Valheim - Valhallall, Meadhallall, Shieldwallall

Group of us took down Bonemass (3rd boss) on the first server tonight. We did a bunch of prep work and had a ton of potions and new gear shined up for the job and it went very smooth.

The loot from that gave us all a Wishbone belt which allowed us to track down silver found in the mountains. We then proceeded to start up a new silver rush and filled up a cart with it. So a very productive night!

Also not long after that one of the raid events kicked off 'the smell of sulfur is in the air' (first time that I know of on the server)

It was a raid of about 10 Surtlings which drops the cores that everyone wants. So if you see the notice pop up, head on over to the red mark on the map for some free cores!

I haven't actually seen a Surtling yet. Probably not ready, I still scamper from trolls. But if they raid on Server 2, I'll be happy to help fight and loot

We got to the second boss yesterday. That was a trial. Just getting there was a trek. Then the fight was significantly tougher then the first one. Been exploring the next biome. It's awful in a fun way. A fun challenge.

I love that fighting single trolls is terrifying but fun. I did get hit once with his tree trunk or a rock (no idea, I was running away at the time) and that took me from 70hp to 20hp or something...which was very...inspiring. I kept more distance, and ran him into more terrain (big boulders or tree groupings he'd get stuck on).

All in all, I would much rather be in Valheim than teaching online classes...sigh.

If you're playing solo on your own server, do the bosses scale? Or do you need others to help take them down?

They seem to scale so you should be good on your own

Yes, they scale. The five boss fights were challenging solo, but not super difficult - I was prepped for each and completed each on the first try (and had to do Bonemass twice due to a game crash right after the fight). IMO Bonemass is the most difficult.

Well, I joined the crowd and started putzing around last night. Fairly steep learning curve for me as I've never really played a survival game before (dabbled in some Terrarria, but that's about it). Are there any good getting started guides, or should I just muddle through for a bit?

Welcome!

Here's a pretty good beginner's guide. It gets a bit spoilery near the end (describing in some vague detail about the first boss, and some of the things you can do after killing the first boss), so decide for yourself how far you want to watch before getting there in your own game. This youtuber has a pretty good set of helpful tutorial style videos, but they'll each get progressively further into the game.

I am looking for a GWJ server by typing "#GWJ" underneath the select server tab but nothing is listed. Am I doing something wrong?

The server list stuff seems pretty wonky at times. I have a server up that I’m hosting remotely, and searching for it always finds it instantly for me. For everyone else, the search either takes a long time or never shows it, and they have to join through someone playing. We hoped the join by IP option would be a fix, and for some people it worked great. Others couldn’t join at all that way.

I was able to find one of the servers via Steam but not in-game. All good!

What's the etiquette/advice for a low level player joining a server? I was able to join a server and see lots of homes have been built. Do I just put down roots that way? Also, just in general, given the amount of running involved in this game, is there any guidance on good places to settle down?

You can do what you want to be honest, build your house/settlement how and where you prefer. If you like to have others around, close to the community center is the best place (if you are playing in our servers), if not, find a place in the Meadows, is the best place to settle.

FYI, was the last one on server 2 tonight. Just smelting some ore, planting some carrots, putting items away in their correct chests... then it says, "A FOUL SMELL FROM THE SWAMP" and the screen starts shaking. I'm like NOPE! Logging off. So... anyone hopping in there, expect some unpleasant company. Last time it was 3 trolls visiting the base.

The events are timed. So it will end after a while. Bosses though stay in place till they die and will aggro and attack anything within range.

Sent a friend request toRanalin in Steam looking for an invite to his server and Discord.

Couldn't find the server tonight...either via "GWJ" search or join by IP Address.... I guess I will need to wait for a friend to be on the server before I can join the friend via Steam overlay....

Almost all of the recent patches have had to do with the server list, That part seems to not be going well. I was able to host dedicated today for my group. 2 could find it via the browser, the other had to join by IP. Really odd. They need to take a good hard look at that system.

Go to Steam >> View >> Servers Select Favorites tab Add a server put in the IP and port;
51.81.152.136:3957
save it
Server Name: #GWJstanRag
pwd: stanGWJ

You can do the same for 2nd server
#GWJstanRag2 IP 51.81.152.139:4157

The time you posted in discord is very close to the server restart...

They have added an IP:Port text box to the server browser in-game. Sadly, the search times out around 5000 servers. Obviously with 2M+ sales, there are an awful lot more than 5000 servers.

They *really* need to add a favourites, or recently played tab to the in-game browser, or, as Ark does, just read the Favourites from the Steam Server Favourites...

What ranalin said, with one exception: you probably want to settle near the ocean. As you progress you'll actually be sailing more than running, and being able to pull right up to your production facilities with a load of ore saves a lot of time.

I just select my player in the game interface, then instead of Start Game, I go to my Steam Server Favorites list and hit Connect. Pops me right in, no muss, no fuss, no searchimus.

What I've been doing is connecting from the server list: click the server, click connect, and give it the password. Valheim starts, choose your character and click Start, and then it prompts you a second time for the password. Voila, you're in.

The two-passwords thing is a little silly, but it works.

Another method is to right click on Valheim in Steam > Properties

In General under Launch Options enter +connect "IP:PORT" for example +connect "51.81.152.139:4157"

When you start Valheim it will go directly to that server after you choose your character.

So after learning that you have to take the serpent to shore to be able to collect it's sales i went and tracked another one down to do just that and now have this awesome looking shield!

Dude! I want one. Any tips on how to find sea serpents? I've seen a couple but they are quite rare.

@Dakhath I had that one happen to me yesterday and they took out part of the main bridge coming into my Citadel as well as part of the front stake wall and my two-tiered watchtower in the process. Thankfully the moat kept them from getting into the camp itself. I put some arrows into them, but they finally gave up and ran off. I have since widened part of the moat and put up sharp stakes to help put some damage into them or other raiding parties.

As a side note, I did put a stake wall with a half door around the portal that is coming to my Citadel, as someone had mentioned that there were some baddies attempting to damage the portal earlier.

Regarding sea serpents (which I have yet to encounter; I'm a hydrophobic Viking):

Would it make sense to carve out a shallow inlet from the ocean, and lead a sea serpent in there for the kill?

Where they spawn is random. They seem to most likely spawn right at the edge of the Ocean and one of the land biomes.

Remember that story i told about the creature where we found barnacles at the start of this thread? Come to find out the chitin that comes from creature is used to make a harpoon. Takes 30 chitin. That is also a random occurrence that can show up anywhere in the water.

Once you have the harpoon you can go sailing about to find a serpent. When you find one, you harpoon it and then head to the closest shore. When you have something harpooned it drains your stamina. Make sure you buff it with Turnip Stew, Queen's Jam, Carrot Soup. Fish if you're lucky.

When on shore you can swap to a 1h weapon while still keeping it harpooned and start hitting till it's dead. If you're about to run out of stamina i recommend just moving as far inland as possible and when it breaks take a beat to get some stamina back to either harpoon it again and or finish it off.
