Camped and buffed. Took a shot.

Got some bleeds going early. Stacked them. Stupid flesh kept healing itself. But bleed was winning the battle. Jester got knocked on death's door. But the rest of the turns were healing for the boss, so I didn't run, and kept at it. Vestal got at death's door once. I probably should have bailed. But boss was down to 20-ish health and taking 10/14 bleed on the middle two spots thanks to Jester. Got lucky and survived a hit. Boss went down a couple turns later. Whew.

Ruins and Warren are all clear. Weald is up to rank 4? I think. Just took out the level 3 Hag. Still haven't fought Cove boss. Got blacksmith maxed out the other day, and guild tonight. At least with ranks of upgrades, not discounts.

Still got all that core group from previous post at 6, save the Hellion. Need to max out their skills, which could take some gold. May try darkest this weekend for real.

Oh and I did take down that Necromancer Lord after my last post. But I nearly lost a couple of 6s. Final shot:

Yes that's 2 hero's at death's door. But we lived and he didn't. Whew.

Nice work Stele. I believe that's literally how the game is intended to go according to the creators.

Darkest 1 down. A breeze. I do tend to look at boss fight recommendations (bleed, blight, stund etc.) so as not to waste my time. Heavy bleed party with Hellion and Jester made short work of it. Probably should have taken hound too. But no one hit death's door at all. May have wasted my Vestal on that one honestly.

Apparently darkest 2 is a lot harder. Should try later today.

Can't decide if I'm going to risk the severe penalty for reusing characters on radiant or play as intended and use all new for each different one.

Darkest 2 is hell.

First, I hate the game interface. I go to embark, manage my inventory and get ready for a mission. Then I realize I want to level up at guild or blacksmith only the characters I'm taking for that fight, to save money. So I have to go back to hamlet and do that. At least the 4 heroes I've chosen stay marked so I can find them easily in the list. Great, now embark.

What?! The game defaults me to a different mission than I had selected. I go to provision and don't notice. I'm suddenly not in darkest 2 but in some random stupid mission I didn't want. Great. Waste my time.

Back to Hamlet and oh great Vvulf invasion. Have to fight him or he destroys stuff. Another week wasted.

Fun fight though, got a great trinket from him. Just not what I wanted to do at the time.

Ok back to darkest 2. And 2 guides I had been looking at both mention using guard because you have 3 items and one teammate is uncovered. Neither of them recommend Vestal or Occultist though. I'm thinking I probably need heals but maybe the guard thing is enough. Big mistake. I struggled through the whole mission. Got 2 of the 3 bosses barely but then it got ugly. Not enough food to heal between. And then I lose my houndmaster that I was using to guard on a random fight. Try to push on with 3 but 2 end up on deaths door the next fight so I run. And yeah it randomly kills someone to let me escape. What a disaster, losing 2 level 6s.

The only good thing is somehow I have 4 trinkets. I look it up and apparently there's a bug you can force if you abandon quest with less than 4 heroes. Lucky me, now I don't have to take houndmaster. My man at arms is still level 2 so grinding him isn't worth it to me.

But after upgrading everyone and failing a mission I'm broke. From 60k to nothing in 2 game weeks. So I've got to run a few other missions to build gold and whatever.

So that was a few days ago when I played. Worked on money and leveling some 4s and 5s the last couple days. Tonight finally ready for darkest 2 again. Checked some different guides for provisions and they both said take a Vestal because maybe the hardest mission. Duh. Still feeling stupid from the other day. But at least I don't have to do the guard thing since I have 4 trinkets.

Set up team, equip everything. Darkest 2 definitely selected. Oh wait level up bounty hunter skills. Wait don't f*ck up again, select darkest 2. Whew. Oh crap I don't have good camping skills for destressing on a couple of heroes. Just in case, let me go back to Hamlet. Ok, provisioning... Starting mission...noooooooo I did it again. Stupid random mission and not darkest 2!

f*ck f*ck f*ck.

