NFL 2021: The offseason and draft thread

Still, it's weird for the Jets to do well

Feel like you could have just ended your sentence here and it would have been completely accurate in almost any situation.

Watson's lawyer has spoken, and so we've seen a glimpse into their defense strategy. And, uh, it's not good.

Basically, all the encounters that included sexual contact were consensual. But the encounters that didn't, the ones that are alleging he was pushing for sex to happen? Those ladies are mistaken, there was no sex seeking.

So he wasn't looking for sex unless sex somehow happened, and in those cases it was consensual sex. How all these massages took a turn for the sexual in spite of his non-sexual intentions is left unexplained.

Uh that’s not a defense. That’s basically trying to claim that all these woman wanted to have sex with him after 30 minutes. Even if he weasels his way out of this he is getting at least a year ban from the league.

Ryan Fitzpatrick exists so if you have a terrible o-line, you plug him in for half the games and protect your QB while you build it up for the next season.

Tyrod Taylor too.

I wonder who the next journeyman starting QB is going to be when these two are done. Who is a good but athletically limited starter that you can comfortably start for a while but you're always looking to improve on? Someone smart enough to roll into town and learn your system quickly.

It's early days in his career still, but I could see Gardner Minshew being that guy.

Darnold!

Maybe Wentz once that contract ends.

If someone had told me a team had traded Darnold for a 6th this year and a 4th next year and I'd have thought that sounded fair for both teams, but . . . a 2nd next year? With what Darnold has shown so far, with everybody knowing the Jets are taking a QB anyways? Who were the Panthers bidding against?

This has to be to at least a large degree "Well, Tannehill got good once he got away from Gase, so . . ."

They only had to convince one organization that he still resembles the #3 overall pick.

Garoppolo cost the Niners a 2nd. Leaving aside Jimmy's injury issues since then

Might not have aged well, but at the time everyone thought that the Pats could have gotten a lot more for Garoppolo.

Everything about this story is awful

yep

Usually, you find someone who does a good job and, you know, book them again and again. Maybe have a small group of go-to favorites so availability isn't an issue. There's only a few possible reasons to be hitting up every female massage therapist in the city, and they're all pretty bad.

I hard disagree on this one, the number of therapists is one of the few relatively unsurprising things about this. If you're looking for one on a near daily basis, you're subject to their schedule, not yours. In addition, I'm not regularly traveling between 30+ cities where I want to find someone local.

Everything else about this story is terrible, though.

The owners are expected to approve a proposal to alter the league's uniform number rules.

The new rule would open up a lot more number possibilities for eligible receivers as well as the defensive back 7.

The current rules:
QB, K, P: 1-19
RB: 20-49
WR: 10-19, 80-89
TE: 40-49, 80-89
DB: 20-49
LB: 40-59, 90-99
OL: 50-79
DL: 50-79, 90-99

The proposed update:
QB, K, P: 1-19 (unchanged)
RB, WR, TE: 1-49, 80-89
DB: 1-49
LB: 1-59, 90-99
OL: 50-79 (unchanged)
DL: 50-79, 90-99 (unchanged)

As a result, George Kittle started trolling Brandon Aiyuk about taking his #11:

Last year, Kittle beat Aiyuk in YAC by 7 yards.

Jokes aside, we will probably see an unprecedented amount of number changing this offseason if the proposal passes as expected.

At this point, why not just say anyone can have any number? Is it really that difficult for a ref to decide that an OL is too far downfield if his number isn't 73?

Why change the scheme?

The Chiefs ran out of usable numbers at a position group last year.

Between number retirements, expanded practice squads, etc, it's actually been common for teams to be low on available numbers at a given spot.

Aren't you too young to be this cynical?

It's more about being able to spot illegal formations quickly, pre-snap. Doubt the refs will ever give that up.

Loosening up the restrictions on everyone else just makes sense though. More players are going to be able to keep their college numbers.

Some teams are perpetually up against limits from their number retirements - I know the 49ers with 12 number retirements have only 87 possible numbers left to fit a 65-69 man active roster + practice squad during the season, and when positional restrictions mean you can't just put those guys in any available number you want, you get position groups with some number gymnastics required at the bottom of the roster.

How did the Niners not trade for that?

Clowney is meeting with the Browns for a second time this offseason. I expect his $ cost will have come down enough they'll sign him. His elite run D should be a big boon to them.

Browns continuing to try to add people that make me not want to root for the team.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop to portray Sean Payton in Bountygate movie. Where in Sean Payton's face does one find the King of Queens?

Will this be handled as well as the "excellent" Draft Day?

Anything that helps tell the story of what pieces of crap Payton and Greggggggggg are is A+ in my book.

Bite your tongue, Draft Day is a national treasure. It's the Hallmark Christmas Movie of April.

Is this going to be a comedy? Happy Madison seems like it's going to be a bumbling idiot comedy movie, which sounds an awful lot like it'll be loosely based on things.

The real question is:

WHO WILL PLAY GREGGGG WILLIAMS?!?!

I hope it ends the same way as Uncut Gems.

Draft Day is the best thing to happen to the Browns in my lifetime, and I'm 41.

Spoiler:

(I could be a RB, TE, LB, or DB, but soon I could also be a WR).

Julian Edelman cut by Patriots. Failed physical; talk around the interwebs is it was just a procedural move before he retires.

Wonder if he ends up in coaching. He can come back to the Bay Area where he's from originally, and be an assistant WR coach under Wes Welker.

Everything isn't about you, &Legion^.

Pffft, he's going to Tampa.

He's not a Jaguar QB though.
