Giant Bomb Bomb-All

II know it's a lot of work, but damn I'd bet they'd get listeners back.

They've been losing a lot of listeners? I would love to see the numbers on that, but I can't seem to find any easily available. Sseems like enough people are still listening to keep two weekly podcasts going at least.

I love Jeff, Brad and Jan. Mostly but didn't always love Ben and am sad he's leaving.

Dude with the concert bathroom story is on tune out for me now. What the f*ck.

Ben is leaving because he realized that he doesn't want to be a public figure. They've lost 3 people in close to one full year, though. I hope they have the budget to at least bring on 2 people (1 for east and 1 for west).

Before Ben and Abby, who’s the third? It isn’t coming to mind.

Never mind, Dan, duh. Morning drowsies.

Double FIFY.

Actually, GB should just merge with Waypoint. That sounds like a good fit

I was never a Ben fan and am glad to see him go. I didn't hate him or anything, I just did not connect with his personality or interests in any way. I agree it feels a little odd for them to have their two of their most junior staff members in the last few months... I'd be very curious to know how much any of the specifics of the RV acquisition played here or if it was simply a matter of that creating a natural opportunity for people to reconsider their steps in their career. Hopefully it's the latter more than the former. Certainly if we get to this summer without any new hires though, I might worry a bit about GB's future.

I like Patrick and listen to Waypoint, but I don't really need him at Giantbomb. Austin, however, I would carry to GB's offices on my shoulders. I like him at Waypoint but felt like he was just a perfect match for Vinny and Alex in NY. That said, I think Austin has been pretty clear he's not interested in rejoining games media, at least not more than he's already in it in a part-time capacity. While we're considering Waypoint poaches, Gita Jackson would be an excellent hire. But, in any case, I assume the Waypoint crew is staying put as long as they are a going concern (which could be a long time but I also would not be shocked if it were gone tomorrow).

Ben made it extremely clear in the podcast that his decision to leave has nothing to do with Red Ventures. The quarantine made him reevaluate his life goals and whether he was happy and realized he wanted. Didn’t want to be a public person anymore and is done with the industry.

As far as they’ve said, GB hasn’t really lost any listeners or members. The audience interest has shifted over the years when Twitch and YouTube became increasingly popular.

Interesting discussion.

I don't staff turnover is a problem; in fact, I think it's mostly a healthy sign that personnel are have ambitions and changing priorities. As people noted when Abby left, there may not be too many opportunities for progression within Giant Bomb.

I even wonder whether more change might be necessary. Perhaps a rethink on the structure and content of both podcasts. For example, the latest episode is more than 2 hours long, and feels very content-lite. I think the current format really struggles when the hosts have found themselves stuck playing the same games for
several weeks and/or there isn't much industry news. A rethink might breathe new life into the shows.

In terms of presenters, I think they should continue to seek out new voices. I initially felt something a mix of sadness and indignation when Shawn Andrich left this site and handed the reins to Amanda Knowlton. "How dare they change MY podcast." But I realise now how much the podcast and the site has benefited from being refreshed in this way.

I think the concern here is that a refresh is hard to come by when it's always the new people who leave and it's only the original team who stick around.

Yeah, I think that speaks the most loudly. Jeff, Brad, Rorie, Alex, and Vinny have all been there since the early days, and only a few of those people are ones that I enjoy listening to or watching. That's not including the "rotating chair" of Jeff Bakalar.

A light-hearted tangent. This Best Of 2020 is a delight and you should watch it.

Not even all the way through the Best Looking category and they’re already axing all my picks. Haha. That’s what I come to Game of the Year for.

I like these discussions because, even though I rarely agree with them, they give me things to think about and appreciation for some games I didn’t have before.

It also is making me realize just how much video gaming I did this year! I’ve played a substantial amount of almost all of they’re Best Looking picks (before cuts).

I was pretty on board with “Jesse - FF7 Remake” for “Best Dads”. The starter list was pretty choice . Lol.

In the end, she didn’t make the cut, but I did get to hear Jan’s excellent Barrett impression of him shouting, “Marlene!” Multiple times, in fact.

I'm really enjoying the discussions yesterday. Last year was the weakest year and this is certainly a return to what they had done in the past. As far as I can tell, there will only be the deliberations and nothing else.

Yesterday's went in the Bombcast feed around 5pm PST. I expect a similar timeframe for the rest of the week.

Yesterday's discussions are in the Giant Bombcast Premium feed for me.

Edit: oops, double post. I'm bad at websites.

Yeah it just went up there for me. I am not saying that I had any effect, but it did go up there after I emailed support about it today.

Not all heroes wear capes, but I'm going to put my cape on.

Lol. Are there really people who think Dick Tracy is a good movie?

Do you even have to ask?

Season 2020 of Giant Bomb is the Year of the Vinny! There have been four videos uploaded to the site today and every one of them has Vinny.

He's playing both AssCreed and Hitman? I'm in.

It's not. It's a great movie.

I wasted pounds on that video rental in the 90's.
