Not midwestern, but there was a reason I carried a warm hat, gloves and coat in the trunk of my old convertible every February.

This idea that door close buttons don't do anything/aren't even hooked up to anything is everywhere, and it may well be true in some cases, but if so it is certainly not universal. When I was first dating my wife she lived in a building with an elevator that would wait a very long time before closing it's doors. You could tell people who frequented the building from those who didn't because those familiar hit the door close button immediately after selecting their floor. there was still a slight delay between pressing the door close button and the door actually closing, but it was definitely triggered by the button.

In an elevator that the user is not familiar with, or that has a more reasonable waiting period before it closes the doors on it's own, I can see how that delay would cause people to believe that pressing the button did nothing, and the elevator closed on it's own shortly after their attempt to close the door with the button.

I have also heard (unconfirmed) that the door close button pressed in conjunction with a floor button will put some elevators into "express mode" where it will go directly to the selected floor without stopping to pick up other passengers.

TLDR; door close buttons work at least sometimes, and probably most of the time.

The way I heard it was the "close door" button is there for when a technician or firefighter has the elevator set for fully manual operation.

Makes me feel just a bit better knowing I am not the only one.

I married one....I love fixing dumb mistakes.

Goes back a ways- I remember in the 80s Rich Hall had a 'sniglet' for when you run the vacuum over something, pick it up, and put it back down again to give the vacuum another try.

Oh man did this make me laugh.

I'm one of the Social Media Marketing Coordinators for a big retailer of tools and hard goods up here in Canada, and the amount of racists post I have to deal with right now, almost always from boomers and yellow vesters, saying we need to "stop supporting CHYNA and buying NORTH MERICA GOODS" is increasing.

The only good thing about those posts is other people chiming in to say "yeah, good luck with that. People don't buy North American made goods because they cost a lot and people are cheap!" or "You do realize that almost everything is made in China, right? Even the parts in that phone/tablet/computer you're ranting on?"

As a Canadian manufacturer, it really irks me how many people in the beer industry profess how much they support Canada and local markets. When it comes to their own breweries, they are either bought directly from China or are Chinese systems sold by a Canadian/American/secretly-owned Chinese company claiming to be Canadian/Dutch/German. I get it, breweries are expensive and risky endeavors with an already flooded marketplace; can't afford Canadian made on the first go. Yet on the much needed expansion, will shop around at the Canadian places but still go Chinese. Support Canadian beers...not the whole industry just us.

/end work rant

That anger is a righteous one.

I thought I was a good person, but the way I intentionally slow down in the left lane (in a car you'd usually expect to be breaking speed limits), just to piss off the person tailgating me, suggests otherwise.

Spoiler:

before you hate on me TOO much, I should point out I only do this in a carpool lane (i.e. there's a reason I'm on the left), and I only do it by virtue of sticking to the speed limit, mainly because my car is a cop magnet and speeding tickets are for chumps.

But boy howdy does it offend some other drivers. Unsurprisingly, always dudes, who seem to expect anyone driving a WRX to be a maximum asshole.

While on the correct side of the law, if people are behind you it is always best (and probably courteous) to just get into the right lane until they pass. That is why the left lane is usually called "the passing lane".
