I'm about half way through and i'm really enjoying it. Very descriptive about force abilities and ideology.

I've heard High Republic described as the Jedi dealing with a Star Trek problem, what with the big event being a disaster rather than a war. I think that sounds like a refreshing way to go, if that's in fact what they're doing.

well being only half way through, it feels like maybe it's a disaster but not an accident. Theres something fishy going on. it's pretty captivating so far, and the characterization is good and interesting, if a bit purple sometime

There is plenty of problem solving in this space fantasy, yes.

They literally did this in the last season of Star Trek Discovery.

Alex Kurtzman?

Jim Hoft?

Can someone clear something up for me? I thought Stormtroopers were supposed to be an elite force of troops fanatically loyal to Vader and the Emperor? Given that, there must be standard infantry troops who would be more common than Stormtroopers. For a US military comparison it would be like the Rangers compared to regular Army infantry.

So does Star Wars overuse the Stormtrooper? Or is the Stormtrooper the "regular" troop type?

They way over use them in the movies.

Where did you get the impression they were elite? Since the first movie, they've been shown to be the primary combat infantry for the Empire. Also goes for the clone troopers in the prequel era. Some are geared for different terrain and conditions, but masked and armored is the standard. Seemingly only officers get the privilege of going without armor.

I was always under the impression that the Stormtroopers were the grunts. Basically, the clone army from the Clone Wars gradually replaced with conscripts in a similar role.

The 501st were an elite unit of stormtroopers directly under Vader's command, stormtroopers in general are just grunts.

From Wookiepedia:

Stormtroopers, nicknamed "bucketheads" and—after the Battle of Endor—Remnant Stormtroopers, were the elite shock troops of the Galactic Empire. As members of the Stormtrooper Corps, an independent branch that operated under the Imperial Army, they served as frontline assault forces and formed the backbone of the Imperial Military.

So that is contradictory. You can't be elite while still forming the backbone of something.

Psst... it's almost like most writers are writers and not experts in military terminology and logistics.

If you want an in-universe explanation for the contradiction, it's Imperial propaganda. Oh, we're the Empire, ALL of our dudes are elite.

Sure you can. The backbone is what makes something work, not necessarily the most common part of it. Imperial Army Troopers were the most common soldiers, we just see stormtroopers far more because of the stories we see. Troopers were primarily used to maintain bases and planets under Empire control. Stormtroopers were what the Empire used to fight the Rebellion.

It was probably in the old Legends canon but I seem to recall reading that the Empire didn’t spend very much effort training Stormtroopers and instead believed their “skeletal” armor and sheer numbers would both demoralize and overwhelm an enemy force.

I always liked that explanation for my head canon.

Yeah, they started as an uneven visual analogy to a fascist army and kind of went wherever the next piece of media took them. I think the only real threads of consistency are that they are imperial, well armoured but poorly protected, numerous, and generally quite bad at their job (aside from being numerous).

“...too accurate for sand people...”

There’s another video showing that clip then comparing stormtroopers’ marksmanship versus the tusken raider shots in Episode I hitting the podracers but I couldn’t find that one.

Neat little video. The Toys R Us guy being interviewed in the beginning was spot frickin on. Some cool b-roll of the toys and the like (b-roll is correct term, yes?).

Looks fun. Not bogged down by the Skywalker storylines.

Yeah! Like that time when Luke shows up and takes Baby Yoda away from Papa Mando. That SUCKED!

The Genndy Tartakovsky shorts and the ewok movies are now on Disney+ under the heading "Star Wars Vintage."

Rumor is that there will be a leap in time for the next season of The Mandalorian. Does that mean that we could see the continued adventures of Mando and a young adult Grogu?
