The Classic Video Game Players Thread

So very cool. Thanks!

I thought that game was called Hard Drivin'?

Race Drivin' is the sequel to Hard.

And is so very, very good!

The SA-1 Chip is kind of interesting in that it was mostly just an enhanced version of the SNES's main CPU. It has quite a few different enhancements but the most important is probably just that it runs at 3x faster clock speed and it can be used in parallel with the main CPU. Same person did SA-1 versions of Gradius 3 and Super R-Type which are pretty impressive and one for Contra 3 as well ran pretty well unmodified, but it did have a bit of slow down when things got busy.

Could have swore that there was also one called Stunt Drivin' but I can't find anything about it anywhere. I remember trying to play one of them in the arcade when I was 10-12 years old and selecting manual transmission and having no idea how to get it going thanks to the clutch lol. Kind of makes me want to find one of them and try it again since 16 or 17 year old me learned how to drive a manual transmission.

Might you be thinking of Stunt Island?

Longshot... but anybody have any idea how to install the Good Ol' Chessmaster 8000 on windows 10?

Launching setup as xp program doesn't do the trick

I would probably either try Win98 in a VM, or a DOSBOX Win98 install, and install it on one of those.

Thanks. Solved it already. Found it on abandonware, install was a breeze. I can ditch the CD's

Men... what a world we live in. As a kid I helped my father with punch-card when he could book some time at the mainframe of the university. Taperecorders, 5 1⁄4-inch floppies, RS232 cables.. and now I download a CD while my kids stream movies in 4KHD at the same time.

O tempora, O mores

I still deal with RS232 on a regular basis. Sadly still one of the most supported standards in Pro A/V for sending control signals between devices (mostly using captive screw connectors but sometimes still using DB-9). Thankfully more and more devices are supporting HDbaseT (which can embed RS232 commands) or HDMI CEC or even just a simple commands via network connection (I don't even want to think about the security implications of this though as many don't have any user authentication support so I imagine it is only a matter of time until we see botnets built from Blu-ray Players and SmartTVs).

Well don't do THAT.

You are welcome to come and pick them up over here in Sweden.
CV-19 restrictions are pretty mild here and the death-toll seem to be not as severe as in other European countries over here (though you can prove anything with statistics).

So I grabbed the Blizzard Arcade Collection on Xbox Series X and other than a few weird choices I kind of love it. It includes The Lost Vikings (it doesn't appear to include Norse by Norsewest: The Return of the Lost Vikings but I might be wrong), Rock 'n' Roll Racing, and Blackthorne and being able to play these old games on modern hardware is great (though I do own all three of them for SNES).

So for the weird choices first off is where they hid the new options menu on right stick click. They also added a save feature for Lost Vikings and Blackthorne but not for Rock 'n' Roll Racing (passwords still work). Rock 'n' Roll Racing runs full screen, but Blackthorne and Lost Vikings both run in a square window. It makes more sense for Blackthorne than it does for Lost Vikings because Blackthorne works like the original Legend of Zelda where you move from static screen to static screen with no scrolling. With LV using scrolling levels they could have modified the viewport to fill the screen. Also everything is very noticeably dithered. I understand that for the original versions because that is how they were but for the new Definitive editions I kind of expected things to be less dithered, especially because with the scaling they are using (looks like 3x for Blackthorne and 4x for the other two on my 1080p TV) and on sharp modern TVs it is way more in your face than it was on old fuzzy CRTs at 240p (the resolution most SNES games ran at). Lastly there is the name: none of these games were arcade games. They should have just called it the Anniversary Collection or something like that.

After toying with the idea for at least a year now, I just placed an order for an OSSC and SCART cables for my Master System and SNES. It's more than I wanted to pay, but it'll be worth it to play on original hardware again. I also do some casual speedrunning, so that makes the original hardware even more important for me. Unfortunately, the site said shipments could be delayed by up to 6 weeks due to COVID, so I might have a long wait. Oh well, I'll get a nice surprise in the mail when I least expect it.

The wife and I did a little travelling over Spring Break so I got to hit some game stores in southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas. Got to revisit a favorite from the trip in December and picked up three games there and visited a new one called Game World in Nixa, MO (near Springfield) that had probably 8 or 9 games that are on my wish list, but were too expensive for me to get. I did buy one of the more reasonably priced ones there (Metal Marines). Most of the places we visited today were strike outs though. I found a number of games I would have bought except the damn store employees had put stickers over the game labels. These were mostly chain stores (Game-X-Change) which has been good to me in the past, but not this time. I only picked up one game today after visiting five different stores.

I ended up getting Metal Marines and Kirby Super Star off of my wish list and then also got Super Tennis, Lemmings, and Super Baseball 2020 (very disappointed we don't have robots playing baseball for real now) all of which I remember being decent games.

Man, I really liked Metal Marines. I greatly enjoyed launching missiles and such. I guess it presaged Tower Defense games a bit.

At least they had the sense to move it away from the silicon.

Yeah, no damage done there, probably, just loss of save games.

You notice they used bread ties as the wires?

Yea I had forgotten just how persistent the AI is in this game. They launch attacks about every 20 seconds of game time without fail even if they only have a single missile to send your way. Also the way they send you transmissions to gloat or rage at you every couple of attacks is pretty annoying. It does have a nice rock/paper/scissors sort of balance to its attack/defense though. Missile can be countered with AA Missiles, but AA Missiles rarely take out the shuttle they fly the Metal Marines over on so you need gun pods to counter them, but if you plan your landing right and deploy your marines well 3 of them can easily wipe out multiple gun pods and anything else in their way unless there are also marines deployed on defense, but defensive marines are super weak against Missiles so you have to try to have a balance and you have limited resources to work with. I played through the first three levels and it really seems to reward being super aggressive. If you don't take out the enemies ability to attack they will just overwhelm you.

A generation 7 setup. Heck yeah. Pre kids consoles.

So tempted...

Still I think I will just keep hoping for a 2.0 version that ditches the analog outputs and fancy metal case and is $199 like their other consoles.

The other day my brain remembered this PC puzzle game in 5th/6th grade installed on our school computers, Kye. Two seconds later I found an online version. Still a good puzzle game!

With all of this PS3 store going down made me look into the PS3 CMOS battery. What a pain to get at that battery.

Neato, I love games like this. Never heard of it either.

It'd be nice if Sony patched out the need for a handshake (validated time) upon the inevitable PSN server shutdown. For PS3. For PS4. They probably won't. They'd rather we get the latest hardware, at this time a PS5, and subscribe to PS Now. We're beholden to CMOS longevity it seems.

This is making me think I should replace our PS3 CMOS battery, to safeguard prolonged access. That or look into whatever a jailbreak is.

Some randomness brought triplane turmoil into my mind. Started playing it.
Kind of want a better version of it.

That and zoombinis. But watching a video was enough for that.

Too bad that there is a pretty hard cut off with the second half of slims and super slims.

SAGA FRONTIER REMASTERED is on steam.
