PlayStation 5 Games You Can Play Right Now

Given the art style of Control, I'm curious to see what, if anything, they'll attempt to improve graphically. Character models are the only thing I can see them getting a lot of mileage out of improving.

I doubt they'll do a new build with new textures. I imagine it will just look closer to the way it looks on a reasonably powerful PC with an RTX card.

Y'all be stirring my interest to try the game at long last. Kratos evolves past being a dick and becomes more than anger personified. What! Not to mention stronger similarities to DMC and Bayonetta than Souls or 'Borne. What! I have been terribly misled.

David Jaffe is no longer involved, so, yeah, it's allowed to move past the immature versions of yore.

Also, it's a first party Sony game, so it's required to be about The Unbearable Seriousness of Middle-aged Men.

Did anyone else notice the gigantic dot-matrix robot face wayyyy off in the distance, who was singing the GPU Jungle lyrics the whole time?

Yup! It's my favorite detail from Astro's Playroom haha.

Did you find the easter egg where all the lyrics were written out on a hidden wall too?

There's at least two of those walls that I found. And I'm sure that if I found 2 there's like 10.

Yup, I found two such walls in GPU Jungle, and none in SSD Speedway.

Hah, no, I only found one! I thought I was doing a pretty good job finding Easter eggs but there are soooooo many!

Not going to say any spoilers, but just finished Miles Morales... just wow. What a great game.

January PS+ games for Tuesday:

PS4 Shadow of the Tomb Raider

I started Assassin’s Creed Valhalla earlier today and found it kind of lacking. The combat system just pales in comparison to what I’m coming off, Ghost of Tsushima. Does it get more interesting than two attacks and block/parry?

This was the first time I’ve run into a meaningful difference when choosing between quality and performance modes on PS5. I started with quality, but the combat looked extremely stilted at 30fps. I changed to performance and everything looks better because it’s so much smoother.

Not sure I’ll stick with it, coming right behind Ghost and Horizon before that, my open world bar is set awfully high. Not sure what else to play. Maybe I’ll cave and open that series X...

The weapons you choose to use in Valhalla have a strong impact on how combat feels. You can forgo blocking by using two-handed weapons, or wield two shields at once. Eventually you can unlock the ability to dual-wield two-handed weapons for maximum hilarity. You can also focus on stealth or ranged combat with the various bow types. So there is more than just light/heavy/parry, but it does take time to start finding different weapon types and unlock abilities which further flesh out your kit.

Not.. really? I mean, you can eventually dual wield 2h weapons, if that's your thing. And there's some variety in the weapon choices you make. And I'd say the parry feels pretty decent when you land it and get to do a stun attack. But no, it doesn't have much depth. Neither does the armor.

I'm still slogging through it, but honestly I'm surprised by how un-engaging I find it. I loved Origins and Odyssey, and I love Viking stuff, and the time period in England is rad and goes with The Last Kingdom and whatnot. I love the idea of the settlement. On paper, this game should be right up my alley, but it kinda just isn't. Strangely, it's my least favorite of the 3 basically-simultaneously-released Ubisoft collectathons.

It's fine, and I'll finish it, but yeah.

It’s interesting coming into this and seeing what is and isn’t left from the old AC games, as I haven’t played any since Black Flag. I’ll definitely put some more time in, but my initial impression wasn’t stellar.

Edit: stick Monster Hunter World on the “this PS4 on PS5 game looks better than any actual PS5 game” list. Holy crap, the fidelity and smoothness.

The Resident Evil Village - Maiden demo dropped last night on PS4/PS5. There's no combat, it's essentially a standalone experience to give you a taste of the atmosphere of the game. You play an unknown character known as 'the maiden' who starts the demo locked up in the dungeon of Dimitrescu Castle. Its your job to escape.