Ok fine I'm not wasting time. Abandon quest. Yeah I'm going to darkest 2 with same team, right now. Wait, where the hell is my 4th trinket?! Either the game took it back or it disappeared from me abandoning mission or what? I have no idea, haven't looked it up. But I'm back to having to use my last houndmaster for guard. Dammit.

Mission goes better with Vestal. But the stress is bad. Hound his 100 and boom, selfish. Dammit. He's a jerk for every fight. On the 2nd boss room he switches guard from Vestal to another and almost gets her killed. My hellion hits 100 too but she overcomes and is awesome. We might make it.

On the way to boss 3, random fight, and houndmaster goes down. I think he hit 200 stress and just died. Maybe a crit? It was weird, happened so fast. I finished that fight with 3 and camped. 2 more battles and boss 3. It got hairy, Vestal was on deaths door once, but healed with arbalest. Whew. Mission complete.

Cost me 3 level 6s to get through that and 5 extra weeks of game. Up to week 70 or 71 now. Would like to finish before 99 for achievement. Darkest 3 and 4 to go, not sure if I have enough 6s for two more teams. We'll see...

Went back to this game

Perhaps I go to die
Madness

Anyway while getting my latest team destroyed it accord to me that maybe I should do some runs just to get money using newbies as cannon fodder. I could then build up town and buy stuff for the main team. I don't know I'm still relearning stuff and getting use to the new stuff.

So is the arena meaningful in anyway to the main game? Or is it totally separate?

Separate from what I’ve read. I know it uses a separate character pool.

Stele, that’s why you’re playing, reading those AARs makes me want to start it up again too.

And finished in 72 weeks.

Darkest 3 went much smoother than 2.

Spoiler:

Got teleported twice. Once from mini-boss, once on main boss. Annoying but didn't crush me.
Camped after each teleport to recover and buff a bit.

And I actually had 7 more level 6s to choose from for the last battle. And in typical fashion, after going back and leveling up some skills and thinking I double checked everything, I went in with no equipment! Ugh. That drug the fights on way longer than they should have. And maybe my plague doctor could have stuck some more stuns. But I did manage to win, despite my stupidity.

Fun game.

Think I need a break. I really do want to try and keep Dismas and Reynauld alive in a run. And I didn't get the town upgraded fully. And I didn't kill either of the Cove bosses. Maybe I'd even try some DLC later. I could see coming back to this in a few months or next year and slog through one more campaign.

Congrats!

I really do want to try and keep Dismas and Reynauld alive in a run.

Oof. That sounds like a recipe for getting your monitor punched in frustration. Unless you figure out a way to save scum.

In an attempt to break my codependent relationship with Slay the Spire, and continuing my history of only playing the hottest new games i have picked this up on sale on the PSN. I have gone in totally blind and lost all bar one of my initial party on the second dungeon, looking at this thread that seems normal though. It seems like it has really crunchy decsions so I am looking forward to getting stuck in.

So far this is my best run. Haven't had to many setbacks. I did have my pain guy die. I realized he had a high stress mode of play and been playing him that way for a bit. Didn't work out in the last dungeon but maybe I bite off more than I could chew.

Also got into modding but just skins since I haven't beat the game yet. Only minor problems on how to install the mods. All the instructions I seen said to put them in the mods directory but that didn't work. I had to put them in the hero directory under whatever class the mod was for. That was just for manual installed mods. Workshop mods were just click the button and they work.

Yeah had to directly edit the files for a few things. It was worth it. For once glad I got the PC version instead of the Switch version. I wouldn't have finished the game without mods. Just way too grindy at default with the limited carrying capacity.

I've owned this game for a few years but have only just now decided to make a serious effort at completing it. Rolling totally vanilla with no DLC or mods, on the default (easy?) difficulty. So far I've got a couple heroes to level 3 and have defeated one boss.

