DC Catch-All [Spoiler Zone]

Wow. We just finished this movie and it was really REALLY bad. It’s right up there with some of the worst for me. I’m not even sure it’s better than Justice League or X-Men Apocalypse! Hell, I enjoyed Batman vs Superman more, and Thor The Dark World is Shakespeare next to the story and writing for this film.

I didn’t love the first one, but overall it was very good. But I’m staggered at the dip in quality for this movie. It seems according to IMDB they didn’t use the original writer. I wonder if there were other behind the scenes issues, or just the case of letting the director go as over the top as they want because the first one was a hit.

Completely agree. On top of the that, the fight scenes were mediocre or lame. It's same level as Justice League for me. Which was bad.

I was watching something and they called wonder woman a rapist. During the movie I did think it was odd they never addressed a situation until the end. I didn't think about what that meant until now. But the way the movie handled the situation would make her a rapist.

Big spoiler will ruin the entire movie

Spoiler:

Wonder Woman wishes that Steve comes back. Steve ends up coming back to life by taking over the body of a random person. My first thought was that the universe was changed to insert him back into the world but under a new name. That is not the case though, he jumps into a dude's body and takes him over completely.

So while Steve is in this guy's body he he screws wonder woman and repeatedly risks the guys life. After the danger has gone away Wonder Woman runs into the guy Steve body jacked. She never tells him they had sex or that he was nearly killed multiple times. Instead she just smiles at him knowingly.

So wonder woman is a rapist.

Best quick summary I’ve seen of the many weird backward decisions in WW84:

...except that summary doesn’t mention the rape thing.

The movie could/should be cut down to the opening scene, the story about the armor, and the credits stinger.

That’s it.

I thought the movie was a snoozefest. The Max Lord character was annoying and not needed. I believe it would have been better if Cheetah v WW drove the whole movie. I was also taken back how all the seriousness of the first movie was gone and the cheese was just thrown at you all the time, it did not work.

Such a disappointing 2 hours.

I thought Max Lord was the best part of the movie and they should have dropped cat lady. I oddly forgot she was in the movie towards the end until she popped back up. A movie with just her as the villain would have worked but I'm not sure if they knew how to use her. The Cat god story line would have worked and would have been personal. Nobody except Dianna and few other people wold know it happen. Nearly everything they did with cat lady in this movie was dumb like it was afterthought.

Why does Pete Davidson get work?

I always thought he was Lorne Michaels' nephew and got a free ride at SNL.
I think he's a "class clown sitting at the back of the class" caliber of funny, not prime-time-tv funny, let alone Hollywood-blockbuster-funny.

So, WW84 was very...meh, except for the mid-credits scene, it was just...meh.

I did like how the ending

Spoiler:

was done by talking, not by fighting, and linked back to Diana showing Steve the truth

and, by far, the mid-credits teaser was the best part of the movie.

The rest?? meh.

My opinion on WW:

I liked the battles. I think the slow down is part of the WW/DC battle aesthetic for sure. I did think the end was kinda rushed plus

Spoiler:

I have zero confidence that in the end everyone would renounce their wishes. Also I agree that so much in the world got messed up there had to be some fallout from the incident.

Also I may not be qualified but I did not see the racism in the movie that a some people online mentioned.

Some of it is context.

Gadot is Israeli and has shown support for her home government. So a shot of her swinging in to save some kids from a missile or whatever is... well it's just blatant hypocrisy really.

She actually just used a rocket that Steve shot to fly in the air - it never got close to the kids - she was rescuing the kids from the vehicle caravan that was barreling toward them. i think people took that out of context from some promo shots I guess.

Yup. They saw the kids playing in the road, and the vehicles barreling towards them, so Steve shot the rocket so she could lasso it and get ahead of the vehicles to save the kids.

I was glued to the tv for anything Wonder Woman was in, live tv and cartoon. I go to movies to be entertained. I enjoyed WW84. Brought back so many memories of the cheesy tv series that I enjoyed!

This is kinda missing the actual point of why it's sh*tty but I don't think we can have this discussion here.

I was just explaining what was going on in the scene, nothing more than that.

If people were upset about Captain Kirk using someone else's body to have sex in, imagine how they'll react when they find out Captain Archer did that on a weekly basis back in the day.

This was one of his better pitch meetings. The movie gives him so much to work with.

Gadot was vocally supportive of an Israeli campaign that killed 4 children playing soccer in a missile attack. And as far as I'm aware she's never walked this back. (Also note her post is 8 days after those kids were killed)

The parallels between that and the scene in the movie are ill-considered at best. A malicious attempt at white-washing at worst.

Even aside from that, and the racism, and the rape, the movie was so stodgy and boring it's made me concerned about Rogue Squadron. It felt like 4 episodes of a TV show randomly edited together.

What was the racism? I think I missed that.

Mainly the Middle eastern stereotypes that come from a period Chuck Norris movie, and there were only two Black people with speaking roles, one of them a homeless person.

Ah, you are right. I must've missed that as there was so much awful, it was hard to take it all in.

I'd say it's ignorance/lazyness, instead of blatant racism. Just like the whole movie really.

Did anyone notice how the sad batman theme song from Dawn of Justice was used in the climax? I have a feeling this and the Adagio songs placement weren't a decision made by Hans.

As usual, Text from Superheroes kills it:

I laughed but I liked the movie and I am a bit sad about how much it is being panned

I agree. I largely liked it. It had a rare beat of positivity at times that was severely lacking in the world at the time I saw it. And then things got worse, so.... "classic monkey's paw"?

Anyway, while I enjoyed it the stuff with the guy's body is obviously terribly problematic. The Pitch Meeting guys covered this pretty well in their video.

There was so much wrong with the film. Taking over the guys body, criminally under using Kristen Wigg plus the horrible CGI abomination at the end, and that terrible climax resolution! Seriously! Blargh.

I'm the opposite. I thought the Honest Trailer made it look better than it was.

Enjoyed it immensely. I see the problems. I understand why they bother people. The only one I really have a hard time getting past is Steve Trevor as body snatcher. I love what he brings to the movie, but the circumstances are too gross for me to look past. Beyond that, the flick puts its stake in the ground early for what it is (a total goof show with a metric ton of heart), and as a viewer, you either accept the terms or not. There's nothing wrong with not accepting them; it's not for everyone, but I adored it. More important to me, my kids adored it, especially my daughter. At the end of the day, that's who the movie is for, and I'm happy about that.

HiTop Films (YT channel) also summed it up pretty well for me.

I rewatched WW84 and liked the kid beginning a lot more than I did the first time. Unfortunately that didn't approve my overall opinion on the movie.
