The Elder Scrolls Online Catch-All

I've tried 3 or 4 times to get into this on PS4 but usually bounced pretty hard after a week or so. Something about the classes never really drew me in...templar felt too generic, DK was just kind of odd and the corpse mechanic on necro was so janky I gave up. But I recently picked up all expansions/DLCs/whatever on Stadia for $25, started a magicka NB and something finally clicked. Really looking forward to pvping at level 50.

ESO plus has a free trial this week and I believe the mid year event is coming next week, in case anyone wants to jump back in.

Janky how? That tree is a cornerstone regardless of what direction you go. Tank, DPS, Heal.

The spells feel off. Maybe its Stadia + PS4 controller causing a bit of input lag or something, I don't know. Necro spells just felt kinda disconnected compared to NB or DK.

Also loving the short dungeon runs. 10 minutes from start to finish rocks.

Midyear Mayhem started yesterday and goes til the 9th. Double XP for pvp kills and I think alliance points, along with pet/cosmetic unlocks. I'm still low level and learned the hard way how much sub 50 pvp can suck...kitted out werewolves everywhere. Still having a blast though.

ESO trailers are always excellent (if little to do with actual game play). They just makes me wish they would sign a deal with Netflix to make a series.

I fired this up again for the first time in a long while and...man, combat feels awful.

So, instead, I went and did some more stealing. Still my favorite ESO activity. Combat felt even less substantial than Skyrim, which is crazy to me.

As much as I love Elder Scrolls, I think Fallout would make a better TV show.

Good thing that's on the way too

I would love for it to be a gritty comedy. Please don't try and make a serious drama/fantasy out of Fallout.

It's my 2nd favorite MMO combat after BDO. I have 0 interest in going back to the standard WoW global cooldown bullsh*t.

BD is easily my favorite, but I find that the melee here lacks impact. I love how they do the UI and never liked Wow's combat, but everything combat encounter last night sloppy, weightless and otherwise bad.

I put 50 hours into Skyrim last summer and somehow prefer the feel of it to ESO (despite Skyrim not feeling amazing).

I never did play this game for the combat, it was all about crafting and stealing. I should probably go back to that.

At least ESO combat has more to it than pointless blocking, light attack and heavy attack.

For sure, though I guess what I'm really saying is:

I don't play Bethesda or Elder Scrolls games for their (melee) combat. Even ESO.

Have you tried one of the magic classes? Sorc and necro are some of the most fun ranged classes I’ve tried, though I like WOW and GW 2 melee classes more. I just lack a good group to do stuff with right now.

I’m debating if I get back in. Never finished the Skyrim expansion so wondering if the story is worth completing.

I rolled up a Necro the other day, actually. First time with the class and it didn't stick.

It's all good, it's just me, I'm not disparaging the game. It's still got SOOOO much to explore and see, it's a shame I'm not into the combat more.

I always thought the combat was hot garbage. But isn’t that true of all MMOs?

I love ESO just to exist in and explore the world. I’ve tried FO76 and the only thing I appreciate about it is the combat is near identical to FO4. I wish ESO combat was “real time” like Skyrim. I’d would throw so much money at them.

On second thought, maybe it’s better the way it is

MMOs from Asia (like Black Desert) are hella good. They've managed to move away from timers and such and move into real time combo systems. It's almost like a real game!

(Wildstar was the only WoW-like game I ever liked the combat in. Shame about everything else.)

Yea very much a shame. It also had the best dungeons imo as well. I'm actually playing DnD with one of their old devs. I need to ask for more stories.

As for combat i'm hoping for at some point we end up with a MMO that has the combat system similar to Chivalry or For Honor.

Wildstars housing was a ton of fun as well.

I don't understand this comment, can you elaborate? How is ESO combat NOT "real time"? There's no turns, most of the abilities don't even have cooldowns..

Have you played both Skyrim and ESO? If so, you'd know what I mean. ESO is very MMO in that it is turn-based while pretending it is real-time. Enemies track and hit you regardless of distance and there are very clear dice rolls taking place.

I get where you're coming from in that the latency can definitely be felt in that MMO-everything-is-server-authoritative kind way, but I have to disagree on the term "turn-based". A game is turn-based when players take turns; ESO happens in real-time. I could see an argument that server ticks count as turns, but I think that's broadening the definition to a degree that's not really useful.

I agree - ESO is more action based combat. Not as much as BDO but definitely above WoW/FF14 turn based.

Just got back into this; I played a good bit on PS4, but never had much fun. Started a new character on PC - a Dark Elf Necromancer in Greymoor - and I'm really enjoying it so far! It's nicer on the PC, too -- blame the big widescreen monitor and fast loading times, I suppose.

I have played both, of course, extensively. I understand what you mean now, but that has nothing to do with "turn based".

Agreed. Poor phrasing on my part. Turn-based of course is each side takes a turn one at a time.

I'm not sure what to call it but it is definitely not fully real-time like an action game. In fact, I quit Dragon Age: Inquisition because I hated its combat and thought it was too MMO for a single-player experience.

I think what you are looking for is "deterministic". It's only partially so, in that there's a loose precision. But, if you swing your sword at an enemy in ESO and you are close enough, you will hit them. You can block attacks in ESO through physical action, timing is important in a lot of cases, etc..

I'm more into archery than melee combat and in that i found ESO to be lacking compared to Skyrim. ESO archery seemed weak and ...hmmm i am not sure how to describe it, funky? I felt like I was slowly throwing a small wooden stick underhand to enemies, while in Skyrim it was deadly (for me and my enemies)
