General VR Catch-All

I finally bit on some prescription lenses for my Quest 2 (went with vr-wave for easy magnetic on/off). I can't wait til they show up; less glasses smooshed into my face, the better!

1) Who is using Virtual Desktop to stream to regular/desktop VR games their Quest? After finding that my Oculus link cable needed a USB-C to USB-A 3.0 converter and Amazon lacked a teleportation deliver feature, I gave it a shot. It's excellent and I'm stunned how well it works. Playing without wires is where it is at folks. I can spin in Half Life: Alyx all day long. It works well next to my router and in my bigger living room.

Between Virtual Deskop streaming (here are the instructions I used to set it up, BTW) and the link cable (which works via the converter), this now completely replaces my CV1 and is better in every way (the biggest is the lack of external sensors). I'm so stoked to play more.

Thanks! Gonna give this a try!

Is there any chatter about Oculus officially supporting Virtual Desktop streaming or doing it natively in the OS? Seems like the tech is there now, so would imagine it's only a matter of time.

If I recall correctly, John Carmack is all about it but he's having to convince the team to move forward. They are definitely working on it. There was a talk he did at a recent even5 where he discussed it but I'm not sure where that video is now (saw it on twitter ages ago).

But if they did that, how would they lock people into their walled garden storefront?

I think part of the problem is that you need to have a pretty decent router. It works fantastic at my house, but my brother can't get it to work properly at all. He has the typical carrier-provided wifi router while I'm using a higher-end model. If they try to market it as an official solution to non-enthusiasts they're going to run into support issues. They're almost better served by having it be a bit of a "hacky" solution like it is right now.

For sure. I think it'll be a beta feature for a long time if/when it comes out. I could also see them selling some proprietary dongle that maybe makes that more stable.

It essentially requires a 5 GHz router to work properly. You need all the bandwidth you can get.

Oh my, I wish they made those for the Rift S!

I bought a bunch of VR games during the Steam sale, and I can't wait to tell everyone how good they are with the G2, except I still can't get my hands on the 3080 it so desperately needs.

I feel your pain. I finally got wife buy-off to build a new computer, and I can't get the parts I want. I was holding off on playing Half-Life until I upgraded my PC and now I'm getting anxious.

On the flip side, I have a 3090 so really no more spending money for a G2. First world problems!

Just picked up a quest 2, time to try to figure all this stuff out!

My Quest 2 came in and I've had a couple of days with it. First, even with the 'First Steps' tutorial / demo I was giddy. It was so cool to interact with the environment. Next, I played The Room VR and holy crap THAT is cool. When I was standing on a platform I felt like I was actually up high and my knees bent to stabilize myself. The puzzles are so cool to interact with in a 'physical' way. I've only played a little of Half Life Alyx, but that environment so far is the best yet. VR has surpassed my expectations. The only prior VR experience I've had as demoing Beat Saber. That was fun, but The Room VR and Half Life Alyx are incredible.

That's the Achilles heel of VR marketing - there's nothing that conveys the experience that simply experiencing it does.

My partner got himself a quest 2, had a go on Beat Saber and was quite impressed. Also given the current climate, is there any apps that just let you like wonder around pretty places?

I mean... There's https://www.oculus.com/experiences/q...

You can go basically anywhere on Earth in Google Earth VR (Rift store, you need to use a Link cable to connect to your PC) https://www.oculus.com/experiences/r...

Well, that was faster than expected (7 days); just got a tracking number and now am waiting very patiently.

Is there a Oculus Quest 2 bundle that comes with battery pack head strap?

Baron Of Hell wrote:

There's the Quest 2 by itself, then there is a bundle that is the Elite Head Strap with Extended Battery, and also comes with the carrying case. There is no default bundle that includes it all, unless some place like GameStop or BestBuy have something they are touting.

Cool beans. Probably get some grips also.

Costco has (had when in stock) a Bundle that included the Elite Head strap for $430 IIRC. Not sure if there was an extended battery in there or not.

Edit: It looks like it's members only but when in stock it includes this for what it's worth:

Welp, I've finally broken, and today ordered an Oculus Quest 2. I wasn't planning on ever doing VR, and then I saw this game:

And I finally broke down.

For those with the HP Reverb G2, how bad is the sweet spot? I keep seeing complaints about it being bad/small.

I saw people said that to MRTV, accusing HP of sending him a unit with different lenses than the shipped product. So he went and bought a random one off the shelf, and it was identical to his:

In my opinion, there is some false impression going on. I think the increased image clarity makes the warping that occurs at the edges of the fresnel lenses seem more apparent. I have my G2 and I have a Quest 1 from work. I've gone back and forth between the headsets, and I see the peripheral loss of clarity at approximately the same angle, but it seems less pronounced on the Quest because the image isn't all that clear in the viewable area right next to the lens's edges either.

With the G2, moving text from the center of my view to the edge results in seeing the text go from extremely sharp to seeing some focus loss for the first time.

With the Quest, white text is god raying and not particularly crisp right in the center of my view, so moving it to the edge just results in a step up in god rays and lack of clarity, which doesn't stand out as much.

I think this is the same phenomena experienced by people who buy a high end audio system for the first time, and suddenly start hearing all the imperfections in the audio recordings that they've listened to for years.

When I see comments like this one, pulled from the comments of the video above:

the sweet spot is actually so small that even looking at a line of text, a sentence, only a small portion of that text is actually very clear

... I just don't know WTF they are talking about.

My experience is, I can easily read text across pretty much the entire view field, with blurring occurring as the text reaches the edge curvature of the lens, but without the text ever reaching a state of illegibility. And that is without wearing glasses (which I don't own, but which the state of California has informed me I now need in order to renew my license, due to my performance on the vision test at the DMV.)

I mean, don't get me wrong, there's plenty of room for improvement over the G2. I think a wider FOV would make these issues less apparent, and that should be top priority for a G3.

Has anyone tried any of the wide FOV headsets e.g. Pimax?

That's definitely a feature I'm after in my next headset (not that I'm at the point of shopping for one). I'm really feeling the restricted FOV "looking down a toilet roll" of my current Vive.

I have not, no. I would like to try one, though everything I've read indicates that the experience is pretty much compromised in every other sense, hence why these headsets have remained fairly niche in an already niche market.

And I can understand why that would be, because the G2 is where visual fidelity for VR needs to be, and I see just how much compute power it takes to drive that fidelity over the G2's much narrower FOV. I'm sure there's room for slightly wider FOVs with the same 2160x2160 per eye the G2 has, but not for the kind of game changing FOV that something on the Pimax's level would represent.

Thanks that makes me feel better about buying one.

I don't know if you've seen Aircar before but it's worth checking out too for the low low price of free. It's not really a game, but the cockpit view has the same great energy as the one you posted.
