GWJ Online Boardgame Group

So several of us are playing a game of Troyes on BGA. It's really neat but really opaque. I'm not sure whether that's my subpar reading of the rules, the video, the tooltips, or because the game itself is just tough to explain unless it's in great detail. I was so bewildered by our Goodjers game that I jumped into a friends game for some tutoring and got butchered. Now one of those friends is taking me through a 2-player game, and the design is opening up, but it's been a learning cliff, not a curve. I have a feeling I'll really appreciate the design by the end of these games, but it is really a gamers game.

Been wanting to give Troyes a go...you're just making me want to play it more!

Some very interesting additions to Yucata and BGA recently:

Yucata now has Underwater Cities and Lorenzo il Magnifico.

BGA added a large number of games, including: Forbidden Island (premium), Concept, Welcome To Las Vegas, Marco Polo II (also premium).

Enjoy !

Yeah, BGA has been adding quite a lot recently. I'm fairly new to Yucata and I'm currently playing a game of Lorenzo il Magnifico. I'll definitely check out Underwater Cities on there too.

Yucata just added Grand Austrian Hotel.

and BGA announced this in their New Year's news post:

Every Wednesday, a new game. Every 2 weeks, a big game. There is plenty of games coming for 2021 that you can't even dream of.

If you are looking to learn a game, happy to learn along side you!

Count me in to learn some new games as well! Apparently, I must have added you, matttutor, to my buddy list on Yucata a LONG time ago and still have not played a game with you yet! Definitely would be interested in starting up a game of any/all of those with you guys if you haven't already! (I have the same name as I do here on Yucata & BGA, btw.) Finishing up some games on Yucata so, needing a few more in my queue!

I'd be happy to jump in on any Yucata games. Dreaded_Gazebo on Yucata, Dreaded Gazebo on BGA. Feel free to toss me an invite to anything, gladly play games I know or learn something new!

Hi matttutor, quasiChaos & Dreaded Gazebo, I've added you all to my buddy list on Yucata (I'm Neutrino on there). I'm definitely up for an async game of something that I have already played and have a modicum of familiarity with.
I'm not that good at learning by playing async on web platforms with medium to high complexity games, I much prefer a synchronous game on Tabletop Simulator or a digital app version for that.
I have played Grand Austrian Hotel a couple of times on TTS so I'm willing to give that one a try on Yucata

So far I've tended to play 2p async games on BGA, I'm currently playing my first game of Puerto Rico on there with 4p but it's not going very well! Targi is my favourite game on BGA so far, Santorini and Hive are fun too, I'm learning 7 Wonder Duel at the moment. (I'm NeutrinoVe on BGA).

I've added you all as Yucata "buddies" as well. I was going to create an invite for a Random game based on the games we like/favorite, but it doesn't look like you all have selected which games you prefer yet.

If anyone has suggestions for a game, we could start one. I can attempt to learn one. I haven't played Grand Austrian Hotel, but it sounds interesting and willing to learn. That would be my suggestion. Thoughts or other suggestions?

I know I've played Targi with Neutrino (up for another game sometime if you are, also my fave on BGA, 50+ games now must be). I may have given you a game too Matttutor? (edit, sorry, probably Manimal, same first couple letters, close)

I played a fair bit of Castles of Burgundy on Yucata in the summer but nothing else. Am up for trying some more stuff async if there's room, just give me a nudge. Bubblefuzz over there too.

Have a fair few enjoy over on BGA... Russian Railroads, Tzolkin, 7 Wonders Duel being a few. Just learning first game of Caylus which shows promise.

I haven't played Yucata before, but am up for trying that, or anything else, on BGA too. I'm also LastSurprise over there, with the same icon.

The implementation of Hanabi got updated not that long ago and it's really nice now. Also, by default it marks your cards with the clues given which is cheating compared to the physical version, but might make it less frustrating for some.