The atmosphere is very good, the build up as you attempt to get out of the dungeon, up into the lavishly decorated rooms of the castle itself, is filled with tension. A couple of things I appreciated, the game really holds back when your sure something is about to scare the crap out of you. Its happy to let you soak in the sinister environments, give you sound ques to think about & ramp up the music when needed. There's also a moment that I wish I'd explored further to see what would have happened. I'll maybe look it up or see if someone else posts about it on here

Spoiler:

what happens if you had followed the witch as she's going up the stairs, got close enough for something to happen. Its such a cool moment even from a distance.

The RE Engine is looking well too, all in all this has got me well interested into picking RE8 up in May.

I should get around to playing RE7 off the PS Plus Collection too!

I watched a bit of the RE8 trailer (I don’t want to see too much.) I’m picking up a lot of influence from Bloodborne. I haven’t played many Resident Evil games but, having enjoyed the RETRY play throughs of the recent remakes, I’m in for RE8. I also need to play RE7 once I have a PS5/PS Plus Collection.

Oh man, that is so good to hear. RE7 is probably my favorite in the series. Granted, I played it in VR, so it was a very memorable, intense experience, but it is a great game outside of this. I am glad to hear them really using tension to increase the horror. The whole action-military aspect of the RE games just bores me to tears. I am excited.

Demo is just for PS5 it seems, my bad for mentioning it was out on PS4 too.

Great to hear Garth, have you played RE2 Remake? I thought that was extremely good. My favourite though by a large margin is RE4 back when I played it on the Gamecube, that felt like a colossal step forward for the series. Onto RE7, I hope it delivers most in tension & has a decent story.

I’m holding out for an RE4 remake. Although, I hear the original holds up.

I loved RE4 when it came out and had a great time with the RE2 remake. However, I didn't love RE7. It felt like playing a horror movie dropping most of the sci-fi stuff I love from RE. For me it was just OK.

Ehhh.

I have really fond memories of Resident Evil 4. I played it on the Wii with the pointer controls, and it was a fantastic experience. I bought the HD version on Switch not too long ago, and while the gameplay is still fantastic, the controls are terrible. The game uses the right thumbstick to simply swing the camera 90 degrees to your left or right rather than panning around your character. It's clearly an artifact of a control scheme developed before dual analog conventions were solidified (and also shows the game's origins on the GameCube controller with that weird yellow hatswitch) but I couldn't get used to it. Just moving around became a constant source of frustration, and I quit not far in.

I would love a remake of RE4 in the style of RE2 and RE3.

TIL there are people who actually like the wacky sci-fi parts of Resident Evil.

I have played the RE2 remake and thoroughly loved it. I am not sure if I have it in me for a second playthrough, but I am considering it. RE4 was a great outing as well. It definitely dips into the wonky characters later on in the game. But as Higgledy mentions, I would love to see an RE4 remake. They could do some absolutely fantastic things with newer hardware.

The controls in the original would probably kill it for me. I’ll wait for the inevitable remake.

I want to say that I played a ported over version on my Playstation 3 (or 4...I can't recall), and the controls were the biggest hindrance. Something that I don't recall even thinking about back when it was originally released was suddenly a major annoyance. So that could really use an overhaul.

Hell, I played it on the Wii, with only one thumbstick and waggly point-the-Wiimote gestures substituting for the right thumbstick.

I've never really been a fan of the Resident Evil series, with the exception of the last one one, and that was because I played it in VR. Without VR in this one, I doubt I'll play it, unless I pick it up on a whim at steep discount years from now; VR was really a transformative experience for me.

You should see my Netflix recommendations . Seriously though it's not like I'm playing these games for smooth controls....

I bought the PC version and found it unplayable for the same reason. I quit after the first area.

February's Playstation Plus lineup is fantastic. I'll post this in both console game threads, since the offerings are split between platforms now.

Destruction Allstars - PS5
Control: Ultimate Edition - PS4/PS5
Concrete Genie - PS4

Reminder to claim Destruction Allstars online even if you don't have a PS5 yet.

Holy crap! I held out on Black Friday discounts for Control because I knew only the Ultimate Edition would have the PS5 patch, and now apparently I'm getting it for free. That's...kind of crazy, but I'm not complaining.

Yay passed on Control sales too but looking forward to playing it finally.
