Fortnite

Right, I have the Save the World (and play solo, though I'd argue the game is definitely not designed for that), but refuse to touch the PvP mode. I was curious which mode those updates are for.

The StW changes were a lot to process, but I think I like them. Also, I have several thousand extra Pure Drops of Rain now, along with hundreds of the other evolution mats.

Another change of note is that Daily Quests now give gold bars instead of copper coins, they got rid of the gold bar cap, and converted copper coins to gold. So I have like 40k gold bars now.

I often play the special event quests solo on an easy map (assuming there's no level requirement) so I can enjoy the dialogue without any pressure to rush through.

I've also been joined to 3 Defend the Homebase missions since the patch. I can't remember the last time I joined one before the patch, so maybe something got adjusted there as well.

I think it's probably just more people doing them. There tend to be waves of it after big updates of when the game goes on a 1/2 off sale.

So the new dungeon mode in Save the World is fun, although the first couple times I played I had no idea what was going on. I get why there's a timer and things to keep you moving. Otherwise you'd end up with people going AFK or taking way too long. It still feels rather hectic though, but maybe I'm just older than the target audience.

I'm not sure if we're supposed to separate or stick together. It seems like separating is better for exploring and finding the key, but then if you get to the boss or exit door separately, being separated can cause a party wipe. Maybe it will help once I know the maps better.

I think if these were expanded into a much larger game without time limits, it would be a lot of fun. Either co-op with friends, like Left4Dead, or single-player. Feels like an FPS Gauntlet. Somehow stuck an ARPG in my co-op tower defense/battle royale game.

The other day on the Xbox home screen there was a Fortnite ad with a Star Wars stormtrooper on it. So I re-downloaded Fortnite and... no Star Wars characters anywhere. They should have just Rick-rolled me. That would’ve made me laugh at least.

I believe it's in the battle royale mission, in case you were playing the single player stuff.
And maybe you have to buy Jedi Fallen order too? IDK, honestly. Just guessing.

It was in the Battle Royale store for 1500 vbucks, or you got it for free with Jedi Fallen Order. Not sure how it works with Xbox since I was looking at PC but I'd check there if you haven't

I love this stuff, but sadly I hate the building in Fortnite. I want to play Jedi FO but I'm waiting. If this somehow conveyed a skin in Apex Legends (by the same devs as Jedi!) I'd be throwing money at the screen.

I played a lot of Save the World right up until around when they launched Battle Royale when I fizzled out on it. I occasionally dipped a toe back into StW, and I played probably like 10 rounds of BR here and there, but never really clicked with it. Then I saw the announcement at the Game Awards that they were doing some kind of Star Wars announcement in Fortnite, and I figured eh, I'm curious what these in-world events are like, I should download it again and take a look.

The day of the Star Wars event, I logged in and went to play, but didn't really understand how to access the event, and I never did figure that out. But I played a round or two of BR and got a handful of kills and realized this game is kinda fun? And then I started exploring all the challenges I could do and found those to be interesting and fun too, and now suddenly I'm up to about level 75 on my battlepass and have probably played 20 hours or so in the last couple of weeks. Who knew that one of the most popular video games in the world is pretty good?

Dude! The game is freeking excellent. And as far as multiplayer goes, it’s the most fun I’ve had with friends. Keep in mind that we never played to win. We were just trying to come up with dumb ways to entertain ourselves. Like building a giant vert ramp and pretending to be Tony Hawk riding a shopping cart. Until some try-hard ambushes us and wipes us out.

I get the whole thing about hating something new that seemingly came out of nowhere and then becomes so ubiquitous that it makes you want to puke every time you see it. But there’s a reason that Fortnite BR is as popular as it is.

A - It’s a brilliant MP game with a building mechanic that has never been done before
And
2 - they made it free so anyone with a platform can play

I had a similar run, logical. Even gave them $10 for a pass. And then by the time the next pass rolled around I was bored and done. Fun for a bit, but not for long, for me anyway.

I may well end up where Stele is, I'll be curious to see how I react to whatever the next event is. Just last night I hit 100% on the Winter Challenges, which was something I anticipated as a real accomplishment, but when I did it...nothing happened? I mean, I got whatever rewards were associated with the last challenge, but I thought maybe there'd be an extra reward or something else might happen, and at least for the moment it seems there's nothing. Hm.

