Rocket League Catch All

I just tried doing 1v3 using the old split screen trick and...it doesn’t work anymore!?! They kick you for being idle if any split screen player is idle. That counts as a disconnect and since you are all players the match ends, you can’t get back in, and you get a ranked ban. Argh! That used to work with local accounts. I wonder if people were using that as a derank method so they made it ban-able.

One fewer practice challenge I can do. Now I gotta figure out some new ones.

I hate to admit it, but I thought about it for a minute or so.

Is it more or less than the F150?

Less. It’s $5.

It is gone now, I have passed the test.

Next time someone sees me playing competitive in RL, send me a message and tell me to stop. I have no idea why I keep doing it.. just endless frustration.

Maybe we should try together again?

Had the infamous, "oh no we're down one goal with 2 minutes left, I have to switch teams and play 4 on 2" asshole tonight.

Playing hoops without boost is where it’s at. That’s where all the cool kids hang out. Come join us

I did get my hoops rank this weekend.

But I'm also done with diamond rewards and no closer to champ then previous seasons.

Play for fun, right...

I'll play with ya. Can't promise I won't switch teams tho...

You took a break and now you’ve been playing standard 3v3 haven’t you?

Psyonix messed up (or fixed depending on who you ask) the standard 3v3 ranks with an overly hard “soft” reset in Seasons 1&2.

Doubles wasn’t affected as much. In solo duel most people had their rank pushed up, not down. It’s only standard that seems to have been really messed up.

Count me in too. Competent(maybe) teammates make all the difference.

Well, sh*t. I was going to join.

Which is like a toy axe...that gives me splinters.

Maybe we create a Comp channel in Discord? Join that if you're looking to grind ranks? The same three people won't be able to play together all the time.

Also, Zethi was talking about taking the Spring IGL league more seriously. Like if we get a team together, planning for practice and replay review consistently vs the Leeroy Jenkins approach.

Does anyone here play solo duel regularly? Why or why not?

pandasuit wrote:

Pretty much every session for my warm up game because:

-Don't care about the rank
-Can't screw teammates with rusty play

And after your suggestion a couple years ago, it's a quick way to get through bronze, silver ranks. So I usually spend more time there at the start of season. Can be a lot of blowout forfeit games one way or the other that end early.

pandasuit wrote:

I don't. Sweaty palms. Need to get over that as it's a great way to train.

pandasuit wrote:

I don't because I find it really boring and not fun.

I don't, it just makes me angry.

When I first started on rocket league (when it was free on PS4), I played solo duel a lot. Basically I saw it as "training". There was no custom training at the time, and someone at my work who was pretty good at the time (this was before the current bronze/silver/gold rankings), said its a good way to work on your fundamentals, and I kind of agree.

I know my high level of play clearly makes my experience more valuable than everyone elses, but IMO a) training is boring, b) no reason to worry about advanced moves and rotations if you can't find the ball and hit the ball somewhat consistently and I think Solo Duel was best for that c) solo duel is punishing if you make mistakes d) it teaches you how to take advantage of opponents mistakes. I think being decent at solo duel will probably get you through Gold rankings at standard just on fundamentals.

Of course what it doesn't teach you is passing or "smart" clears. In Solo Duel just punting the ball out of your end of the field in many cases is good enough for defense. Its not going to bounce right into an opposing teammate for a clean shot. Also, because its so punishing for mistakes, you end up being a lot more conservative than you ought to be. Back to my original statement, I think this is "good enough" for team play probably up to high gold, and is a lot more valuable than training an air dribble challenge at Silver 2 rankings if ranking up is your goal.

So at least for me it was a good way to learn how to play Rocket League, and I've played it when it was a Rocket Pass requirement, but I don't really play it anymore.

Psyonix tried to normalize solo duel ranks a lot recently. Over the last 2 seasonal resets they've moved everyone's duel MMR to be closer to your MMR in other modes regardless of if you have been playing duel. This was likely intended to get all those high ranked players who rarely play duel (except to freestyle on lower ranks) out of the lower ranks but also to just distribute the duel ranks around a lot more.

If that tactic worked out your duel rank should now be a lot closer to your general skill level than it was before. Not sure if it did work out tho. I'm finding duel to be WAY easier to rank up in now than it was a few seasons ago.

I was talking to FlamingPeasant a couple days ago about whether people would play more solo duel if it was a more friendly environment (such as private matches with people you know) or at the very least while in voice chat with a group you know.

I wish more higher level players would learn core mechanics and possession/control. So many players get to diamond/champ ranks without ever learning how to control the ball and maintain possession. They focus on bang and hope style RL and if the play ever slows down or a teammate tries to control the ball they freak out and try to hard clear the ball thus giving it away to the other team. Major pet peeve of mine.

Yeah I'm guilty of too many clears, not enough possession. Feels like when I try to slow things down though, it doesn't work out well in standard. But probably because I play with too many pubs and not enough with y'all.

Oh man I forgot to post the other night. Wed maybe? I saw I still hadn't played a tournament yet this season for the 1 goal. So I jumped in. Shaky start but we won by a goal.

Next match 4-1, other team quit a minute early. We waited...

Next round won again. Can't remember score.

Anyway, got to semifinals. Best of 3 series. Lost the first 2-1. Won the second big like 4-1 or 5-1. But right near the end, like 30 seconds left, one teammate disconnects. So we wait through the whole pre-match hoping he'll rejoin. Nope.

2 v 3 we win the semis! Score 2-1 final. 42 seconds into overtime, I got the game winner!

3rd player never returned. We got smoked in the finals in 2 games. But still. Pretty fun to win a late round like that down a player.

Anyway, so I've only played 3 tournaments ever. Out first round. Finals and won. Finals and second. Kind of fun.

I'd be down to maybe take over 1s servers and play 1v1 as a group. Swapping servers to change up matchups when we want. Everybody in discord. Could be a fun way to play 1s.

To me this is the biggest difference transitioning from Plat through to Champ. For the minute I was Champ 1 a few seasons ago...there just aren't very many mistakes to take advantage of, and as you get higher up through plat and diamond, the mistakes become fewer and fewer. I try to be a lot more conscience of my clears, but on offense I still rely too much on "throw it towards the net" assuming 50% of the time someone will screw it up and your team will score. I'm just not good enough to create my own shot. I suppose back to the original question, solo duel can help with that but for me personally, I spread my time between too many other games/things to want to build that skill. I make incremental improvements when I can, but I just don't do enough practice.. weather in training or in game for it to stick or really learn.

That's fair and to be honest ranking up in Rocket League is a pretty pointless endeavor unless you are into the competition. A lot of the time it just makes the game less enjoyable when you get to higher ranks or are obsessing about not losing your rank. Messing around in unranked without focusing on winning at all is a lot more fun.

That being said, if people did want to rank up through effective offense instead of just hoping the other team messes up, they only need to know one basic shot and that's the power shot. It's really easy to learn and the more you focus on it the more accurate you get. You can use it for passes or clears or just putting the defenders in uncomfortable positions. If you are focused on only one offensive mechanic you will get a lot of in game practice and improve over time without any out of game drills needed.

The problem with power shots, from my perspective, is they get boring. I want to do flashy mechanics and shots not just bang the ball into the net at speed. I play this game for the flashy mechanics not for the wins. If I wanted to focus on winning I wouldn't do the majority of the plays I do in games.
