I'm no Obiwan, but it seems having the low ground is the way to go with hand-to-hand in this game...

When we went to kill Yuglar tonight, we cleared out some of the goblins around the area. Kazar got into a fight with two goblins and said "I have the high ground, I don't have the advantage," during that. Being above your enemies is definitely not a boon in this game (unless archery).

I think the server shutdown at 4AM Pacific on Rag2 isn't "clean". That is, I was working around then and logged out on my own, but when I logged back in after 4AM, a ton of work I'd done was erased, probably a half-hour or so.

Whatever reboot process is happening, I think it's maybe just shooting the server dead, instead of asking it to shut down gracefully. Recent changes are maybe lost, and it's having to resume from checkpoint.

I always close the game half hour before reset time. What you describe happens when the server restarted on unexpectedly, so I use that half hour buffer in time ever since.

We finally killed Moder on server 2 last night! Zeb, you should check out the new base upgrades.

Did the OG 2 Moders despawn or did they separate to where you could fight just 1?

The game saves every 20 minutes so if you push the envelope up to the restart time you can lose progress. Sorry i thought this info had been passed down to newer players.

At the time i picked 4am PST it was the first hour block that had 0 players playing on the servers for consecutive days.

We killed it on server 1 so we could fight it at the spawn point. So still stay away from the Moder portals until we want to fight kill server 2's Moder. That being said, Bonemass defense mitigates a lot of damage so we could probably do it with a few of us now.

Just be glad that after the server restart you are not stranded on a swamp island without gear to make a portal and your boat is gone. Yes, that has happened

Everything in the mountains was going pretty easy until I ran into a stone golem. Difference in tactics noted. Now for a body run...

Okay. I will be up for Moder killing this weekend.

Anyone have any spare Drake trophies? I want to make the helmet, but those trophies don't drop very frequently.

I've been hosting a Valheim server from my home server so far just 6 people have contributed to it. Would it be useful to open it up to more Goodjers or would it be detrimental to split the community further?

I think the 3 servers out there are enough for now? Servers 1 and 2 seem pretty dead. Haven't seen more than 2 people on them at any given time (unless there are a bunch of west coast folks hopping on later)

I am primarily on Server 2 during the weekend (various times), and possibly 1 or 2 nights a week, but only for an hour or 2 at most.

Cool, I didn't think it would be useful unless people were not getting in regularly due to full servers.

Dude. You've managed to do wonders with the citadel in that amount of time. Just stopped by today and was quite amazed to see the keep and throne room. (apologies if I didn't close doors after myself, it's a bad habit I'm trying to mend).

If anyone borrowed the Porcupine weapon and some lvl 4 wolf armoron server 2 from the main base please return it when you are done.

Ooh, how frustrating to lose those. Hope they come back.

Zarak on Discord shared a link to a reddit post that tells how to add substantial FPS to Valheim.

The tl;dr is that Valheim's fullscreen is shared, not exclusive; that's why you can see other windows in front if it when you alt-tab away. Playing in actual exclusive mode should boost your FPS a fair bit; my 970 is laboring to run it at 1440p, and usually manages to do 30fps or so. With this adjustment, I get about 45fps. If you've got a faster card, this might push you over 60Hz, which can help perceived smoothness a ton.

How to do it: go into Valheim properties in Steam, and add "-window-mode exclusive -screen-fullscreen" to the Launch options at the bottom of the General tab. Then run Valheim in DirectX mode, not Vulkan. You can check that it's exclusive by alt-tabbing away, at which point the screen should vanish, with your desktop popping up, rather than other windows just moving in front.

This doesn't work in Vulkan mode, only DirectX. If you have an AMD card, you might potentially prefer Vulkan to dedicated fullscreen; it may boost your framerate more.

Thanks, I appreciate it! The building stuff is cathartic, bordering on meditative for me and I am currently engaged in building a true dock for my Longship.

On the door thing, you did leave an interior door open on the main entrance bridge, but you did close the exterior door, so no Graylings were trying to jump from the rafters to attack me (ala Pink Panther)

The game saves every 20 minutes so if you push the envelope up to the restart time you can lose progress. Sorry i thought this info had been passed down to newer players.

At the time i picked 4am PST it was the first hour block that had 0 players playing on the servers for consecutive days.

What I was trying to say is that there should be a way to tell the server to shut down gracefully, instead of just shooting it. Yes, we can work around the problems, but you're forcing the server into a failsafe data-recovery mode, which can be risky, depending on how good the software is.

It may just be a matter of sending the server, at least if it's Linux-based, a SIGHUP instead of a SIGKILL. You may need to ask the host if they can create an option for a gentle reboot instead of a hard shutdown.

