LEGO Nostalgia

I can't recall if I asked this or not, but what's up with the Monkie Kid sets? My ten year old had never heard of them. Are they primarily being made to be sold in China? Because if not, they've greatly failed to get kids in my area interested.

To me it seems too much like Chinese-themed Ninjago sets. I like the overall aesthetic but outside of Lego wanting to sell more sets in China, I'm seeing a ton of overlap with the Ninjago and Lego movie sets.

Monkie Kid is based on Journey to the West a very popular story in Asia. So, yeah, it is not going to be as popular here as it is overseas. They have some Lego cartoon stuff for the characters over there also. From what I've seen the minifigs are incredible and the builds are nice.

Ninjango is more of a cyberninja setting so not really an overlap.

Are there good space/sci-fi sets that are not branded for decent prices? I have a lot of nostalgia for blacktron, m-tron, etc.

Depending on exactly what you are looking for, some of the Ninjago sets go in a very sci-fi direction. Things like Fire Stone Mech, Boulder Blaster and Kai Fighter. Given Ninjago is not licensed they tend to be better value too.

Awesome. Some of those are pretty cool. Also a lot of good pieces for MFZ mechs.

I got the Lego Mario starter course the other day. I love it and my daughter loves it too despite being too young to properly understand it. But the whole time we're playing, I'm thinking "wow, if this only existed 25+ years ago!". If this had have been a thing when I was the right age, I'd have flipped my lid over this. I don't want to go full 'old man' but the kids sure don't know how good they've got it! But I'm glad she's getting to experience it.

I did have a big laugh at how much my kid loves putting Mario in the fire. She thinks his "wah-ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaaa" noise is laughter, I think, so maybe in her mind it's not cruel at all.

Blacksmith set is available on the Lego site. Can’t recommend it strongly enough if you’re interested.

Looking at the ideas page, I see there's a Winnie the Pooh set coming soon (3/18 for VIP members, 4/1 otherwise). Comes with Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Rabbit and Eeyore.

(I also see the Bonsai Tree is still out of stock)

I caved and ordered the Blacksmith set. The fact that they're currently adding the Amelia Earhart Tribute set in for free for orders over $100 helped push this over the edge for me.

Thanks for the heads up about the Amelia Earhart set.

Order soon before it disappears forever.

Meijer near us had Lego sets on 50% off clearance. Making room on their shelves, I guess.

The Medieval Blacksmith set has arrived. I've finished bag 5 out of 14 and that apple tree build is craaaaaaaa-zy.

Stop not enabling me on the Blacksmith set!

I finished the Technic Jeep Wrangler set today. I didn’t have a blast building it and am not super in love with the final product as a play piece or a display piece.

Issue as a play piece is that the front wheels have a ton of vertical play and the back have less. This is true to the actual vehicle but results in an unsatisfying tippiness as a toy.

Issue as a display piece is that the exterior of the set is 99.8% black and yellow, meaning the other .02% sticks out like a sore thumb. There are little red, blue and orange connector bits that show in the final exterior and they look out of place. There’s no reason those pieces couldn’t have been color matched to the body pieces.

I’m glad I got my feet wet with Technic here and learned it isn’t for me. If not for that I might have blown $150 on the Ferarri.

Speaking of blowing $150 on a Lego set...

...and I don't regret it one bit.

Just another amazingly detailed set from Lego. I really enjoy these sorts of sets when they make them. I compare this to the Fishing Shop from a couple years ago. Both are beautiful when looked at from a distance and have so many interesting details as you look closer.

Ugh, the fishing shop. I stressed to my wife back then how much I wanted it for Christmas in like August but she procrastinated and it sold out everywhere before she got around to it. Learned her lesson.

Insta-buy.

Figures I finally splurged and bought myself the Lunar Module last week.

The Lunar Module is a fun build and a fantastic, utterly impressive display. Love it.

I know that this is a LEGO Nostalgia thread, but I just thought that some of you might want to see this, because Medieval sets were mentioned above. I was pretty much blown away by this castle. 5250 pieces for roughly 180€ is just insane... They even included a castle privy... Just ignore the German

We just put the “Nostalgia” in the thread title to give cover for our shameful AFOL discussions...

I don't have any more room for new LEGO sets, but I did unpack my Palace Cinema, Sopwith Camel, and Ferrari F40 the other day. I have a couple other small ones I'm going to keep, but that's about the limit of things I'll be able to display in my office here. For now.

Another fantastic set! Last night I put on Disney+ and watched The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) and Winnie the Pooh (2011) as I built this. If I could gripe about anything in this set it's that Eeyore tail isn't detachable- but that's about it.

Looks great from the back too, in both open and closed configurations:

Ok, so where's Owl, Kanga and Roo?

Yeah, just like with the Sesame Street set anyone can find some fan favorite characters missing.

I think they did do a good job on getting the four "must have" characters included- plus Rabbit, who was probably the easiest to make as a minifig out of the remaining characters.

Hopefully they'll come out with the rest, maybe in a future Disney minifig line.

Eeyore's tail not being detachable seems like one of biggest design misses in Lego history.
