Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

Lately I've been playing New Super Lucky's Tale on my Xbox, but it was originally made for the Switch and would feel very at-home on a Nintendo platform. I definitely feel like the people who dig Nintendo games would also dig New Super Lucky's Tale.

NSLT is a bit of an odd duck: it's a remake of Super Lucky's Tale, which was an Xbox One console exclusive published by Microsoft. I played a bit of it, and I was charmed by the art but not impressed by the gameplay. New Super Lucky's Tale rebuilds that game with refined level design and full camera control, and it's a much better game as a result.

It's a 3D platformer that also dips into 2D platforming, auto-running, and sokoban puzzles at times. It's a bit on the easy side but is still fun. I'd put it at about the same level of challenge and charm as the first run through Super Mario 3D Land, for those of you who played that.

New Super Lucky's Tale is currently on sale for $28, which sounds like a fair price. There's a demo if you want to take it for a spin.

I finished New Super Lucy's Tale last night. I don't intend to do any of the post-credits levels, but I really enjoyed the game. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for a colorful, breezy 3D platformer.

That would be me. I’ll check it out now that I have Game Pass.

I picked up Fitness Boxing in like January, but never quite got into it until the past couple of months. I’ve never been into boxing in any form and never been interesting in fighting so it was a bit of an odd purchase, but turns out it’s pretty good. Enjoyable exercise routines set to music—a little more like guitar hero with boxing moves.

Fitness Boxing 2 released today and I grabbed it, and it’s a worthy sequel. It’s got a lot more polish and a few more “trainers” to pick from, and a lot more hooks in place for collectibles to play dress up, though as it stands right now those are really bare bones from what I can see so far.

I did my longest set ever today and it really did the trick. I think I’m going to quite like it.

While it’s not nearly as well rounded as far as exercise goes as Ring Fit Adventure, it’s a lot easier for me to grab two joycons and start up than to swap the cars and to do all the other prep for Ring Fit, and that lower barrier means Ill do it more often. And that’s a win for me.

I just got the release email and wondered about that. Might be easier to use I thought.

Will try the FB2 demo and see

Cross post from deals thread since it was mentioned recently here:

I've been looking at Fitness Boxing 2 for just this reason. One of the exercise regimens I was able to most faithfully stick to was when I had a boxing bag downstairs, and while shadow boxing doesn't quite have the resistance of a real bag, it should still get the right amount of cardio going. Punching to the rhythm was certainly an enjoyable way to spend 20-30 minutes each day.

Thanks for mentioning this. I just "finished" Ring Fit a few weeks ago and I'm into the new game plus, but I am definitely interested in other fitness games to vary things up. Sounds like I'd be in a similar position starting out - I never really did boxing beyond some thai boxing workouts two decades ago.

Any recommendation to start with 1 or 2? Looks like 1 rarely went on sale.

I'd just dive straight into 2 unless you can find 1 on a really good sale. But with the 5 days I've done with 2, I'm finding it a lot better. The polish is higher, the settings are way more robust, the routines seem a bit more intense (though that may just be a setting I flipped), there are additional trainers and unlocking outfits for them makes more sense, plus they have hooks in place for DLC--whatever form that will take: additional trainers, outfits, or even songs/routines?

In 2, you can adjust the punch timing so if you're always just a bit late, it can be adjusted. Also, you can just mark any of a particular move to always be "perfect" regardless, which is a thoughtful setting. Both 1 and 2 let you turn off any of a particular move if you'd like.

Overall, 2 is just a lot better. And if you're paying the same price, go for the new one. I've not encountered any bugs, crashes, or issues with it that would give reason to wait on an update.

I think they both have a demo, though, if you want to try them out yourself first.

For anyone who's got it, Rhythm Boxing 2 has 2 new free DLC available, adding a higher level of difficulty to 2 of the trainers.

I've spent a remarkable amount of time lately in the demo for Dragon Quest Builders 2. They aren't exaggerating when they call it the "jumbo" demo.

Damn I loved DQB2.

I only buy like one or two $60 games a year, so I debated back & forth a good while before pulling the trigger.

So glad I did as it wound up being one of my biggest surprises of 2019.

You mean Fitness Boxing 2?

Yeah, yeah, but it's rhythm boxing game of fitness

Here I thought he was just a fan of the genre and was picking up all of the boxing games on switch.

Stop me if you've heard this one.

Smash is getting a new character, and surprise of surprises, it's a JRPG anime sword boy.

Not just any JRPG anime sword boy, it's the JRPG anime sword boy.

I'm still not sure what I feel about Sephiroth being added to Smash but I was sure laughing a lot.

Who was looking for MUA3? One is selling in the trading thread

I don’t know if it got its own thread and don’t really need it because I don’t have much to say, but I just finished Link’s Awakening. It was fun but I had to go to a guide a bit more often than I liked. Also further cements my belief that 3D Zelda is better than 2D.

I remember when this came out there were complaints of technical problems - what were they? No trace of it now.

There were gigantic framerate drops at every single screen transition. I ended up dropping the game after a couple dungeons because I wasn't really enjoying it in general, but I definitely remember the constant framerate drops at every screen transition not helping my opinion much.

That's great news if they've been smoothed out since then. I remember Dead Cells received a similar improvement a few months after launch.

Has anyone tried Grindstone on the Switch? How is it to play with a controller?

Super Mario Bros. 35 World Count Challenge

Reach the goal to defeat 3.5 million Bowsers!

The Super Mario Bros. 35 World Count Challenge is an event which will be held three times from January to March, where players from all over the world can work together to try and complete goals during a set period of time.

For the 1st World Count Challenge, players will need to defeat 3.5 million Bowsers in the Super Mario Bros. 35 Special Battle and 35-Player Battles held between January 18, Mon 11:00 p.m. PT and January 25, Monday 10:59 p.m. PT. If the goal is achieved, all participating accounts that defeated Bowser at least once during the event period will receive 350 Platinum Points** that can be used in My Nintendo rewards program. During the 1st World Count Challenge, take on five Bowser Castles in addition to Course 1 of the first four worlds in the week’s Special Battle!

Time to give this game another shot, I guess. I jumped on and killed a couple of Bowsers. It seems to be easier in the regular game than in Special Battle, because you'll probably have a few shots at stage 1-4 and that's a lot easier than the later castles.

Oooh, interesting.

What are y'all's favorite Switch games from the last, say, six months that aren't Hades?

I didn't play it on Switch, but Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was a delight that I wouldn't be surprised would entertain you. Combat's a bit simple at first and there camera really needs to stop moving during the rice planting and farming, but I think it'd be pleasant for ya. Just a warning that there's more game than at first seems.

I enjoyed what I played of the demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, but haven't bought it yet.

In terms of releases from the last six months, uh... that's... that's all I've played that's on the platform.

Super Mario Sunshine

I've never even seen Bowser in SM35. Are these special stages or did I just suck?

Just like in SMB, Bowser's in the last stage of every world. 1-4, 2-4, etc.

Yeah so I never made it through 1-2. I suck. Thanks.

Nothing. 2020 was a wasted year for the Switch.

Struggling to think of anything I've played on Switch this year that hasn't been Slay The Spire, Ori & The Will Of The Wisps or Hades.

New releases? Mario Galaxy for me - I never played the original. Otherwise, I'm still playing daily Mario Kart online.