Meanwhile I have completed 7 "missions" for this season and have collected 7 of the 8 hidden letters, so just a handful more challenges to complete to 100% the "Alter Ego" challenge and clear out most of the main challenges. I'm also at close to level 90 on the Battlepass now. I think it's pretty safe to say I'm going to 100% everything, and I will probably stop playing at that point, and then I'll see how drawn to the game I feel when the next content update launches.

I went to dig up this thread and was surprised to find I'm the last one who posted here. Contrary to my prediction above, although I skipped the first month or so of Season 2, I ended up falling hard back into Fortnite, and just over this weekend I unlocked the alternate skins for all the main unlocks and hit level 115 or so on the Battlepass, which was pretty much where I ended the last season. As a big X-Men fan, I think it was the release of the X-Force skins that really prompted me to dive back in, even if I didn't end up buying them (which I am totally regretting now and hoping they will make those available for sale again soon).

The thing that hooked me in last season and brought me back this season is the challenge structure around the battlepass. There are so many interesting and varied things to try to accomplish, and a fun game sitting around those objectives. I just really enjoy spending 90 minutes or so at a time switching mindsets between tackling 2 or 3 specific challenges and also just playing the game. For this season, I spent a lot more time in the special gameplay modes--the spy infiltration, elimination brackets, and large team battles with special intelligence drops were all fun mix-ups on the usual formula.

It's funny, I bought in to the game before Battle Royale was even a part of it, and when the BR part blew up, I mostly just ignored it. I played probably 10 matches over the course of 2+ years of it being the biggest game in the world, but just didn't really care. Then last winter I was bored and wanted to check out the Star Wars stuff and I just fell down the rabbit hole. I have to imagine I'll end up playing through the next season too, I'm excited to see what they announce next weekend.

I've gotten back into the game lately when my son started playing.
I have also of course now played significantly more than he is.
The best thing I found is that my PC will play Civ6 and Fortnite at the same time, so I can usually switch back and forth while waiting on the other.
Agreed on all of the little quests you can do now.

It's been fun playing BR with my 11yo. Teaching him to take it less seriously.

Took advantage of the long Season 2 to level him up a ton, getting him most of the gold skins he wanted, and we made sure we finished all the Deadpool missions to get that skin for him. I might have purchased the sock monkey skin for myself. Maybe. (totally did)

Turns out me as a mid-range AR and him as a no fear shotgunner can win a lot of duos matches.

He's also a big fan of EDM, so the deadmau5, etc. concert was a fun distraction for us one day.

We just livestreamed the Season 3 opener -- and we're setting time aside for when the servers are back up.

Can't say I ever thought a free online BR game would be "bonding time", but here we are.

I'm having some similar fun with my son. However, he immediately started having bad behavior watching or playing with others, such as calling them idiots or morons when not doing what he suggested. That has led to some discussions that I expect I will be having with him a lot if we wants to have continued access to that game.

Yup! Been working on my boy for a while on that. When it gets bad -- it goes away for a while. His favorite is accusing everyone who kills him of cheating. :eyeroll: He is forbidden from saying the word "aimbot" anymore.

The flip side is that he spent a while being mocked and teased by some "friends" from school. It led to a period where he'd only play with me, and we had a lot of conversations about relationships. Being on the receiving end definitely helped broaden his viewpoint.

I will also suggest that a lot of Youtube streamers use pejorative epithets. He went through a phase of calling everyone "kid". We've had to address that sort of thing frequently, but mine tends to understand and minimize when it's explained to him.

Hello! Does anyone happen to have an active invite they aren’t going to use? Maybe invites don’t even exist anymore, but on the off chance they do, I’ve got a toddler who plays Save the World and I don’t mind that she uses my account except I can’t play with her.

As I understand it Epic has basically stopped development of the game and my family’s bought plenty of founders packages and V-bucks and stuff. If I could get her set up with an invite that’s going unused that would be ideal.

My 13yo daughter and I have been playing Duos off & on over the past year. It's been great to cooperate with her, discuss strategy, review match recordings to see what went wrong...and encourage those have-to-decide-quickly moments. The Fortnite BR monetization is super fair, and honestly they keep presenting great reasons to keep playing. Some of which is: the game will always be different in a month or two, so the version you can play now won't be available forever.

If anyone is looking for a non-jackass kid and/or grownup to team up with, feel free to message me; or Epic username should be in my profile.

I do the same with my son. It's fun playing duos and teaching him tactics. We've gotten pretty good in the last year. Not top level by any means, but we can win time to time.

