Splatoon 1 & 2 & 3

I think the question is whether Splatoon 3 is necessary or not. That's what seems odd to me. I guess we'll find out.

I have zero ideas for what could make Splatoon 3 a must buy for me, but I guess that's why I'm not a game designer.

It's necessary to get everyone to shell out $60 again. Also, new iterations offer a clear jumping-on point for people who aren't currently playing.

Why are you guys worried about next month when there's a Splatfest right now?

Go team Unicorn.

I'm wondering if there are other factors that would encourage Nintendo to keep the game on rotation. We saw with the Octo-Expansion that they can just do more single-player levels as DLC, but how much of the base game can be changed for other elements?

This game is pretty big in Japan, and Nintendo frequently throws concerts with their different hologram hosts. Pearl and Marina are the main attraction at the moment, but what if they want to throw in a different pair of musicians? I imagine it sounds easy to just swap 'em out in DLC, but I get the feeling that moving the main story forward, making mechanical adjustments and changes, adding in new musicians, so on and so forth might justify a new game. Splatoon 2 already "expanded the universe" both with Salmon Run and Octo Expansion, and it's possible a third game could do far more with both and then some.

I dunno. I think part of the issue is that Splatoon 2 launched as "Splatoon 1, but with minor additions and changes". A Splatoon 3 could potentially explode, depending on what you wanted to add. We'll have to see either way, but for Nintendo, it probably makes sense to keep making new entries in the franchise, especially since they seemed to transition from Splatoon 1 to Splatoon 2 (and then put out a single-player expansion) in far less time than just about any other multiplayer property they have.

The Splatocalypse has begun. I missed the last few Splatfests but I'll have to log in and watch the stars go out.

And when that's over, I just bought the Octo Expansion during Target's non-Prime-Day sale so...

Yeah I missed that sale. Still need to finish up the single player campaign.

3 day splatfest should be lots of fun

The Gold vs. Silver colors for this splatfest are pretty cool.

And sometimes I forget how good the splatfest music is. It's really good.

Prediction time; When will Splatoon 1 go offline?

I think it'll be a few more years. The only reason the online modes for the Wii and DS went offline was because Gamespy went under. Probably after Splatoon 3 launches.

So they're doing some fun stuff with the music in this splatfest. Yesterday they rolled out a ton of different tracks, including some splatfest tracks from the original Splatoon that I totally forgot about. Today, the only song I heard for about the 90 minutes I played was the Final Boss music from Splatoon 1.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4k1...

I thought it would get tedious after awhile, but since the song (and the boss fight) were so incredibly hype, it made every bout feel like it was amped up and more intense. I'm definitely going to check in each day now to see what else they do.

Arise!

So apparently Nintendo is rolling out a free demo of splatoon 2 next week, and the first splatfest in a year in May.

So this means.....I'm not sure yet. Could be a chance to put Splatoon into people's hands and minds ahead of an announcement for Splatoon 3 (guessing not) or new DLC (maybe). This would be before when E3 would have been, and it's not ridiculous to think they will still do a Direct around then when something could be announced. Or maybe they're just promoting one of their multiplayer games when more people are still at home.

Either way, I may fire up Splatoon 2 for the first time in a year when the splatfest rolls around.

Repeat splatfest is still splatfest. Might be fun.

My son prefers Splatoon 1 for some reason. Maybe a month ago he was playing it daily, getting excited for rank ups.

I wouldn't get speculating yet. The SplatFest still makes it a possibility that this will lead up to an announcement of sorts, but the timing of the free trial is also during Golden Week in Japan, and this seems like the perfect sort of promotion not only for the holiday, but the holiday during a pandemic.

That said, I also wouldn't be surprised if a Splatoon 3 is being worked on and this is just generating some hype before they announce a sequel. I've just gotten used to keeping my hype in check.

I'll finally be able to get to try out Splatoon 2, that's been on my radar for a long time, I just haven't dived in at the £49.99 price point. The expansion sounded really impressive too, maybe they'll do a bundle deal.

But I like speculating!

That said, lining up the free demo with Golden Week is a good point. It hadn’t occurred to me, but it makes total sense now that you mention it.

You are a True Nintendo Fan.

Hey Splatoon 3 it is. Hype now, ccesarano.

Honestly, when it looked more like a spin-off that was open-world post-apocalypse, my hype was at the top. Then when it was "just" another Splatoon, I was saddened.

But that's more on me for expecting some weird open-world post-apocalypse game. I'll wait to see what the campaign looks like, and if they made Salmon Run a bit less of a bonus mode and something far more realized.

What Splatoon 3 will be like is a bit like reading tea leaves. Does your answer say more about you or the game?

It says an awful lot about how gamers can be carried away with expectations set by themselves when there's very little to go by.

So I really ought to know better by now.

If you have a hankering for some odd tidbits of info for Splatoon 3, check out the official tumblr titled Live from Squid Research Lab, which they have started posting to again (it was started back in the days of the original Splatoon). Different city confirmed - Splatsville, which is part of the "Splatlands" area. Combat in non-urban settings, confirmed.

Launching on September 9th. Must've had to switch places with Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The video is just a MP match showing off a number of new weapons and such and then the release date. I really like that one ability that shoots out some beams. It reminds me of my favorite special from the original, the Killer Wail

Both of my boys are taking a run at Splatoon 2 for the first time just now. The oldest is talking about playing for the first time when he gets home from school, so depending on how it goes, this could be a birthday present request, but a day late... And if not, I'm sure the wife will insist on getting it right away. We shall see.

Screw gameplay, show me a video of a functional lobby system, Nintendo.

I watched the video. It sure looks like a Splatoon game. Which is fine, and it's been a few years since I played the last one, but I wonder what sort of changes there will actually be besides new weapons/supers that will make it worth it. At least Splatoon 2 could proudly say it was more polished than the first game, and on a new system.

Also, apparently Splatoon 1 servers are still up and it's still reasonably active. Which makes me wish they would give these games a longer tail of support than they have.

If Splatoon 3 has split-screen, I'm in. It won't of course, but a man can dream

edit: apparently Splatoon 3 WILL have split-screen, thanks to me counter-jinxin' it in my post On my wishlist...

Where are you getting that info? The official game page lists only 1 player for single system.

Seems to be a case of wishful thinking, eagerly copy-pasted to a myriad of fansites. Nothing official, so probably not happening. I wouldn't mind a drop to 30fps or other technical compromises to make it run smoothly on the Switch, as I would be playing with my daughters. But I get why it wouldn't be the developers' focus.

Ey well...

I just noticed the other day when browsing the store apparently I have access to Splatoon 2 DLC now? Part of online+ it seems.

Yup, anyone with the expansion pass has access. Nintendo is slowly building up the expansion pass, but not with anything I don't already have or am interested in.
