Outriders - Catch All

Is there crossplay?

Never mind saw the OP had the FAQ linked so got the answer. Yes!!

Enjoying the demo so far (itch was scritched). Picked it up on GMG for $47 (code SPR21).

Yeah same here, enjoyed the demo and got on GMG. Fun game

Sooo, I dont think the game makes a great first impression. Painfully generic story and characters. Underwhelming graphics. In my case completely broken lipsynching. The combat is, on one hand I like how fast it is, it keeps you on your toes, it is not a cover shooter like Division. Im enjoying frying dudes as pyro, but the guns themselves just feel very underwhelming to shoot. Both Division and Destiny, which this game is a kind of hybrid of, even the starter guns just felt and sounded satisfying to shoot and that feeling is definitely missing here.

This is very much a cover shooter like division

Probably depends on which class you choose. Devastators don't look like they will be using a lot of cover. Tricksters will use it some but spend much more time dashing around.

I guess pyros have a tank build too

I can't wait until I get home to load this up and play it.

Technomancers, in my limited time, use A LOT of cover.

Yeah I guess I'm judging the game based on one class at early levels, but I was definitely having more success with Pyromancer by getting out of cover and in enemy faces. Plus enemies seem to constantly drive you out of cover anyway. Maybe it's different with the other classes, or possibly cover becomes more crucial as the game progresses.

You have to use cover. Period. No you can't sit in a spot forever. The game makes you move by tossing grenades or you do to use abilities, but you have to use cover or you die. This was very much the case in Division except that they weren't so grenade happy.

I played devastator (the most powerful transformer) , had a bit of fun. I did end up needing to use cover and balance it with being out in the open, which is an interesting thing to sort of grok. The cover could use a bit more smoothness, theres a few too many interstitial cutscenes. I found the boss fights engaging psuedo combat puzzles, and I wasnt too over loaded with loot.

I'm positive on it! Probably will go through it again with the other classes.

It wasn't horrible but there wasn't anything stand out about it either. Comically generic story (that took itself very seriously) and the gameplay felt quite samey. Move through the areas from cover to cover while shooting a large number of dudes who throw a grenade if you loiter in one spot too long, and occasionally rush you with melee types. I wonder how much of the rest of the game follows that formula.

Sounds like Borderlands then. And that is not a bad thing

I was running pretty cold from the beginning of the prologue, with the super-wooden voice acting by my female Outrider, "Narcissa" (hey it was the random name generator) and the tepid dialogue. No, it's unrealistic to expect much in the way of high cinema from looter shooters. To be fair though, I warmed up as the prologue progressed. I appreciated how characters delved into the details of mass emigration from Earth and discussing the thrilling logistics of colonizing this new world. Still why anyone put a douche master villain with a Napolean complex in charge of such a critical mission is beyond me...

Gameplay-wise, things are fine? If you've seen any video of this already, it plays how it looks. It's a real amalgamation of Gears of War, The Division and Destiny. I guess you could throw the older People Can Fly project, Bulletstorm in there, too. Um, none of it is super exciting. I think my interest is really going to hinge on how crazy the gear and weapons get.

I like what I'm seeing in the Trickster class. I'm still trying to figure out why the melee only seems to time freeze people sometimes. Aside from that, freezing fools and either slicing them with a giant time blade or gibbing them with the shotgun is good times.

The gameworld itself is disappointing. Just small arena style areas broken up by awkward loading interruptions like jumping a small gap or climbing a small ledge. This kind of world design feels like a relic of past gen when compared with the likes of Division 2 or Destiny 2. After playing some more tonight Im definitely waiting on a deep discount before I think about a purchase.

Is this thread going to rank as the most negative in GWJ non D&D history?

The DEMO has warts. That's definitive. The developers have said they're exploring options for removing the camera shake (yeah a definite must), toggling motion blur, and high FPS cutscenes.

Is this going to be a genre defining game? No. I think if that's what you were expecting from the DEMO you're up a creek. I'm here for a fun, light, buy-it-once looter shooter with a decent endgame and a sci-fi romp. The DEMO has delivered on all of that. I don't understand the complaints of "generic story". The endless comparisons to Destiny and Division 2 are perhaps warranted by the genre but as someone who has over 1000 hours on two platforms in Division 1&2 and bounced HARD off Destiny not once, not twice, not thrice, but four or five times, I'm here for a well implemented loot/power/story. It doesn't have to be perfect and the writing is not George RR Martin class but what shlooter truly has a good story? Destiny doesn't. Div2 doesn't. I can throw "generic" at those titles too.

