PC has been confirmed? I thought it was just a rumor based off of the Capcom leak from a few weeks (or months?) ago. Despite the fact that I'm super excited for it, I think I'm going to wait for the PC version this time...

Ohhhhhh, you may be right, I was basing it off the leak, perhaps it's not confirmed yet.

So what’s the sell? Is this a standard MH game, in the 4 vein?

It looks that way. Pretty graphics on the Switch. Some new mechanics around a string that you can pull yourself through space with. Like Spider-Man.

Oh, and Palamutes... your dog companions.

I'll start posting all the videos that have been released. First, there is the Trailer that was released at Tokyo Game Show this year.

The map is more of an open world like MH World, not discreet zones like previous MH games.

Here is about 50 minutes of gameplay shown at the Tokyo Game Show. This should just about give you a full idea of what you're going to get.

New trailer from the Game Awards:

It looks to be a bit of a mixture between the World and the MH of old. There will be interconnected levels like World, but it looks to be much more of a dueling style game with fewer environmental distractions and likely less built in verticality in the fighting arenas. I would suspect fewer interactions between different monsters as well, but we'll have to wait for more details on that. I loved using the environment to fight in World, but there were plenty of times I missed the more straightforward mano a mano feeling from the previous games. It should be a nice change of pace.

Rise is made by the "B team", by which I mean the team that made Frontier and Generations. The big hook this time is the wirebug. It's functionally a grappling hook, but not in the same way as the clutch claw from World. Rather than hooking onto a monster or designated grappling points, you're latching onto the bug itself, allowing you to pull off stuff like this:
IMAGE(https://i1.wp.com/www.mercurynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Nintendo-Switch-GIF-downsized_large.gif?fit=620%2C9999px&ssl=1)

You can store multiple charges of the wirebug at once, allowing you to use it for traversal, dodging, aerial attacks, or a number of wirebug specific moves for each weapon. The wirebug specific weapon moves are called Silkbind attacks. They're highlighted in the weapon trailers that have been releasing the past few days.

As an example, the Gunlance trailer shows one of the Silkbind attacks reloading shells off of an aerial attack, while the other restores weapon sharpness off a block or guard point. It also looks like you can fire off a bunch of shells to launch yourself in the air, so Gunlance will be getting some strong main weapon consideration from me just for that

Other weapon trailers so far:
Bow
Dual Blades
Lance
Heavy Bowgun
Light Bowgun
Hammer
Sword & Shield
Insect Glaive
Great Sword
Switch Axe

Demo out on Switch now!

Hmm, I can't seem to find the demo on the eShop; perhaps the release is scheduled for later today.

Regardless, I'm very excited that the Flooded Forest is back.

This time around, I'd like to see how far I can get without looking up any guides and just bumbling through based on info received directly from the game, along with any official manuals and videos from Capcom. Could end up being really fun or really frustrating. Let's find out!

Just to be clear, resources like kiranico's database and videos from gaijin hunter and Arekkz Gaming are wonderful and have helped me immensely over the years.

We have some clarification from Nintendo Life:

Update #2: Nintendo UK has confirmed to us that the release date for the demo is indeed tomorrow (the 8th) UK time.

I thought I'd find a thread, cool. First I heard of this MH was a Switch Demo announcement this afternoon. Rushed to Switch as soon as was able, nothing yet...

That'll be why, thanks Ted.

Sorry to jump the gun . The announcement just gave today's date, not a time.

The demo's now available for download, at least here in the US.

File size is 1.6GB.

No worries! And sorry if I sounded like I was calling you out; definitely not my intent.

Looking forward to the hunt!

I looked for it earlier and couldn't find it, now I know why I will start the download shortly, and I am looking forward to playing it this weekend!

Demo won’t seem to download for me.

Store is down. Damn.

Sorry to hear this; hopefully things are working better now.

Yeah it downloaded about an hour after I posted.

I gotta say, I don’t know why I bother downloading and trying these demos. There isn’t a ton of iteration between entries.

I’m a bit disappointed in the visuals. It doesn’t seem like much of a step up from the most recent 3DS game.

I've been playing some Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U) recently, and I can definitely see an improvement between that and the 5 minutes I've spent with Rise!

