NFL 2021: The offseason and draft thread

Good luck if Mac Jones is getting him that ball.

Getting my 2nd COVID vaccine on Draft day, April 29. Please let me not be knocked out!!

Well, the chart shows they'd be a good pair. Throw it short(er) and on point and Deebo will take it places.

Yeah, stuff like this is exactly why people think it will be Mac Jones. Deebo, Kittle, and Aiyuk are all YAC machines. Hitting them on quick timing routes, on time and in stride, is job #1 of the QB in this offense.

Definitely worth three firsts to move up to take a guy who looked good when he had two wide receivers better than anyone else in the world.

Are you planning on resurrecting Jerry Rice and TO too?

The potential QB related fallout of this draft alone is building up to maybe 10-15 years of entertainment.

I really need to invest some time knowing these prospects better so I can enjoy 3 years from now whatever failure and successes are panning out.

I mean, if you wanted to recreate the guy who invented the term YAC along with a freakishly long-armed all-time great YAC monster, a good start would be drafting the league's YAC-per-catch leader along with a
freakishly long-armed
YAC specializing receiver.

Right now, if there's one thing the Niners aren't concerned about, it's the talent level of their top receiving targets.

Adam Schefter, who was kinda ground zero for the "Niners definitely want Mac Jones" talk, has started dialing it back somewhat, saying the Niners are "keeping an open mind" with pick #3.

Meanwhile, Shanahan and Lynch will be attending Justin Fields' second Pro Day, a throwing session that previously wasn't planned but became a thing because the Niners requested it. They're also attending Trey Lance's second Pro Day.

Really good article that covers a lot of the "ick" I feel around the narrative for Justin Fields. I'm really really hoping the 49ers will make the right choice and pick Fields. Still... it's baffling the hurdles black quarterbacks have to clear that white quarterbacks get to breeze through.

PFF had J.T. O'Sullivan on as a guest for one of their podcasts/YT videos. They asked him the question, "What does Mac Jones do better than Justin Fields?". I wish I could just clip the 5 or so minutes that followed that question, but here's a link directly to the question, and watch the conversation that goes until about the 43 minute mark. J.T. gets to the heart of it at the 39:45 mark.

Aaron Donald has been accused of beating the crap out of somebody. Breaking their arm, giving them a concussion, and a cut near the eye that required 16 stitches. All because the victim apparently "accidentally bumped into Donald early Sunday morning".

Now that was an answer!

Maybe Fields can play WR. If we had a real combine I wonder if we'd have heard that question popped on him.

If he was 6-2, 210 like Lamar, I bet the question would get asked, combine or no. His size is probably the only thing keeping that at bay. Not that there aren't any 6-3, 227 pound receivers, but having size closer to the QB ideal helps.

But speaking of black QBs and position change, this exact thing is the reason Trey Lance went to NDSU. He was recruited by Power 5 schools. They wanted him at safety, at linebacker, or at wide receiver. The scouting services changed his designation from "QB" to "ATH" (athlete) after an early visit to a school where the coach wanted to offer him at safety instead of QB. He had to go down to the lower level to find an opportunity to play QB.

Both would be my pick before Wilson. Heck, I'd maybe take Mac Jones because he has the processing that Wilson doesn't.

That really sounds like CTE rage.

Shhhhhh. You're pre-empting stances I want to claim for myself in my draft guide.

WHEN?!

When I finish looking at defensive linemen and sh*t!

Here's a preview though. Mac Jones is my #2 QB and I think he's perfect for the 49ers:

Listen, if it's wrong to literally start chanting "OH NO NOT AGAIN AGAIN" the moment the 49ers are on the clock, I don't want to be right about anything ever again.

You got a Super Bowl win. You don't get to have this too.

Waldman puts his out April 1 so everyone has a chance to read it. Take note!

Interesting, not-necessarily-meaningful wrinkle in the "who will the 49ers draft" question.

John Beck, the former NFL QB, is close with Kyle Shanahan. Beck was a backup QB in Washington when Shanny was running the offense there. (Shanahan also claims he fought to get the Texans to draft Beck in 2007, but was ignored)

Beck has since gone on to become a private QB coach, in the Tom House mold.

Over the past few years, he's worked as private coach for most of Shanahan's QBs.

He worked with Matt Ryan when Shanahan was in Atlanta.

He's worked with Garoppolo, Beat Hard, and Mullens since Shanahan has been in San Francisco.

He's been training four QB prospects for the draft. One is Justin Fields. The other three: Zach Wilson, Kyle Trask, KJ Costello. He recently added a 5th draft prospect client: Trey Lance.

And with the 3rd overall pick, the San Francisco 49ers take...QB KJ Costello!

Come on, that's clearly not an actual place name.

I had 3 or 4 of those last time I was out

...in January 2020...

...now I am sad.

Not only does California have a Rancho Santa Margarita (in Orange County), but also just a plain Santa Margarita (in San Luis Obispo County, not far from me).
