My favorite pair of backpacking boots got lost somehow after our last camping trip. Thankfully, the 20% off REI coupons just came in so I got a pair of these lovely Zamberlans.

I don't usually respond to ads that pop up on my Facebook feed, but this seemed too good to be true. All really cheap. For sale here: www{dot}duorstb{dot}com. So yeah, these are coming my way.

Yeah, that place is fake, no one sales LEGOs that cheap. My wife tried one last year, they took forever to ship, and when the package came it was some junk from China. Luckily, it never got charged to our card so we didn’t have to dispute it.

Oh, no.. Please block your credit cards and have them replaced. It's a known scam.

Yeah. Some research later and I realize that I've been conned. Currently on call with PayPal to get the transaction reversed. Fortunately, I don't think that PayPal discloses CC numbers to merchants, so the card should be secure.

Don't drink and buy!

This is a PSA brought to you by the "Too good to be true".

Ah thanks for the reminder I want this for my upcoming birthday! I'll add to the list sent to wife and family.

This does not look like the sourdough bread I'm used to...

What do you use that for? Is it to form the dough into an interesting shape?

Malor wrote:

The basket is a banneton/brotform and the razor blade on a stick is a bread lame. The basket is for the final rest of the dough and gives it that classic sourdough spiral shape. The lame is to make cuts into the top of the bread before baking to help it expand without tearing. Some people can make amazing art with those cuts.

I am not one of those people:

That was supposed to be the letter "T" for my husband Terry. Not a vaguely penis shape with flattened testicles. :\

Malor wrote:

The bowl is where the dough rests whilst rising. It is used for making miche I think. Whichever is the one with the cool swirl pattern on top. The razor blade is for cutting the x shaped slit in the top or slashes on your baguettes. I believe that lets some of the steam out making for a crispier crust.

Thanks for the replies. I'm learnding!

My Benchmade 940 celebrated its 20th birthday and though it still has plenty of service life left in it, it is getting a little lose in the lockup. So for my 55th birthday, I got myself a replacement knife for casual carry. I thought about going with the new 940 since they now come with an upgrade in steel from the 154cm that came with mine to the new S30V powder steel. I did consider it for a hot second, but the pricetag on that knife left me feeling there was so many other knives out there that offer greater value.

This made me check and you weren't kidding. A bunch of $300+ knives on their website now. My daily carry is a griptilian and I remember I bought it for $80, but that was like 10 years ago. It is now $150. Inflation yo.

Thing is though, otherwise in the industry there is a lot of downward price pressure on high quality knives. The stuff you are seeing out of China and Taiwan is actually first rate. I would put the build quality of a WeKnife, Civivi, Kizer, or Besteel on par or better than Benchmade any day of the week. Particularly recently since the QC issues of Benchmades have been making the rounds.

This has driven the price of American made Spydercos, ZT's, and similar high end production knives closer to parity. Only Benchmade has decided now is the time to price themselves out of the market.

I love the 940, but honestly, before I spend $200 on a new 940 with S30V, I am DEFINITELY going to get a FAR superior Hogue Deka in CPM 20CV and a MUCH beefier ABLE lock for $50 bucks less (and still be American made). There is no reason in the world that the new 940 should cost over $120 other than the Benchmade Tax.

I’ve recently become a HUGE fan of Civivi knives. For a budget brand (most of their knives are about fifty bucks), the quality is absolutely outstanding. The action on their flipper knives is smooth as butter, and the designs are top notch. I’ve picked up three in the last six months, and rotate through them pretty regularly.

The top is a Dogma with a copper handle and Damascus steel. It’s a bit heavier, but absolutely stunning close up. If I’m going to a more professional environment, meetings or such, I keep the Civivi Chronic on me. It has a G10 handle and is a fantastic EDC. The last I got as a gift, the Elementum. It’s the one that got me hooked on this brand.

Those look nifty. Considering getting the Civivi Chronic in purple as an inoffensive edc now, so thanks for the enabling

Will I ever need to smoke a dozen briskets at once? Probably not. But I like knowing that I could.

If that is not a thing, it should be. I keep preparing to host a big party, even though I know herd immunity is months away at best. I am stocked the hell up for whenever it does get here.

If you have it, we're there! KC is one of the places we like to jaunt to for a random 3-day weekend. We almost went there last weekend but ended up in Hot Springs, AR instead.

Make It So.

The company I work for gives us profit sharing cheques every year and this years cheque was quite nice. And because of that I've found myself eyeing up smokers. I think I'd have to get a vertical one in case I get back into sausage making.

A colleague of mine has recently been raving about his Big Green Egg smoker. I haven't used one myself, but he says that he's had some incredible results. Evidently there's some sort of temperature control module that can be hooked up, allowing you to monitor cooking temperature and control everything through an app. I don't think I've ever seen someone as happy as that guy futzing around with his phone monitoring the slab o' beef he had cooking at home.

Yeah. That has all the joy of playing around with charcoal that men seem to love while still being a serious cooking tool. It does require more futzing about with than a pellet grill/smoker though which are a whole lot more utilitarian and less "fun". If you're just after results, go with wood pellet. If you want a toy, go with charcoal.

A good friend of mine has 2 Big Green Eggs and loves them, too. He does have the temp control module on one of them and has almost convinced me to get one for my HastyBake. Everything he has ever cooked/smoked on there that I have tasted has been wonderful. He was a complete rookie when it came to smoking meat and was instantly making delish dishes. I wouldn't trade my Hasty for one, but I wouldn't turn one down if it were given to me. There are some knockoff Eggs out there that probably work just as well.

I also have a mid-sized Traegar that I bought to take on our glamping trips. The legs fold up and it just barely fits in the back of her Explorer, but Kit doesn't like lugging it around. On the bright side, she _will_ use it at home, whereas she wouldn't ever use the Hasty. So, I bought an A-Smoke baby smoker when they did their KickStarter to just keep in the camper. I'm not sure 2 people need 3 smokers, but it's not about need, right? Right?

I don't have a silly purchase of the month to show, yet, although it has been purchased. Next Monday, my contractor will start installing the new flooring for my upstairs to get rid of this 20-year old nasty-ass carpet. It's not silly to replace it, it's silly to have someone else do it for me. I have so much crap upstairs that it will be a constant shuffle of crap to put the flooring down in 3 rooms and a bathroom and it would take me forever to do it by myself. He will have 3 young helpers with him to lug my stuff around.

Big green egg is a no-go for me if I want to smoke my own kielbasa and other smoked sausages sadly. Too small to hang anything in.

This is my first pellet smoker, though it has a modified heat diffuser that allows you to add a couple logs, so it's not pellet smoke only. Results have been good so far. I've used offset stick burners for the last 25+ years, and I got tired of messing with them on longer cooks. No matter thick gauge the metal is or how well it holds temperature, smoking a brisket for 18 hours will involve getting up in the middle of the night at least once to tend the fire. Really looking forward to never doing that again.

That reminds me that I should order some more Girl Scout Cookies; you can order those straight from the factory as well!
