Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

Bobbywatson, we have a deskside Alienware, and it's very high quality. It also lets you put in your own hardware and still maintain the warranty and support contract.

I'm really loving the current course I'm sitting through (hence my constant posting recently). It's on biological/chemical warfare, as well as briefings on infectious diseases. I'm just finishing up a brief on Coronavirus given by the top guy at the Army's Institute for Infectious diseases. Incredibly eye-opening and a stunning amount of knowledge being dropped. What a privilege!

Dell. I wanted to get something that I could upgrade a few years down the road, but eventually I realized that I will just end up getting a new computer instead, so I decided a Dell I won't be able to upgrade was fine.

Depends how they put it together. Some models do end up having upgrade options, even if you sometimes have to do some research on specific video card makes and brands or whatnot.

And that's actually a typical delivery with Dell. Their estimates seem to be of the worst case scenario variety, accounting for delays on parts, large volumes of priority orders, etc. Everything I've ordered from them, including monitors, have arrived way ahead of schedule.

I'm pretty sure the model I got does not have a standard size motherboard, so that limits the options. Graphics card (I got an RTX 3060Ti) should be upgradable (assuming scarcity is not longer a problem in five years). The model I got only has a 512 GB SSD, but I have a few 3.5" HDDs around here that I can use.

Also I forgot to include my apartment number in my address, and Purolator won't deliver because of it, so I had to call Dell to have them update the ship-to address. Which is actually reassuring, even if it means I won't be able to play with my new rig this weekend. I only have myself to blame for this. Oh well, at least I still have Dragon Quest XI to play with.

I have had a lot of lows lately. I've been struggling with my depression and stress levels. So I'm going to be very grateful for today.

I loved today. I had a great night's sleep. Work went well and was productive. My kid played a cute April Fools' joke on me and made me laugh. We booked a vacation for next week. I got a new job offer. We're ordering pizza for dinner. I get to see my brother tonight, and bring him the joy of a PS5 I was able to snag for him. Today is a good day.

That's all really great to hear.

Edit: Glad you had a great day ThatGuy42.

Janet Garcia has joined the Minn Max podcast. Woot.

ThatGuy42, we are all celebrating with you. It's the small things that combine to have the biggest impact on life. Cultivate them and enjoy them, they are the heart of good experiences.

Yeah! That brings me a pinch of happiness just from hearing about it, ThatGuy42! Robear, has it right. The small things can be the most impactful and the most memorable. Happy for you, buddy.

My new monitor has shipped and is currently scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday.

There's a whole backstory to this one. I started seriously paying off credit card debt in 2019. My plan was that, when that balance got down to zero, I'd celebrate by spending some of the money I was no longer throwing away on interest on a new monitor and GPU.

And then I made the last payment about a year ago. My choices for a new monitor were "out of stock", "huge markup", and "might as well keep the old one for a while longer." So I waited. And I may well be waiting another year for a new graphics card.

But for now, there's a Gigabyte M27Q headed my way.

Couple of small loves:

Florida opened up coronavirus vaccines to everyone 16yo and older yesterday, and my wife was able to go get her first Moderna shot with no trouble at all. She says it was a smooth process throughout. Really glad to see that availability here is steadily increasing to the point that anyone who wants one can get it. Hopefully that situation continues to expand nationally and internationally.

I also love that I was able to plant a tree. When Hurricane Sally came through it felled or made unstable all of the 30+ year old trees in my back garden. The remaining trees standing needed to be cut down for safety. The extent of the damage to the region meant that it was a while until I could have a stump service come to remove the stumps from the ground. In the meantime, I saw some new growth bravely poking out of a couple of stumps. I took some cuttings and tried growing them in pots over the winter. Only one survived, but it established roots and I saw active budding this week. Today I selected a new site and planted the sapling. Hopefully it will grow into a strong, healthy tree and--in some small way--the trees I had before the storm will live on.

Two great loves. Grats on both fronts.

That’s either the exact same tree, or a clone of the tree. However you prefer to look at it.

My wife is trying new and different vitamins, probiotics, supplements with me so I live forever. I must say it is fairly amusing. So far, my gas has taken many interesting sounds upon escape, frequency of escape, and odors upon release. My pee also ranges from fluorescent yellow or orange, to crystal clear. I know this may belong somewhere else if at all, but I'm a guy, and I randomly love it.

I woke up early enough to get back into bed with a cup of tea after putting the bin out and am browsing gwj before work. I know the glamour is unbounded.

WE GET IT. YOU HAVE TEA AND A BED!

Sheesh.

Height of Luxury this.

A simple post today.

I really love the album The Real Thing by Faith No More.

That was my favorite album by FNM.

I inadvertently discovered a neat little trick the other day. On my laptop (macbook) I fired up Steam and then launched Dominions 5 remotely from my PC. In the tools menu there is an option to open the user data directory. Doing that opened an Explorer window and dropped me to a view of my PC desktop. So that's a cheap way of getting remote control with no extra software.

I think I'd put Angel Dust above it, and some of my favorite tracks are from King for a Day and Album of the Year, but it was one of the first cassettes I ever bought, and I still love it to pieces

That album came out while I was in college and I had pretty much stopped listening to anything new. It was one of the exceptions.

I also like their covers of "Easy" and "I Started a Joke".

The Real Thing, Underwater Love, and Zombie Eaters are criminally underplayed compared to Epic and Falling to Pieces.

Abso-f*cking-lutely

The whole album is incredible.

I have a small roast ham in the fridge that I have been failing to eat it for a week. I’d resigned myself to throwing it away untouched (hate wasting food) but it’s ‘use by date’ says it’s good for another three days. Whoo!

Also, I had to call a buisness message line and one of the voices giving recorded information sounded like Matt Berry from IT crowd and Toast of London. It was an unexpected delight.

Freeze it. My wife and I baked a 12 lb ham for Easter (for just the two of us). Lots of leftovers this week, and plenty of freezer bags for some time in the future.

This. Couple weeks ago, I made a ham pot pie from the leftover Thanksgiving ham.

Good advice thanks!
