Space Sims/Strategy Games Catch-All

Oh yeah I should have said Reassembly but I didn't have it classified properly in Steam. A couple of others I found when fixing that:

Istrolid - free on Steam or in browser

Space Pirates And Zombies 2 - for some reason I just never got into this, but I think you can build your mothership

Space Run and its sequel

You can also make rocketships in Trailmakers and From The Depths, but it's not a primary focus.

And of course there is Kerbal Space Program.

Looks like the next free game on Epic (as of this coming Thursday) will be Crying Suns, a spacey tactical rogue-lite. Any opinions on this one? It looks delightfully pixelated.

I worked a little bit on Reassembly as a favor, glad it was well received

I will finally try Space Haven I think. I've had it on my wishlist for a while.

It's FTL with some cool squadron combat and a much deeper story.

I love it. Veloxi likes it. A few people didn't enjoy it.

It's free, try it.

To be pedantic, I actually found it boring and trite.

Oh I thought you were the other positive. Someone else around here at least liked it. Mostly felt like a pile on when I played it in the summer and said good things. But I wasn't completely alone

I was also told that shortest trip to earth was an FTL like, with more complex ship components. And yeah it was insane, I couldn't even get through the tutorial.

And then Galaxy Squad was supposed to be an FTL XCOM mash up. And it was but both parts were not as good and I never even finished a run.

So an FTL like that actually was fun to play in Crying Suns was refreshing.

There are tons of games, it's hard to keep track.

Crying Suns is fun. It is derivative of FTL, but it also adds a decent story and has good mechanics and it generally flows contentedly on from system to system. I'm probably the other one who spoke up for it.

I played the demo and it was fine. I didn’t dislike it but I didn’t run out and buy it either (for the best, in hindsight...). It almost feels like it would be a better tablet game than PC game.

Oh and another spaceship builder- Gratuitous Space Battles.

You have my battleship! I like Crying Suns, though I never finished. The narrative is pretty interesting and it meshes well with the visuals and music.

Not 100% space, but From the Depths lets you build a ship, either for underwater, on the water, in the air, or in space. You can get into the weeds with design details, sensors, AI, weapons, etc. Plus apparently there is a lot of Workshop stuff.

I'm just getting into it.

Edit: It isn't space and you pretty much need to be an actual engineer to enjoy this game. They have put a lot into it, but I think they put too much into it to be fun (at least for me). For instance, to put an engine on your boat, you need to put the main engine block, crankshafts, carburetors or fuel injectors, exhaust, radiators, turbochargers/superchargers, and other components. It all allows you to tweak your engines' efficiency versus power. Honestly I just want a block called "engine" to do it all. Guns and missiles are the same way. That doesn't even get into the AI controllers, sensors, etc. that can be programmed.

I refunded it, but others might enjoy it.

That’s like Aurora, which I actually played for a few dozen hours. I liked it. Maybe I need to look into FtD...

Oh yeah, FTD is deep and weedsy. It looks like the kind of game that rewards dedication, but there's a hell of a learning cliff. Just the tutorial has dozens of steps.

Ya, FtD is good, its the sort of game that would appeal to the Space Engineer players. The game has gotten very complicated, but the fun of designing then combat testing your creations has a lot going for it.

Did this ever get posted? From Oct, best Star Wars flight games.

They got #1 right.

And #2. I also appreciate that in list of only 17, Battlefront II didn't make the top ten.

List is 10% okay and 90% bullsh*t. Squadrons above X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter? f*cking laughable.

Yoo everyone, Everspace 2 is coming to Early Access on Steam and GOG on January 18th!

After that game is 12-18 months (money is always on the over) away from full release.

Everspace 2 is SO GOOD you guys. SO GOOD.

I returned Everspace 1 after 90 minutes. What improvements does Everspace 2 have over its predecessor?

It's not a FTL-style sector jumping roguelike but an open world, and it's so much better for it.

Oh? Color me intrigued!

Is it still better with a mouse like the first game?

It was like FPS in space flight controls. I enjoyed it but could not play it with a controller

I can confirm as well.

Only way I've ever played both games, so yes?

I know Veloxi has already said it’s good, but I got a little space sim chub reading this little blurb this evening:

"Steven Messner played Everspace 2, the space-based looter-shooter. It's about to hit Early Access and seems like a combination of Wing Commander and the progression systems of Destiny, like somebody saw the loading screen spaceships and decided to make that the game. It's been a while since there was a spaceship game I could get into, maybe this will be the one?"

Just got an email - Everspace 2 has hit Steam Early Access ($39.99US)!

I'm, probably, going to hold off until full release. It's one of most anticipated games and is finally doing what I've asked for this entire time: spaceship RPG.

Yeah I don't have that amount of willpower. Purchased and downloading.
