Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Oh sh*t, Sigur Rós has a new album out? Rad!

Very calm, orchestral, and a guest singer to join Jonsi.

e: no idea what happened to the first embed but fixed now.

Ordered! I was just listening to a bunch of my Sigur Ros vinyl last night.

This song convinced me to buy the whole album. Such a nice change of pace for Christmas music:

Nice. Thanks for the recommendation. My family is enjoying the change of pace.

YEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!

Note to self:
Don't revisit your love of Alice in Chains when you are on unemployment that is about to expire during a pandemic ;P

Damn it is amazing but depressing music! Hard to think it is over 25 years old...

My favorite from the MoPop performances was Fishbone doing a cover of Them Bones.

That Fishbone performance was rad. Where have they been? In recent years I’ve tried to find new releases by Fishbone but I don’t remember finding anything as good as THAT.

Taylor Swift did an amazing job with Bon Iver this past summer with her album "Folklore". Turns out they have 15 more songs out tomorrow in a surprise album called "Evermore".

Folklore is one of the most interesting pop-to-alternative pivots I've ever heard, and I'm hoping that this new album is just as good. I'm not a huge fan of Swift's pop songs, but her songcrafting ability really shows when paired up with Bon Iver's ethereal complexities, and the lyrics are just amazing. I'm thinking this new turn is her real strength, and I hope it continues.

OMG I was skeptical of that Fishbone cover of Them Bones but...
It's fan flippin tastic!

That song is in 7/8 time! Man, I wondered what was so weird about it lol.

Fishbone is absolutely the greatest live show I've ever seen. If the world stops ending and you get the chance...

I heard that there’s a party at ground zero. We should all go.

I’ve been loving this track, and the video is great.

This song was recommended to me by an algorithm. Originally it caught my attention because it reminded me a little bit of That Handsome Devil. Gotta check out more of their stuff now.

That last one sounded like an indie game track. Actually I'd play a game based on it...

I think this is the first time a guitar solo ever made me laugh out loud:

(in a good way I mean)

Xmas song

Doctor Puppet Christmas sing a long

His family just announced that MF DOOM, your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, died of undisclosed causes back in October. I don’t normally get upset when celebrities die but this really bummed me out. DOOM was one of the formative underground voices that got me into hip hop and I still listen to him all the time.

f*ck f*ck f*ck f*ck goddammit no! ahh hell! sh*t sh*t sh*t

RIP DOOM

He was really low key on social media, often using pseudonyms but you could find him if you looked hard enough. I had him friended on several platforms including YouTube and Instagram. I got to tell him how much I appreciate his work on several occasions.

DOOM, you will be missed.

In other awful news (2020's last hurrah?), Tony Rice died over Christmas. I'm nowhere near informed enough around bluegrass, so while I've heard of him, I'd never actually listened to his music. I really regret that now. I feel really terrible that I never bothered engaging with his work until after his death. His album Church Street Blues was recommended to me, and wow, it's incredible. Ridiculously good musicianship, but it's all in service of the song.

If you have any interest in a) bluegrass b) folk c) pretty songs, or d) a 'best of genre' musician doing what they do best, give it a listen.

Here's the title track.

And this version of House Carpenter is sublime. Never thought I'd say that someone has outdone Doc Watson, but here we are.

Okay, as with all her albums, Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters is finally growing on me and getting in my head.

Her brand of righteous anger is delicious!

Just thinking more eyes should see this total bop I've been enjoying for the last month and a half. Love the choreo, and all her backup dancers deserve a shoutout.

He's been part of my musical background for almost my entire life. For the last 5 years or so it looks like he's using the same folks to make his videos.
