Post a quote, that could have just been text but instead for some stupid reason is an image, entertain me!

If you're going the group speed average and you are going generally a bit faster than the right then it doesn't matter in my opinion.

If you're weaving in and out and cutting people off I don't think passing me was the point. You're just a sh*t driver trying to go 20 to 30 over.

Short, Yoda is

That left lane driving open fits me to a tee.

I am such a calm, docile person that easily becomes the Hulk behind the wheel at the slightest offsets.

There are drivers on Greek highways that constantly drive in the left lane with headlights on AND their left turn signal on, and on top of that are very frequently flashing their brights.

This indicates to other Greeks, "You know how you're typically somewhat willing to kill people by running them off the road to get there 30 seconds faster? I'm willing to F***ING KILL YOU F***ING KILL YOU RIGHT NOW!!!"

I *normally* move over for these Greek men, and wish them luck in their endeavors, and quote a Robin Williams movie at them...

What I realized a number of years ago is that I have no idea why someone who's driving terribly is doing it. My default goto explanations were usually "reckless driver" or "just an asshole", but then I figured out that this was all in my head. I don't actually know why they're driving that way, I'm making it up. If I instead make up a nice story for them (the wife's about to have a baby/her kid's hurt/he's listening to his mom instead of watching the road), this makes my drives much more pleasant.

I'm living in a fantasy world on the freeway anyway. It might as well be a nice one.

I read an essay once where someone speculated that being enclosed in a metal shell gives people a feeling of protection, which is why people behave differently in that situation (more aggressive, more selfish, less sensitive to other people's opinions so people are happier picking their nose or scratching their balls)

How does that explain apparently suicidal motorcyclists who drive the same way?

The helmet's the biker's protective shell.

The helmet's the biker's protective shell.

Which doesn't explain the no-helmet motorcycle die-hards that I've known in the past.

Though most surviving motorcyclists I still know wear helmets.

The thread is about fun. So it isn't worth posting if someone is not having fun.

Ageist screeds can f*ck right off.

Categorizing humans based on things they have no control over is complete bullsh*t.

If you don't think it's complete bullsh*t, try replacing "Baby boomer" with "Gay man" and have the body of the tweet say something stereotypical about broadway musicals, including words spelled with a lisp. Or replace it with "Chinese woman" and have the body say something about why there's nothing wrong with driving poorly, and be sure to substitute some r's for l's in there.

I'm not saying anything about who has it worse when it comes to stereotypes. It's not a contest. Just please don't use them, and don't spread them.

Not defending ageism, but lumping baby boomers together isn’t punching down like stereotyping gay men or Chinese women. Boomers may be many things, but they sure aren’t marginalized.

Agreed, Chumpy.

I'm thoroughly tired of the whole "boomer" and "millenial" thing where one generation blames another for its problems. We all have problems. Boomers should've known better about a lot of this stuff, but they didn't. Millenials have legitimate gripes but tossing the blame back a generation doesn't solve anything. And generalizations, as always, tend to muddy the waters more than they simplify things.

But it is a bridge WAY too far to compare racism and homophobia to intergenerational gripes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of the unspoken (or maybe it's even spoken, I don't know) guidelines on this forum is that people don't get to tell each other that they shouldn't be offended by something. Particularly when the lecturer does not have the life experience of the offendee they are lecturing.

Regardless of that...

I EXPLICITLY SAID IN MY MESSAGE THAT IT MY EXAMPLES ARE NOT THE SAME THING AS THE AGEIST COMMENT.

I'm not saying anything about who has it worse when it comes to stereotypes. It's not a contest. Just please don't use them, and don't spread them.

"It's not a contest" meaning I am explicitly not saying "boo-hoo, I'm old and I have it as bad as these marginalized groups."

Please don't distract from my message by insinuating that I was in any way comparing the three statements. What I was saying was that they are ALL THREE BAD, OFFENSIVE, BIGOTED, AND WRONG.

Do we have to have a debate about which is more wrong? What purpose does that serve? People shouldn't be sharing racist sh*t, they shouldn't be posting ableist sh*t, they shouldn't be posting homophobic sh*t, and they shouldn't be posting ageist sh*t. "I thought it was funny" is not an excuse. It's not funny, it's offensive. There is no value judgement about who deserves not to be sh*t on more than other groups. NOBODY deserves to be sh*t on.

Nope, sorry. Don't kick the nest for lols, please. -Amoebic

Vast majority of us were raised by boomers, so it isn't as though we are just pulling this criticism out of thin air - this is our lived experience that you are belittling by conflating criticism of a generation with ageism.

Badken, I get where you're coming from but that's the exact same argument that gets hauled out whenever someone criticizes white people or men. On the surface its absolutely right, but it completely ignores the history of privilege and bad behavior of those being cast as victims.

It's also just... Not ageism. The thing we're hanging on with Boomers is not their age. We're not calling them doddering old fools, or anything like that. Boomers were Boomers when I was 8, and they're still Boomers now that I'm 38. Being able to recognize the problems that generation had and call them out amounts to exactly zero about their specific age.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of the unspoken (or maybe it's even spoken, I don't know) guidelines on this forum is that people don't get to tell each other that they shouldn't be offended by something. Particularly when the lecturer does not have the life experience of the offendee they are lecturing.

Interesting point. Perhaps you should not deputize the experiences of gay people into your arguments without having lived that experience yourself. Maybe that offended me.

I also defy you to point to where anyone said directly, or even at the barest level hinted, that someone shouldn't be offended. I'll wait.

Please don't distract from my message by insinuating that I was in any way comparing the three statements.

But you were. You asked us to imagine alternate statements in the same place as the one you were criticizing. I can't think of a more fundamental example of what comparison is.

Ken, the ratio of times I see you address something serious with a not entirely invalid criticism, but miss the mark, and then angrily come back at people telling you that you missed the mark, telling them they misread you is practically 1:1. Maybe you should let your posts simmer for a bit in the text box before hitting that button.

Orodruin might dispute that.

edit: this has been rendered irrelevant by the next post.

(second edit: I was saying that nothing up there was especially offensive, what was the big deal?)

The image in question has since been deleted from the thread. It was a fairly typical criticism of boomers from a younger person.

Thanks, NSMike. I edited the comment.