I’ll try again tonight, the harder hunt. There were a few new visual flourishes with the long sword specials, but that’s not really to do with the fidelity.

Wow, the hunting horn feels really aggressive this time around.

The move set and the concept of melodies has changed a lot.

Regarding melodies, simply queuing up the same two notes in a row now activates a buff.

As far as I can tell, gone are the complex note sequences and pressing R for a recital to activate the buff.

I suspect this is a response to the ongoing perceived or actual unpopularity of the HH.

I don't think there'll be any more randoms dooting in the corner, but my muscle memory will be wrecked for bit.

Yeah, it feels like a completely different weapon now. On the one hand, it seems like it's going to be way more powerful than it ever has been. Case in point:

On the other hand, it feels much simpler than before. I'm a bit worried that it will lack the nuance to keep me interested for long. I've only done 3 practice hunts with it, so this is just a gut reaction. I plan to give it a fair shake for a while when the full game releases.

Gunlance testing shall commence tomorrow.

I'm gutted

Hunting horn is probably my favourite fantasy weapon in any game. I really identified with the slow, methodical and oddball playstyle. I loved the reach, I loved the big hits. I really enjoyed timing all of my songs and keeping track of when each buff would run out. Most of all, I just genuinely enjoyed swinging my hefty hammer on a stick around.

They've completely removed everything I liked about the weapon. This isn't hunting horn any more. People who never played the weapon before may see big numbers and be happy, but I'm genuinely so upset that my favourite playstyle has be torn out of the game because it was "too complex". There are other ways of making playstyles more accessible without completely dumbing them down. I'm appalled by how "button mashy" this is now. There's no consequences for wildly swinging your horn around now. You just press buttons and win.

Genuniely upset, and concerned over the future of Monster Hunter. Part of the appeal is that it's deep and rewards time spend in the world. It's getting more and more dumbed down and that's so at odds with what the series has been about until now.

Well, don't lose hope quite yet. I don't have the source on me at the moment, but this was datamined information that I found from a thread on reddit a couple days ago:

Recently, it's been uncovered that weapons will apparently be able to exchange 1 wirebug move and 2 specific aspects of their normal movesets for alternative options. HH's recital mechanics are 1 such element we'll be able to swap out. The version we currently have in the demo is called 'Melody Mode: Performance' and is geared towards letting you set buffing on autopilot and focus on DPS, hence the insta-songs and recital that plays your entire list at once. The alternative, 'Melody Mode: Echo' sounds more like what we had in past games based on its description:

Melody Mode: Echo An action affecting invigorating melodies. Generates a melody effect from the Musical Staff using ZR, while boosting your own abilities. This mode is useful for applying various melody effects.
Compared to Performance mode...
Melody Mode: Performance An action affecting invigorating melodies. Two attacks of the same note in a row generates a melody effect. Playing using ZR boosts your own abilities. A mode focused solely on combat.

That aside, there are also some other things that can be changed out: superpound can be swapped with a 'Melodic Slap' that sends out a sound burst with high stun values, and Earthshaker can be swapped with an unrevealed Silkbind move called 'Bead of Resonance' that places a web trap that generates melody effects and sound explosions whenever you play songs near it.

I have no idea if this will have any impact on the new flashy animations, but choosing my attacks based on what notes I needed to play my next song was always my favorite part of the weapon, so I might be okay with those changes if song creation and execution is still a thing. Fingers crossed.

I think the MH team has generally been pretty fantastic about streamlining weapons without making them feel dumbed down. This is the first time I've felt like they might have gone too far, but considering how unpopular HH has continued to be in all iterations of the game, I can't really blame them for making more drastic changes. If the datamined leaks are true, perhaps both HH veterans and new players can be happy.

I’m finding the new health and stamina buff system a little frustrating. Here’s hoping that meals can replace it, but I’m doubtful. Between this and the visuals not being great (handheld only here) has me thinking I might be better served getting back into World, since I never picked up Iceborne.

Got the demo, maybe I can try it this weekend.

Of course I never played World after the demo. But I have it now on PS5 for free so I did install it at least.

I know getting in solo hunts on Switch will be super easy with sleep mode. But I miss the group hunts with y'all from 4U on 3DS.