Great! I'll have to check out the list of games available on Yucata, of the ones I know are on there; Grand Austrian Hotel (best at 2p good 3p), Lorenzo il Magnifico (best at 3-4p) The Castles of Burgundy (best at 2p, 3-4p?) would be my initial picks.

Sure, I'm up for another game of Targi on BGA and perhaps we can have a game of 7WD once I have had a couple more games. I'm keen to try Russian Railroads at some point too.

I'll add you on Yucata

I had a BGA meetup with some friends last night. The highlight for me was playing Colt Express. The site was a little sluggish, but that might have been due to a friend’s crappy online connection. I jokingly told him to ask his kids to get off of YouTube. Shortly afterwards his connection was fine...

I think my BGA handle is D3mian. Please friend me up if you feel inclined to do so.

At least on BGA, there is a (pretty inactive) GWJ group - game invites etc. can be shared there easily.

https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=...

I think the folks on BGA play a lot of games, it's just that the communication on BGA itself is a bit lacking

Put an invite out there though and I'll be all over it! Maybe we can use this thread to post our game invites.

Speaking of which, I'm looking for another player or two for a turn-based game of Yokohama if anyone is interested: https://boardgamearena.com/table?tab...

Invite is restricted to folks in the GWJ community on BGA, so join on up if you want to hop in the game.

Let us know how the game is. Curious to give it a try once I figure out how it works.

Yeah, there is definitely room for improvement here on BGA. I mean, unless I'm missing something I have to click on my profile just to get to the group. Why not have a group shortcut on the main page? How about a live chat screen for groups?

Imagine the members of the GWJ group (https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=...) are already aware but BGA has added some interesting games recently (of course the Asmodee 'takeover' is the biggest news...):

Oriflamme, Abyss, Quetzal, Res Arcana, Forbidden Island...

And, currently in Alpha-testing, Lost Ruins of Arnak, Beyond the Sun, Harbour and Watergate.

Res Arcana is pretty good.

I'm currently playing my second game of Res Arcana on BGA, still learning but it seems good. I've also played Abyss which I enjoyed, Oriflamme I'd like to try.

I think that you have to be specifically registered for Alpha access on BGA but can then invite others if you are. I'm keen to play Watergate at some point and I'll be trying out Lost Ruins of Arnak with my online gaming group via Tabletop Simulator soon.

Definitely some good game releases coming for BGA, let's hope Asmodee doesn't mess it up.

I'd also like to play Abyss, Watergate, and BtS

Do you all primarily coordinate times to play using Discord? I was playing on BGA with a few people from GWJ last summer, but kind of fell out of it. Some time has opened back up and I'd love to connect with more of the community here.

Is there a GWJ boardgamers Discord?

I think there's a thread in the regular gwj discord, though don't really look at it.

Am up for more bga. I just put a shout out recently on the gwj bga group if anyone fancies some async terra mystica. Other games enjoyed recently dungeon petz and res arcana.

Playing real time is difficult for me but I am always down for async games on BGA, Yucata, etc. Can just send me invites or post here or in the discord.

Async works for me as well. Invites welcome

Re: BGA Alpha games. Yes, only available to Alpha reviewers but I think you are correct that invites can be sent to anyone. I am in the Alpha group (*I forgot the qualifications but I think simply having playing many games over time was it...*) and if you want an invite, let me know.

Yucata just added On the Underground.

Neglected to mention some roll and writes also popped up on BGA - Railroad Ink and Welcome to...

[edited to add - I'm not part of the Discord FYI ]

Is there a GWJ boardgamers Discord?

Yes, there's an online boardgaming section for planning games in the GWJ Discord channel. There's also the Apollo bot there to schedule a live game after discussing.

For arranging async game on BGA it's possible to create a game there and select 'restrict table access', then 'restrict to group' selecting the Gamers with Jobs group. When the game is set up it creates a web-link for the table, you can then post on the group page, here in the forum, or over on Discord.
