Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

I haven't tried Bowser yet, thought I should finish the main game first. Assumed it was building on suits and mechanics from the main game.

Is that not the case?

Yes insomuchas the cat suit is in it. No insomuchas there's no assumed knowledge from the first one - I've spent more time in Bowser's Fury than 3D World and at no point have been confused.

I’m very tempted to buy it, but I still have the Wii U version, finished it back when it came out. I’m kind of in a funk now where I don’t feel like “learning” any new game’s language, so I’ve really only been playing COD and NBA, but can only bring myself to go for an hour or so at a time. Some new Mario content would be lovely.

I'm in a similar funk. That's, I think, why I'm mostly sticking to 3D platformers these days. They're much simpler overall. I opened up AC: Valhalla the other day and all the systems and information felt overwhelming to me and I just wasn't into it. Not sure why.

After I finish 3D World my next stop will be Bowser's Fury and then maybe I'll finally try Spyro.

Spyro is good sh*t.

In the last week or so I played and finished Spyro 1 and 2 of the remaster. I would be playing 3 if not for our power outage. They’ve been a lot of fun.

Good to know

I haven't read any other reviews of the game yet. I assume that I must be wildly off-base here for liking it, given how little (zero?) attention it's gotten in this thread.

I’m planning on picking it up, but with work how it’s been and my current backlog I can’t justify it yet.

Yeah, you have to remember that 3D World is a port of an 8 year old game for quite a few of us. It's a great game, but I've already played it and talked about it years ago.

There's no way Super Mario 3D World came out eight years ago. The Wii U wasn't even out that long ago.

...was it? :/

Released Nov. 21, 2013.

The Wii U released Nov. 18, 2012.

Skyward Sword HD will be released in time for that game's 10th anniversary. (Nov 18, 2011—as mrtomaytohead has pointed out before, Nintendo loves that Thanksgiving release window.)

f*ck i'm old.

The Wii U was around five years before the Switch launched?! I guess Nintendo really was buoyed by the success of the 3DS.

Yeah, they bailed on the Wii U quicker than any other system (sans Virtual Boy). I wasn’t surprised they made that decision, but it had me kinda shook. Turned out to be a very wise move.

lol, I'm glad somebody noticed my incessant banging of the same drum!

Having a suprisingly good time with Pipe Push Paradise. It's a devilish little puzzler with a cute art style. It's a mix of the classic "pipes" game with a bit of Sokoban block pushing.

I usually hate puzzle games, but this is so charming and interesting.

It's a brain burner, for sure.

There have been a few times when I've been stumped and put the game down for a few weeks, only to come back and have something click.

So, it occurs to me that Bowsers Fury is basically the Death Stranding Edition of Mario.

We have a taciturn hero traversing an open world thats mostly empty, with patches of black goo that monsters jump out of and attack you from and the narrative doesn't make a lick of sense.

I've been playing Bowsers Fury solo and 3D World coop with family but I'm looking forward to getting 3D All Stars. I never really played any of the games in All Stars despite owning 64 on DS and both Galaxy games on Wii. This video made me think I should take 64 more seriously than I have up to this point.

I’ve revisited 64 as part of the All Stars package and it’s fun. I just wish it was a little smoother. It plays like an old game. Otherwise it’s still enjoyable.

I’m on the flower level of 3D World and I have to say at this point that I enjoyed Galaxy and Sunshine far more overall.

3D World is good overall, but I just really dislike when the main thing that makes a level difficult is “the camera is bad”.

Right now I’m on Flower-3 and frankly it’s maddening. Far more so than anything in Sunshine and that has some fiddly controls.

I think the biggest tragedy of 3D World and the New Wii/U Mario games is how inaccessible they are. With the right group of people they are loads of fun. But relatively few people have friends that can play with them. And apparently relatively few of them have the sorts of relationships that are suited to the kind of half cooperative, half competitive multiplayer the games have.

Eh, I always have a ton of fun solo with those games. I’m looking forward to playing them with my daughter in a few years too.

It is really clear that the level design was heavily influenced by co-op.

Hopefully I get a chance to try that mode sometime this year.

3D World "coop" is certainly a challenge with 4 players on screen. I'm playing with my wife, a 9yo, and a 6yo. I need to solo it at some point so I can really experience the game.

Played as a family with my now 9 and 7 (this month) year old. We finished the main game some time last year. Was there frustration due to collisions and picking up other players? Yes. Was the camera ever to be blamed for anything other than the children running too far away and my wife or I getting auto-bubbled 2 steps from a star? More times than I can remember. Was it still fun overall. Yes. It was worth it and we enjoy returning to it occasionally. It really is one of, if not the only, game that allows for couch co-op with family members of all ages that actually works.

I think my favorite about the co-op is when you use the player collision and the ability to carry and throw each other to cheese various platforming bits. It makes me feel like we're actually a team.

I also like the risk/reward of the bubble mechanic. Yeah, if someone's not sure about their ability to make the jump they can put themselves in a bubble. That's mostly an advantage, but it puts extra pressure on the folks who don't bubble because if everyone ends up dead or in a bubble you have to restart the level.

As I type this I realize I have much stronger memories of the New games than I do 3D World. I should rectify that.

I’ve ceased playing 3D World on the crown world for a bit and dug into Bowser’s Fury and I REALLY like it. I wish we had a full game of 3D Mario like this.

Bowser's Fury is definitely a test bed for future Mario games. Nintendo is judging response. Bet money on it.

I’ve let myself get stuck trying to 100% Browsers Fury area and it led me to drop off for a week. I need to get back and just move on. It’s quite fun.

Collected all the cat shines in Bowser’s Fury. That was really fun for an add-on.

How much playtime is Bowser's Fury, would you say? And is it accessible right away, or do you need to finish 3D World proper first?

I'm ballparking ~ 5 hours to roll credits (which happens at 50/100 Cat Shines). Another 4 or 5 to finish it off. It's definitely shorter than your typical Mario outing. The Cat Shines roll in pretty dang quick if you have mediocre platforming skills - it's not super tricky.

And no, you need zero time in 3D World to enjoy it.
