Vanity Fair's in depth article on Zack Synder's Justice League. I think this might have moved my needle over to "Watch."

Great piece and helps me see the appeal, then...

Diane Nelson, who was president of DC Entertainment at the time, says she appreciated that Snyder was more into deconstructing the familiar than just recapitulating it. “Zack is a masterful visual storyteller who goes deep on individual characters,” she says. “For some people, that is amazing, and for other people that becomes the problem because they have fixed opinions about who these DC characters are and are not.”

This quote is interesting. Like, I feel like this they did a good job of this in Man of Steel even though I had some issues with the movie. But most of the ones after like BvS aren't like this example at all.

I feel dumb but who did Zack go deeper into? I feel like Superman was a bit angrier but Batman, Wonderwoman, Flash, and Cyborg all felt one dimensional and exactly like their comicbook characters. Luther was different but I wouldn't say deeper. He was just weird.

In Man of Steel I felt they did a good job of Clark understanding that his powers were both amazing and detrimental - shown by the montage of him growing up and staying out of the limelight and the other growing up backstory stuff.

Wow they really nailed the new Superman costume. I think it’s the best one.

Also this is pretty great.

Agreed that the costume looks good. I struggle with the actor's look. I think it's because I can't shake the feeling he looks like Adam Levine or something.

It’s probably because I’ve never actually watched him in anything but he always looks like generic handsome model man instead of a real person to me.

EEEEEEWWWWWW.

Superman & Lois:

It takes a lot to impress me, particularly in regards to something new trying to reimagine something decades old, but this impressed the hell out of me.

I finally caught it, and I quite agree. Not to keep ragging on the guy, but I'm going to keep ragging on the guy, it feels like what Man of Steel wanted to be until Snyder got his dour nu metal sledgehammer aesthetics, childish Randian grievance, and inability to portray any sort of humanity all over it. That opening scene didn't have the beautiful brevity of the first page of All Star Superman, but I think it was about as close as film or TV can get.

Seriously, I am mindboggled about how a new adaptation of one of the oldest franchises in American media within the framework of a decade or so old collection of TV shows can grab me like this.

The Snyder Cut Reactions Are Here, and So's a New Trailer

I will watch it. It will be interesting to see if they can make sense out of the mess.

A few tweet quotes -

I've seen #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague.

Justice is restored.

We can finally talk about #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague and...I loved it. I can't even believe they released the 2017 cut seeing how good this was. I definitely felt the run time a bit but I thought it was some of the best DCEU action and set peices to date. Epic on so many levels!
Ah, seems like the social reaction embargo has lifted for #ZackSnydersJusticeLeague:

It is... Fine. It's very long. There are some things that are much better, and some things that are worse than the previous version.

I have a lot more thoughts about it that share tomorrow.

#ZackSnydersJusticeLeague is a fascinating experiment. Far too long, and full of ideas that just don’t work. And yet, it’s better than expected. Snyder isn’t trying to make a superhero movie here; he’s striving for a LORD OF THE RINGS-style epic.

Probably easy to predict if you liked Snyder’s BvS that this would likely be more of the same dark dour tone.

I’ll check it out because I have HBO Max, but there’s no way I’d pay money to rent or see it in a theater. I’m curious how they will judge whether its a success or not.

Watching it again -

A lot more Darkseid. Mentions of never seeing a being so powerful - except Superman was just a normal Kryptonia wasn't he? So were/are all people from Kyrpton that powerful? They also voiceover "no laterns" and several shots of Green Lanterns - so are they planning on doing another movie to explain them or just ignore them?

I guess this is the problem of not being a DC reader.

Probably not. They're just adding to the shot from the previous movie that had a glimpse of a Lantern fighting alongside 'gods' and dying fighting Steppenwolf

The AV Club review is pretty down on it.

https://film.avclub.com/the-snyder-c...

I scanned a couple of reviews and all of them seem to focus on it being better, but they don't really go into if it's good on its own merits.

FWIW- Sorta. Most Superman origins state that he gets his powers from being a Kryptonian exposed to yellow sun radiation. Krypton had a red sun. So, Kryptonians on Krypton weren’t powerful like Superman but other Kryptonians on Earth would/are be powerful like Superman (i.e. Supergirl).

Darkseid looks ridiculous. He doesn’t look menacing, he looks like he came from Lawnmower Man.

Yup! That is why Zod and his compatriots were at Supes power level, when they came to Earth.

Which seemed dumb for a race that had space faring capabilities. One of them must have stumbled upon a yellow star before this.

Yes. Never did they encounter a yellow sun? That is not plausible. I know they wrote it years and years ago but they need to work a bit to make it more sense.

That's why Smallville made some sense at least. Jor-El had visited Earth before and specifically sent Kal here in that show mythology.

Yeah it comes down to something that wasn’t considered at the time the characters origin was created. Since then, writers have come up with various explanations to explain why the Kryptonians didn’t make use of this in other ways. Some more satisfying than others.

They were still figuring out origin stories in the 1930s.

They also usually make a point of saying it's due to the Earth's yellow sun., though in 80 or 90 or however many years, I'm sure other yellow suns have done the job.

No, no, no, y'all... it was Earth's yellow sun because of the specific color. Not any old yellow would do. Cream? Nope. Chiffon? Nope. Gold? Nuh uh. Chartreuse? No way.

Had to be Earth's Yellow Sun Yellow to power up that Krypton DNA.