I play with my son sometimes. Except it's him teaching me tactics, not the other way round. I love watching him play sometimes - I really think he's incredibly good at the game. I've watched him win games of squads on his own, sometimes getting two or three consecutive wins, just watching his hands move around the switch pro controller is bewildering for me. His willpower is pretty low, and sometimes we struggle to get him to try other games / forms of entertainment, but during the lockdown and him being out of school, Fortnite has been amazing to keep him connected with his friends, so I just balance the pro's with the con's.

New season! I like the new mechanics this time around.

I wasn't wild about the last season... I did not end up liking having many of the quests expire week-to-week (I assume the plan was to prompt me to play more frequently, but instead it made me feel more resigned to not being able to complete stuff in time and so why bother). I ended up buying the last 15 or so levels on the battlepass because I had plenty of V-bucks and I wanted to make sure my Mando had his Baby Yoda.

The crafting and animals stuff this season seems fun so far, though I wish crafting resources were more abundant. And I think I still haven't found any mechanical crafting bits? I am not interested in much of the battlepass lineup...I got Lara Croft, which is fine, but not much else up the tree interests me. Anyway, I keep popping in a few times a week and playing for an hour or so and it keeps being fun. I'm always happier the more there are random goals to accomplish rather than just playing a battle royale, and so far this season seems to have a decent enough set of that stuff for me. But I'm going to be more chill about it this season, if I finish at level 60 or something, no big deal, I don't really care about the stuff higher up the tree.

For soccer/football fans...I have heard of Neymar as a talented player before, but I don't think I previously ever heard him referred to as "Neymar Jr."--is it possible that my recollection of a great player named Neymar was about this guy's father and I am just old, or if I'm someone who barely pays attention to soccer and have heard of a Neymar, it's Neymar Jr. and I just hadn't noticed the Jr. previously?

The easiest way to get mech parts is harvesting cars and tractors. You still only get a few per vehicle max, but it's relatively consistent.
I like the dual weapon path, primal vs standard, but I wish more of the info was in game. I have to keep looking things up online.
One feature I wish they would add is auto waypoints for selected quests.

Agreed about waypoints. As someone whose main focus is completing quests, it requires too much work to check the quest list and see where the icon on the map is (if there is one) and then try to place a waypoint on the area, especially because of the way selecting quests and highlighting the map works.

Ok... my brother dragged me in to this game... Last time I played... like 4 years ago, I got stomped hard and fast by everyone building massive structures and decided it was not my game. Now it's different, I'll admit to enjoying a few wins.

I assume I will stop winning every match as the matchmaking catches up to us...

I am not sure of the benefits of crafting... the games I'm playing don't seem to last long enough to matter... Maybe that changes with more experienced players.

I tried looking for a tips and tricks guide... but man there is a lot of fortnite content out there. Anyone got any recommendations?

Crafting is just a week old and is part of the gimmick for the new season (although it works in a very similar fashion to upgrade benches in prior seasons). If you harvest some bones, you can bump up one of your primal weapons to the next tier - but it doesn't make a whole lot of difference, and the best and most efficient route to better weapons is still chests and killing other players, imo.

I don't presume to be good enough to offer any tips (I play with my son, who is 8, and he is quite a bit better at the game than I am), except to say that getting comfortable with building - even just throwing up a wall here and there - is going to be helpful. Oh, and play with headphones, if you can, and listen out for the footsteps of other players. The sound design is not exactly Hunt: Showdown, but you can get the drop on others if you know they are coming.

It's funny you talk about how you are winning a lot. My son and I have been doing extremely well this season (got our first ever back-to-back duo wins today), and while I'd like to imagine it's because we are awesome, I can't help wondering if Epic have made some changes to the SBMM or shoved more bots into lobbies or something. I'll have to see how we fare in the coming weeks.

Is building less important now? I haven't played since 2017. Building killed it for me, but I still hold a candle for the fun, colorful style and 3rd person perspective.

In the meantime, I've played an insane amount of Apex Legends.

It's very important. However, they added skill-based matchmaking at the end of 2019, so you don't run into very many pro builders if you're mediocre like me.

I wish there was a version of Fortnite without the building, to be honest. Easily my least favorite part of the game.

Also you can work around good builders to an extent of your decent with other fps mechanics including a layer of stealth.
Most players are move fast no matter what, so a bit of patience can work wonders.

Yeah haven't built a wall yet... At least at my level it's a waste of time.