Have fun. If it gets too grindy the mods are right there to help you finish.

Reminder to not get too attached your adventurers. They’re there to be used as resources, not as heroes.

Also, enjoy the dulcet tones of the narrator, Wayne June.

Some experiments should have never happened. You are doing just work ending them.

I need to do this! I have owned it on Switch and PS4/Vita for yonks, yet to play beyond an hour or so on any of them.

Curious is the trapmaker's art, unable to witness his own efficacy

Slowly making progress: upgraded most buildings to 50% or so, killed all the "tier one" bosses. Have a core squad of heroes at level 5 with a decent backbench in the 3's.

I haven't done any hard/very hard missions (nor any long missions) yet, so I expect my casualties will begin to mount soon...

Just don't get hooked to any of your party members. They are not RPG characters, but instead just vessels to move along the story and upgrades. They are utilities.

I'm surprised there hasn't been any information about the sequel since the announcement. It's supposed to launch as Early Access on Epic sometime this year but that's all we know.

Except Reynauld and Dismas. Love them.

I kinda gave up on this game. I’ve got a bunch of max levels, tons of high level gear, every building and resource and money to burn. After 362 hours I’m burnt out in trying to defeat the Darkest Dungeon itself. I think it’s the second mission that killed the joy of the game for me.

I found maps online for the Darkest Dungeon quests and followed those so that I knew where to go and what to do. It's cheating, kinda, but I didn't have the time or patience to beat my head against a wall over and over again.

Yep since they're the only fixed maps in the game that's fair. And since they change the rules and you can't send characters back in there again to retry.

Just more artificial game lengthening. Instead of a nice rotation of 6-8 characters that is good for other maps you have to grind out 12 (16?) for the Darkest levels.

It's a fun game but the base difficulty is way too much grind. If I hadn't used mods I would never have finished.

I didn't see a Darkest Dungeon 2 thread, so I guess here is as good as any place.

Darkest Dungeon 2 has been the main game I’ve been playing lately. I keep saying I’m going to stop and play something else, but then I start another run. I had 60-70 hours in the first Darkest dungeon. I don’t think I made it terribly far. I think I had a full max level party but I still had a ways to go to win. In theory, I like the features of the first game better, but it was just too repetitive. I think working my way through the Acts in Darkest 2 keeps me interested.

Speaking of, I just won three Acts in a row (2-4). I think something just clicked. Unlocking stuff helps too. The boss fight of my last run was crazy. During the fight I lost 2 of my party members. I had my highwayman and flagellant. They were both low on HP, but I had the boss down to 20+. The highwayman had 9 out of 10 stress. I decided to gamble because I didn’t think there was any other way. I healed my flagellant on the highwayman, giving him 1 more stress. It worked, he was resolute and healed a bit. The flagellant lasted a couple more rounds and then he went down, but before doing so he got the boss with blight. My highwayman got a critical hit, but had some damage over time status, I don’t recall which. He would potentially die during his next turn because he was at death’s door. That blight my flagellant left as a parting gift took down the remaining HP and killed the boss for the win.

It was the most exciting battle I’ve had in this game. It required some luck, but my plan worked and I barely eked out the chapter 4 win.

I've been playing a lot of DD2 too. It's a much smoother experience than the original, and while I do kind of miss the brutality and challenge of the first game, this one is still really good on its own merits.

There's a good interview with the developers over at Eggplant, in which they mention that one of the priorities for the new game was to better respect the player's time. It clearly shows, I'm in the fifth act after only a couple of months of playing, while the first game took me literally years to finish.

I just beat the final act (Act 5). Phew, the last boss was a doozy and I didn't think I'd have a chance once I saw it, but as I kept battling my hope grew. It was a pretty long battle. I don't think there is any more content, other than trying with different heroes, or seeing if I can take this same team and beat all 5 acts with it. There are some achievements that may be fun pursing. But, I feel good about moving to something else now. I ended up liking this much more than I thought I would.