(For the non-techies: SIGKILL on Linux instantly slaughters a process... the abbreviation means 'signal kill', but the way the kernel works, if root sends a process a KILL signal, it's killed by the kernel itself. It doesn't receive the signal, it instantly dies. A SIGHUP means 'signal hangup', which is an archaism from the dialup days, meaning that the user terminated their session. That's just passed to the program, which can react any way it wishes. A graceful shutdown is one common choice.)

edit: online comments say it needs SIGINT, but a few-weeks-old comment suggests that might not be safe. The official way to shut it down, per the manual, is a control-C in the console, which is obviously no good for a rented server, or for 4AM restarts.

I run my server via Linux Game Server Managers - it does gracefully kill the process for the server when the backup/update/restart command is issued, which initiates a save on stop so nothing is lost.

That said, a crash would obviously result in (up to) 20 minutes loss (or is it 30 mins per save? either way)

But i have my own dedicated hardware, not sure what Hosting companies would use to actually run the server, but I can't imgine Windows being an efficient base OS...

Bit of a result today, accidentally smashed one of those stools next to the small stone structures and a host of additional build options appeared including teleporters.
Quickly set a few up, realised I could also get my workbench up a few levels and am nicely positioned next to a swamp and a mountain.
The second boss is still some distance away though, think I'll check out the swamp and then see if there is a route I can take to get to the boss.

The game allows a save state and creates a backup, but the hosting service doesn't do this before the restart. I'm obviously not logging in to manually do it

For the record the server isn't crashing. It's being forced to restart at a specific time every day. I've only had 2 crashes so far. One on each server..

I think that, in effect, because of the way they're restarting it, you're having a server crash every day. A clean shutdown shouldn't lose data.

Re-posting from discord:

Watched a video about the hoe, and it turns out I was doing things WRONG.

I always pictured the hoe as lowering the ground, but it levels the ground to the height you are standing at. You can see in the center of the circle, a vertical line, and that depth/height of that line varies by your relative difference in height. So if you're standing at the level you want, try to use the hoe from there as far as it will reach.

When digging with a pickaxe through a hill and trying to flatten it, there are three possible outcomes to digging in a straight line:
1) you are too far from the rock wall in front of you, and you dig down instead of digging that wall (fixable with the hoe...it will level things up, remember. )
2) you dig the rock wall at the same exact level you are on (you are at a medium distance to the wall).
3) you dig the rock wall, but the ground beneath you raises a bit, in a way that, if you repeat, you can make a dirt ramp (you are at a close distance to the rock wall).

So by varying how far you are away from the hillside you're trying to dig into, you can experiment and find the right distance to do what you want. You can also easily fix results 1 and 3, with the hoe, by standing at the height you wish the ground in front of you was at, and use the hoe to lower OR raise the ground to that height.

I've found that the hoe's level ground function typically won't lower or raise land further than a single pickaxe "unit". If you're trying to build it up more, use the raise ground feature while holding rocks. If you're trying to lower it more, use the pickaxe.

On a similar note, the mountain biome is a great teacher for how to use a pickaxe. It's pretty easy to make zigzag paths up or down cliffs that are not possible to climb.

To make a path down a cliff: Pickaxe near the edge. Then repeat these - Stand at the edge where you just pickaxed. Turn until parallel with the cliff (right or left... whichever way you want the path to go). Turn outward a bit. Swing pickaxe.

To make a path up a cliff: Pickaxe at the bottom. Then repeat these - Stand where you just pickaxed. Face at a 45 degree angle toward the cliff in the direction you want the path to go. Move close to the cliff. Swing pickaxe.

When you need to switch directions, just turn the other way and keep going. Both techniques can be combined to steer around large obstacles.

Moder is in a huge biome that's surrounded by sheer cliffs for me. There are barely climbable areas that use a lot of running/jumping/stamina, but taking 10-15 minutes to make a path has really saved time going up on silver runs. Down is much simpler, since it's easy to slide without being damaged.

Awesome tips, thanks!

Careful with the mass-landscaping, however. The game 'redraws' land from vanila -> current changes, n the same way it would redraw building a house wall by wall as it renders in. You can even see (in the F2 Debug menu) that the 'instances' count goes skyrocketing up as you dig more land out. Sometimes when I portal back to our heaviest modified area, I can see the outline of where the grass level used to be before being redrawn out of existence - a red-text standing stone always appears at its original height, before eventually dropping down to the new level we made the ground at... all of which has a pretty big impact on performance.

Compare that to other locations where we've made fairly large buildings with a whole raft of farms etc, but very little terraforming, and performance is still grand.

I'm not sure where the tipping point is for performance dropping due to digging out the hillside

Great point! It's funny how it always starts with the map as it originally was and makes all the changes when a section is loaded into memory. Doors and gates must default to closed. When I portal in on top of a sunken crypt I'm raiding, I always hear the gate to the crypt open during the portal animation. Same with gates/doors left open at a house.
