Kellen Winslow drove a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R 750

Well, most teams would rather let such a player rot on their reserve non-football-injury list (where they don''t have to pay him but retain his rights) instead of cut him loose and face the potential of him breaking out on someone else''s roster 2 years down the line.

As long as he cannot play as a result of these injuries, the Browns can keep him on the non-football-injury reserve. Anytime a player is put on that list before the 6th game of the season, he does not accrue a season towards free agency. He remains ""under contract"".

The Browns can, and should, stick him on that list, and let him conduct his rehab away from the team. So long as he''s on that list, they neither have to pay his salary, nor does he take up a roster spot. There''s really no downside - they''ll just essentially tell him, ""come back next year"", and send him on his way. Next year, they can assess him, and if he still can''t physically come participate in camp, they put him right back on the list again. If he can physically perform, then they can bring him into camp and decide what they want to do with him then.

If they release him, however, you can count on him landing in another city (see Oakland, CA), getting put on THEIR non-football-injury list, and then THEY bring him into camp 1-2 years later and see if he''s worth salvaging.

I didnt realize that... Does he still count against the cap?

His signing bonus would, if they were to choose not to try and recoup that money.

However, it would be the exact same situation if they released him.

Signing bonus is guaranteed, and neither release nor injury nor death can take that off the cap - only the player forefiting the bonus money back to the team will accomplish that. Which is exactly why teams have started to use language as that found in Winslow''s contract.

If they get his bonus money back, then they will have that off the cap. If they do not pay him a salary for this season (either through releasing him, or putting him on the non-football-injury reserve), then his scheduled salary money would no longer count against the cap either. Since he would not be on the active roster, if he had roster bonuses that he could achieve this season (not sure if that''s the case), then he would fail to achieve those, and so that money would not be paid or counted against the cap either. And naturally, he won''t be on the field, so any incentives in his contract would not be attained either.

I see - then I take my earlier comments back - Evil Knievel can sit and rot on the bench.

Not even on the bench. As someone not on the roster, he would neither dress (or even stand on the sidelines) for games nor attend practices. He would, as I understand it, probably not step foot in a team facility until next year.... unless they want him to workout and rehab at the team facilities with the team doctors and trainers. I would imagine this to not be the case. If I were running the team, he wouldn''t be coming to the team facilities. Since he and the rest of the U of Miami brotherhood love nothing more than to break away from their teams and workout with each other in Miami, I''d give him his wish - let his ass go rehab in Miami and stay away from the Browns until we call you.

Sadly, no one has yet seen fit to let me run the front office of an NFL franchise.

Well, he''s out.

Winslow walked out of the Cleveland Clinic on metal crutches, putting no weight on his right leg. He wore a Cleveland Browns T-shirt and sweat pants. He smiled and gave a thumbs up. When asked how he was feeling, he said ""good."" Winslow left in a sport utility vehicle.

Winslow, the team''s top pick in the 2004 draft, issued a statement through the Browns thanking his family, friends, fans, the club and the clinic.

""I am determined more than ever to get back on the field with my coaches and teammates as soon as possible,"" Winslow said in a statement. ""I''m OK and excited to be going home. I would like to thank everyone in advance for respecting my privacy as I recover.""

That''s right, respect the Chosen One''s privacy! The Soulja is injured!

Heh. As Rich Eisen on NFL Network noted, his stay in the hospital was 1 day longer than his stay on the Browns'' active roster last season.

Who pays for his rehab during the year? Since he''s under contract with a team do they handle all the medical and rehab payments?

The Browns can choose to but they in no way have to, specifically because his injury is non-football-related. They don''t have to do anything.

Winslow''s rehab will be paid for by Daddy''s money, I would guess.

I really love that he is hurt, sorry to anyone who likes him. I have hated him since he cried and did his ""I''m a soldier"" rant after TN smacked him in the mouth in college. I hope he is never the same.

Maybe!

Dont these people have handlers that advise them against this STUPID CRAP?

Let this guy go pack groceries for 5 years then come back to the NFL. Maybe he will appreciate his god given talent and the fact that 99% of guys his age are envious of him.

Man down!
