Welcome folks, and happy “99th anniversary of the first use of insulin to treat diabetes” week! Insulin had been discovered in the human body 21 years earlier, but it took some trial and error (mostly on dogs) to work out its connection to diabetes. The doctors who pioneered its use, Banting and Best, tested the injections on themselves before recommending it. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you discover the properties of crafting ingredients by eating them.

January is the quietest month for new games. It’s Pile Month, a chance to clear out the back catalogue and free up HD space for future shinies. I’m still having loads of fun with AC: Valhalla, flyting, raiding, hunting, and whatnot. The story is surprisingly engaging, and engagingly surprising—I just came across some stuff in it that links to AC III.

Someone has decided to do a VR simulation of Hiroshima during the infamous atomic strike. VR Hiroshima 1945 lets you walk around the city, then have a Terminator 2 moment. People are not depicted, so it’s really a dissolving architecture simulator.

Bushfires: Animal Rescue is, as you’d guess, about rescuing animals during a fire. It’s a little close to home to feel like fun for me; even seeing the game’s red, orange, and brown colour palette gives me flashbacks to this time last year.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Core Collection brings all 5 of these OG jump-scare games to all platforms, perhaps 3 years after their cultural high-water mark. Similarly, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game - Complete Edition brings this beat’em up and its awesome soundtrack, with all its DLC, to current-last-gen consoles, 10 years after the original game came out.

The Switch list is buffed out with its usual grab-bag of ports, and I wonder when the next original Switch game is coming. Not much happened for the Switch after Animal Crossing last year; I feel it’s due for a big ‘sclusy.

As with all January releases so far, nothing jumps out at me. If I had to find a GOTW, I’d give it to Life of Fly, a narrative game that tells 12 short stories, all from the perspective of a fly. Ever wanted to be a fly on the wall? Now’s your chance.

Boy, that's going to be one sugar free party next year!

Still on a Bethesda kick? Lol

Release list is the calm before the delayed game storm that may result in more delays. We shall see!