Am I biased? Hell yes. I preordered it months ago. Have a soft spot for the campy goofiness of Gears and People Can Fly. Bought into Anthem and loved my time with it. If all people are going to do is jump in here and dump on the FREE DEMO then I guess that's your prerogative. I'm having a lot of fun with the game and am incredibly excited to explore the world, story, character progression, and mechanics.

The FREE DEMO exists to evaluate the game and help you decide to buy it (or not). It's possible the demo isn't selling the game well to me and others and the final release will be better, but the experience was mediocre.

I like it well enough to give the retail version a go when it comes out. It’s certainly trying to mash up a bunch of similar genre games into one which may or may not end up working out.

They need to tone down the grenades though. It’s a bit ridiculous right now.

It's almost like they took one of the bigger complaints of those 2 games and decided to base their game on the more popular Diablo design instead... Go figure.

So far all the areas feel exactly like the Gears of War or Mass Effect trilogy combat design.

Complaints? This literally makes no sense to me, but if you like the archaic structure of this gameworld Im not gonna argue with preference.

Hey staygold, if you are loving the demo then all the power to you. At the start of the month I began gobbling up YouTube videos about Outriders because I was also getting hype. I’ve been looking forward to April. Aside from this the only other releases I’m looking forward to are remasters (Mass Effect and Ninja Gaiden), so it’s been nice to be excited for a new IP.

But... the demo isn’t getting me so hot and bothered. I still haven’t had that much time with it due to having a crap week at work so hopefully give it more of a fair showing this weekend. For example, I quit last night after meeting a mini boss that’s using some kind of powers resistance mechanic that to me is not very readable or fluid. I kind of see what they were shooting for and at the same time thought it was an odd place to try and innovate. It just felt really weird.

I would like to do co op more but the matchmaking system is fraught with long loading screens. And when a host bounces its back to more long loads. This is on PS4 anyway so I’m sure it’s much less of a hassle on PS5.

There are definitely times you need to use your interrupt abilities or the fight will go badly. This is very much blending all sorts of MMOG concepts.

That’s my issue with the constant barrage of grenades. It makes it very difficult to coordinate and keep focus on things when every time someone dies the last thing they do is chuck a grenade.

So far the Breachers (shotgun guys) are the only ones that drop a grenade on death. But yeah, there are A LOT of grenades and they are thrown with inhuman accuracy. The first boss I faced was eve throwing a bunch of lightning grenades. I’m curious if enemies or other factions get different skills to prevent the player from turtling.

So crossplay is supported but it doesn’t seem that cross saves are. At least my PC character was nowhere to be found when I fired this up on the Xbox. Bummer

The grenade spam is one of the reasons I was saying I found myself not staying in cover much and being more aggressive. Its kinda weird, it presents itself as a cover shooter but it absolutely does not want you to get comfortable in cover for more than a few seconds at a time.

Played the Outriders Demo. Not sure if I like it or not. What you can take cover under is very unclear, and when you use a controller (on PC) there is almost 0 aim assist (as compared to Destiny, for example). All of the mobs beyond the mooks are basically bullet sponges.

The gameplay is basically arena - hallway - arena and repeat as required.

Now, that being said, I really liked Gears of War, and this reminds me a lot of that (in the cover mechanics). The story is, well, a looter-shooter story so far, and it is about what I expect out of video games. It was amusing.

I'll probably play more of the demo of the various classes, and try the repeatable missions and whatnot to see about upping my gear and various other things to see if I want to buy it outright, or wait for the eventual Steam sale.

Oh, you actually take cover in this? Not just hide behind stuff? Bleah. I hate cover mechanics in general. That probably means I won't care for this at all.

Demo is free, so I'll still give it a go.

I am pretty sure there are larger open areas in the full game since they showed videos of it along with end game Expeditions. Here is an article about end game stuff

[strangest double post ever]

I don't have preference either way. One of the biggest complaints i've seen leveled at Destiny and Division was their map design and how everyone is tired of how big and open they are. So seeing Outriders be smaller and distinct like Diablo's (archaic or not) maps isn't a surprise.
