Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

Spoiler:

Better watch out for spoilers about [checks notes] a Super Mario game that's 7.5 years old.

You joke, but the Wii U really was a lost generation - I'd never even heard of this game before this rerelease.

It's a Mario game! What is there to spoil?

Bowser steals or kidnaps something, so Mario plus or minus some companions sets out on a journey across a grass world, a desert world, a water world, a pipe world, a lava world, and some spooky ghost houses until he reaches the big castle where he drops Bowser into a pit of lava. There's no plot to spoil; no ongoing lore that could be upended; no unexpected locations or items or anything like that.

Granted, I don't completely understand spoilerphobia anyway, but... Ducking "spoilers" for a Mario game seems like the height of absurdity.

What if there are different mushrooms, Clocky?

You cad!

Spoiler:

Bowser is a reptile, which is completely different from being a mere lizard!

All truth, I'm with Clock on this one. Any "interesting" gameplay twists are basically right there in the trailers. Though I'd be curious to know what someone would consider a spoiler that hasn't already been revealed in advertisements.

What's a cad?

And how is it distinct from a bounder?

I may or may not have only known the first half of that definition.

I also may find myself using the term reprobate more often. It's fun to say.

It fits, if you listen to my wife’s side of things.

Oh, I assumed based on my search that it had a slang meaning. Probably from Japan.

いいえ。

Well anyway I was going to resurrect the 7 year old Mario 3D World thread tonight. But it looks like there wasn't one and everyone just talked in the Wii U thread. So I guess we can do that again.

Pre-loaded and ready for some fun at midnight.

I will likely pick it up 3D World sometime soon as well. It's one of the only noteworthy Wii U games I missed, and Bowser's Fury sounds like something worth checking out, even if it is only a few hours of additional content.

It's a shame to read about performance issues in handheld mode, but those will be remedied when the Switch Pro is definitely released later this year.

Didn't see any reviews yet. But wife and I played through world 1 up to the castle together. On the TV everything was buttery smooth.

We didn't actually kill each other yet. Technically she jumped off the river when I was trying to turn while we were copiloting that dino thing. Had to talk to each other a bit more to do that level correctly.

Lots of fun. My wife loved climbing walls as cat Peach.

Looks like we are finally done with Wii U "must haves" that haven't been ported over to the Switch, yeah? What's left... maybe Xenoblade X?

Your lips to God's ears.

Xenoblade Chronicles X, Star Fox Zero, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, NES Remix 1 and 2, Paper Mario Color Splash and Yoshi's Woolly World. The rest from lists I've seen have some heavy gamepad features or are third parties that may or may not ever get ported.

The Wind Waker remake.

Paper Mario Color Splash and Star Fox Zero both make heavy use of the game pad.

This is a new one to me.

I'd love to see them do a port of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water that's just one package instead of episodes. I think that game was an utter failure, though, and evidently a weaker entry in the series, so I have doubts we'd ever see it.

Whether any of these are considered "must-haves", however...

Wait, wrong thread. None of these are game you can play right now.

Well, you could on Wii U, but why would you want to?

To paraphase your quote in my sig, "you've never known true joy until you've jerked off an anthropomorphic representation of the weather"

I assume the Zelda remakes are coming with Zelda 35 later this year.

Just had to finish Mario 35 first with this release.

I bought Super Mario 3D World last night, despite playing through it (not 100%) on the WiiU. I fired it up last night and jumped straight into Bowser's Fury for about 30 minutes before bed, and I think I love it. The camera didn't feel quite right until I bumped the sensitivity up from the default "Low" to "Normal", and I might even bump it to "High" the next time I play.

Some gameplay and story spoilers from the first ~30 minutes of play:

Spoiler:

It's Super Mario 3D World gameplay mechanics (including the Cat suit), but with a story stolen right out of Super Mario Sunshine. It's a CROSSOVER game! I love it! Bowser seems to have been infected by the black goo from Sunshine, causing him to gain some sort of berserk rage, and Mario is tasked (by Bowser Jr., who floats alongside Mario, helping Mario defeat some enemies, collect coins, etc) to rescue Bowser. You do this by collecting Cat Shines to light up a lighthouse, which Bowser seems to recoil from.

So far, it's playing like an open world style game. There are distinct "levels", which each contain some number of Cat Shines (a la Sunshine), but you can literally just walk from one level to the next and it seamlessly switches you over. There are no lives that I can see; the one time I died I lost 50 (of my 55) coins. And you can accumulate many powerups in a storage bank, and can switch between them seemingly at any time. It definitely feels like they've removed a lot of the historical drudgery associated with many Mario games of the past, and just left behind the really fun bits.

I haven't read any other reviews of the game yet. I assume that I must be wildly off-base here for liking it, given how little (zero?) attention it's gotten in this thread.

I think it has less to do with the game's quality and more to do with whether anyone wants to purchase a game they already played. Often I like to purchase additional copies of games I own on different platforms in a feeble attempt at preservation, but Nintendo tends to make that tough with their pricing and meager discounts.

From the sound of it, Bowser's Fury seems to combine elements of Sunshine, 3D World, Odyssey, and even Super Mario Bros. 3 into one package, and I imagine a lot of folks here would love that. But would they love paying $60 for it? If you've played the rest of the game on WiiU, then it is unlikely you're eager to drop that cash again.

Yeah, you have to remember that 3D World is a port of an 8 year old game for quite a few of us. It's a great game, but I've already played it and talked about it years ago.

I didn’t mention Bowser’s Fury, because I’m playing through 3D World for the first time.

Both games are hitting it hard for me (I didn't have a Wii U). 3D World is shaping up to be a family multiplayer game, while Bowser's Fury is the single-player romp (yeah, I realize you can have a second player hop into it) -the open world structure is very inviting to hop into for 10 minutes, or blast through for a full hour.

I haven't tried Bowser yet, thought I should finish the main game first. Assumed it was building on suits and mechanics from the main game.

Is that not the case?
