The thread for movies that aren't going to get their own thread but are still in theaters

Had no clue they also had graphic novels. Just checked it out and works great. Will save me some $$ on Comixology.

Watched a bunch of movies this weekend. I can highly recommend the Bee Gees documentary, “Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” and Nomadland.

As far as The Bee Gees documentary goes I learned a lot of things I didn’t know, including about the racist and homophobic components of the backlash to disco. I should seek out more music documentaries. I always enjoy these.

Nomadland was very moving. I learned after the fact that most of characters were played by amateur actors who were essentially playing parts that represented their actual lives. I could tell during the movie, however, that there was something special about the supporting actors and now I know.

Watched Critters Attack which was bad, shocking I know. It was kind of like a hour and a half episode of Goosebumps but I haven't seen a episode of Goosebumps this bad. Basically the two have the same production quality.

The main problem with the movie was that the story didn't flow which is amazing considering Critters movies don't have much a story to follow.

Spoiler:

There were different plots going on that never connected but for a brief 15 second scene.

I think they were going for a joke but I'm really not sure. This brings me to the other problem of the movie. I wasn't sure if they were trying to jokes most of time or if it was just a bad store telling. There were a few moments I did find funny like a texting joke. Also the callbacks to the other movies were fun.

This might be a so bad it is good movie. I think if you liked the direct to video later Tremors movies you might like this also. I was entertained by the train wreck of a movie.

It’s not yet not in theaters, but I’m looking forward to Raya.

Is Raya and the Last Dragon a sequel to The Last Dragon?

Most definitely!
Or should I say sho nuff!?

Although they put a little too much nonsensical human plot in my Kaiju (Titan) flick, Godzilla vs Kong was a fun Kaiju romp. Thumbs Up!

My kids love it. I enjoyed it overall.

Watched Mary Queen of Scots and liked it. I was confused when Pennywise the clown took over and started beheading people. In England we all float.

Costumes were nice to look at. Acting was great. Story held me for the full two plus hours. And I learn if the queen is a evil hell clown be nice to her.

Found myself watching Life of Pi on Amazon Prime yesterday. Its actually quite a tough survival story told in an almost whimsical style with borders of fantasy in many places. But then that's sort of the point - whats real, what isn't and what story the listener would prefer to hear. I loved it

I absolutely LOVE that movie. The next time you watch it you’ll have the cheat sheet for what symbolizes what. (If you were paying attention, that is). It really does put a new spin on the story.

The actor who plays adult Pi died recently. Sad.

I'm never sure whether to post these here or in the appropriate Netflix/Amazon Prime thread these days. However I did watch Palm Springs on amazon prime the other day (again) and it was a very enjoyable romp in the Groundhog Day mold, only with considerably more sex, drugs and rock and roll.

Adam Samberg makes for a very affable slob who finds himself stuck in a time loop of the same day (his girlfriend's friend's wedding) and accidently dragging the maid of honor into the same loop (and another wedding guest who spends much of the film hunting him down and murdering him in various imaginative ways to extract revenge. Given that person is played by J K Simmons, you can imagine what that character is like) before bonding with the maid of honor, finding a bit of purpose in life and, well, you can guess the rest.

it's rude, funny, occasionally cringe inducing but over all a hell of a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.

Love and Monsters definitely ranks amongst the better YA adaptations there have been over the last couple of years. Dylan O'Brien makes for a very engaging and charismatic lead, Michel Rooker pops up and very effective sort of cameo roll, and it even manages the remarkable feat of having an actual narrative to work through. The special effects are also excellent. And it has a dog.

I really didn't know what I should be expecting, and over all I was very pleasantly surprised.

Watched Monster Hunter over the weekend. I want my 2 hours back. It is really my own fault I knew it would be bad but I was hoping for fun/stupid bad and not just bad.

If you are thinking - maybe I will check it out. Don't. Rewatch Predator or any of many films about people fighting super strong monsters. You will be happier.

Watched The Dissident which was about the reporter that got murdered in the Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul. I wasn't really surprised by anything except two things. One the misinformation campaign using hundreds of paid trolls. I thought this was mainly Russia. The second thing that surprised me was the counter attack using the same technique. The donald dump involvement and blatant murder wasn't very shocking.

Nobody's a good standalone John Wick-like action movie. No underground secret societies, no mourning a spouse at the outset, no dog violence.

Just finished Mortal Kombat. It was good! Not great but entertaining, the action was well done without to many jump cuts, the story held together, and while it was more serious than the original it was still rather light hearted. The violence was so over the top as to not be ... off putting. I am not sure that make sense but sometimes - like in the Yakuza games - the violence is so silly and over the top that it doesn't feel that bad. It is obviously not real so it is easy to laugh at.

Would recommend

I just finished it too, on HBO Max.

Throwback to dumb action movies I loved as a kid.

Glad it was R. I've always been a Sub Zero player and despised Scorpion.

Spoiler:

But I genuinely enjoyed when Scorpion came back to kick ass and also enjoyed rooting against Zero

I kind of feel like we're at an inflection point with videogame movies where they're about to start getting...good?

Like maybe we're with videogame movies where we were with comic book movies in the days of Blade and X-Men 1?

I dunno. What's the best videogame movie ever? Sonic?

Detective Pikachu. Fight me.

...Gotta agree with that. Although TRON was fun in its day.

Detective Pikachu is excellent.

Yeah, but does it count if the movie came before the game(s)?

It was a movie about a video game, and steeped in the video game culture of the time. It counts.

Watched Mortal Kombat and liked it but oddly not as much as the original. It is a better movie on almost all counts but wasn't as entertaining to me.

Watched Shin Godzilla which I also liked. Godzilla looked like a sock puppet at times that I think was on purpose. This movie is mainly talking and trying to remake scenes of neon genesis evangelion without using evas. Oh maybe godzilla is a angel and represents the first impact.

Working my way (slowly...it's been over a week since I started) through Godzilla/Kong. I am really liking how I can stream stuff that's currently in theaters.

I mean, as soon as I'm vaxxed all the way up, I'll definitely be going back to theaters but with small kids first run movies in our house are things like Raya, Soul, and stuff that's kid-friendly. But getting to the theater is a hassle and if Warner or Disney or Universal want to make their content available to me on the service I already pay for? Sure!

My favorite video game movie is probably still Run, Lola, Run.

Watched Nobody and really liked it. Someone said it was like John Wick and indeed it was. I only had one problem with certain people knowing things they shouldn't. I think a key scene was edited out by mistake. I would never think of the better call saul actor as a action guy but he did a pretty good job in this money.

Don't forget his comedy career. If this whole serious action business takes off for him, Odenkirk has a shot at being the reverse Leslie Nielson.

Disturbing lack of Babalities in Mortal Kombat.

I’ve been watching some of the Oscar nominees. Most of them are indie films. Due to COVID? Anyway. I love indies and I don’t put much credence in big budget blockbusters.

Nomadland is excellent. Best movie.

Minari is great as well. Best actor to “Glen” I think. Best supporting actress to the grandmother I think.

Sound of Metal continues to haunt me. Best sound shoe-in. Best actor. Best director. Best screenplay. This film is incredible! Best movie? A contender for sure.
