NFL 2021: The offseason and draft thread

Right on cue, PFT drops its own list of what it calls committed QB relations for next season and the one after. PFT lists eight:

Bills, Ravens, Bengals, Chiefs, Chargers, Buccaneers, Cardinals and Titans

Florio specifically doesn't count the Browns bc Mayfield might regress in 2021; or the Rams (bc the Stafford deal isn't official); or the Lions (ditto).

So, question; does Andy Reid ever coach another game? Just catching up on the story of Britt Reid's accident, and hadn't realized the accident happened so close to the Chiefs facility, and there are clearly some unpleasant implications there. If the NFL's investigation reveals Britt Reid was drinking at the facility that night or even had a history of doing so there or at team events, it's going to be a PR nightmare and I'd have to think the hammer falls pretty painfully on KC.

I doubt this impedes Andy Reid's career even a little bit.

His other kid was abusing drugs during his stint with the Eagles. Sometimes at the facility. I forget where he overdosed exactly but this unfortunately seems to be an ongoing issue with his kids.

Is this how Eric Bieniemy gets his HC gig? Sliding in after Reid peaces out?

Yeah, maybe I'm being dramatic, but there's clearly a difference between hurting yourself like kid #1 tragically did and abusing a substance and at minimum putting a five-year-old girl in a coma for a week. If this investigation shows Reid was aware his kid was drinking at the facility and then driving, Reid's done. I mean, he's done, and I could see the scythe just cutting through anyone potentially responsible, and that could mean other coaches, a GM, who knows. Let's face it--in the end, the NFL is fundamentally a PR firm that happens to involve football and "one of our current premier teams enabled a drunk to kill a five-year-old" is nightmarish on a number of levels.

If Britt Reid runs into a tree, it's a tragedy. If Britt Reid kills a little girl and members of the Chiefs organization clearly knew it was a possibility based on past behavior and didn't stop it, it's a whole different kind of problem.

The Jags hired Charlie Strong as assistant head coach / inside linebackers coach.

This is his first job in the NFL, a well earned position after... *checks notes*... tanking Texas and USF.

But he was in Alabama last year as a "defensive analyst", which is totally a real position with super important responsibilities guys, seriously.

Agree with that. This could lead to Reid retiring to focus on his family issues.

You didn't mention how the new strength and conditioning coach, Chris Doyle, is a racist and had been booted by previous programs.

Pretty sure it was at training camp. Yep: https://www.espn.com/nfl/trainingcam...

I remember reading a week or so ago about the ex-Japanese PM who runs Tokyo 202(x) adamantly refusing to step down after a half-hearted apology for some sexist comments about women. He was crystal clear he wouldn't be resigning. When I read that, my immediate thought was, "Oh-ho! Fatal last words!" Today (or yesterday, it's pandemic) he's resigning.

Want to know why I am not as hopeful the NFL will take action?

Tyreek Hill
Ray Rice
Greg Hardy
Antonio Brown
Adrian Peterson
Santonio Holmes
Kareem Hunt
Etc., etc., etc.,...

And, just TODAY in NFL news, Urban Meyer is hiring the guy from Iowa whose Black players said he used racist language and treated them differently because of their race.

NFL isn't doing jack sh*t here.

JJ Watt is free!

Can we sign JJ Watt and do that Watson for OBJ, Baker, and our No. 2 I was talking up earlier?

Obligatory:

"We're the worst franchise ever in the history of the AFC South!"
--Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Hold my beer."
--Houston Texans

JJ Watt is looking for a job as "STEM Quality and Curriculum Administrator"? (that link goes to Indeed)

He's a hard working guy and after some earlier struggles, and definite catching up to do in the field, I'm sure he'll be a huge asset to the team.

Flipping tractor tires and making big ropes do waves just doesn't pay like it used to.

Deshaun Watson apparently "intrigued" by the possibility of going to Denver or San Francisco.

The thing with Watson is that, because he has a no-trade clause, he controls his destination. Obviously the trade partner is going to have to give Houston enough to make the move, but it won't necessarily be the highest potential bidder that can actually land the trade.

I'm guessing that, since JJ Watt successfully forced his release, the likelihood that Houston tries to deny Watson the ability to leave seems lessened.

Come on Nick Caserio, you know you want your boy Jimmy. He's healthy I promise. Jimmy plus two 1sts and a 3rd.

Meanwhile, Joe Brady (aka the guy who tried to trade up to a HC job but failed much like his hand-picked QB this season) is at Trevor Lawrence's pro day.

That suggests either (a) the Panthers will try to trade up to the No 1 slot, or (b) the Jags and everyone else ahead of Carolina will forget to draft Lawrence.

Charlie Strong, one of only two college football coaches that Sonny Dykes beat more than once (2-0) during his 4-year tenure at Cal.

Everyone's got to take a look to at least consider what their trade-up offer would be.

You never know. Any top QB could decide to pull an Elway/Eli and refuse to play for the team with the top pick. Maybe if the team did something the player found unacceptable, like, oh I don't know, hiring a racist POS to be their strength coach.

Oops. And no one more qualified than me apply for that job.

Real link.

I will never get tired of you dropping Cal Facts into these threads.

The good news for you; Doyle is one of those college coaches who has insulted and abused players for years, and I suspect that, without the power disparity you have between college coach and college athlete, he's not long for the NFL. It's like Nick Saban realizing he can't just bully everybody into submission and running back to college; Doyle pushed workouts so hard at Iowa he put 13 athletes into the hospital. With grown adults and a CBA, he's not going to make it long in the NFL.

Agreed. Love the Nick Saban callback. The stories about that guy in MIA.

The Fritz Pollard Alliance has spoken up and called the Jags' hiring of Doyle "unacceptable".

You know, I've never much liked Urban Meyer, though as someone that doesn't follow college football closely (aside from draft prospect cut-ups), I don't fully remember why. But his "I've known Doyle for 20 years, he's vetted by me" crap has given me a solid reason to dislike him.

This is the same franchise that the player's union basically warned free agents away from due to Coughlin. Amazing that they dive head-first into creating another situation for outside entities to condemn the team over.

How is it that Trent Baalke has slid to like 5th on my list of things I'm pissed about? In fact, at this rate, I'm going to be cheering for Baalke to oust Meyer and staff as unceremoniously as he did Harbaugh.

Oh speaking of Coughlin and the NFLPA letter, Secret Base just did a "Collapse" video on the Jaguars that includes it:
