DC Catch-All [Spoiler Zone]

I’m so glad they used that song because it is so rarely heard in slo-mo dramatic contexts...

FFS Snyder used it over a sex scene in Watchmen. Is that what we’re supposed to be thinking about watching this?

That trailer just makes me think of this old Nerdwriter YT video. I think it does a good job of pinpointing why I find Zack Snyder's movies so pretty but so unsatisfying:

Love Nerdwriter1.

Not quite, but that reaction is understandable.

Man, Harley Quinn on HBO Max is so awesome. I love it.

And you were correct sir!

Why does Pete Davidson get work?

Wow, that's a big cast.

Well this looks kind of rid... Nathan Fillion? f*ck, now I have to see it.

I like Nathan Fillion, and he can elevate a role pretty well, but it's rare he can do that enough to carry a whole movie. And Joel Kinnaman, who kinda does have that ability, was not able to do that in the first one.

I've kind of soured on Fillion over the years. Between the noise about bullying Stana Kanic on the set of Castle, the sexual harassment stuff that went down on the set of The Rookie (for which he is a producer, all of whom did nothing), and his continued association with the conservative asshole Adam Baldwin, I really question whether he is that nice of a guy and worth the attention he gets.

I watched WW84 this morning and quite liked it. It’s wild, however, that in a key scene they just crib a song from the soundtrack for Sunshine.

Enjoyed it as well. If you are of a certain age, make sure you stay for the mid-credit scene.

Loved the credit extra bit...

The movie on a whole for me was 'ok'. Lot of things in the movie felt forced. The first one was a much better movie.

I also instantly recognized Adagio in D Minor... but uh, Zimmer is not alone. That piece of music has been in like 50 other things between then and now, apparently. It was even re-used wholesale by John Murphy himself in Kick-Ass, which was a way bigger misuse of it than anything else I've heard it in.

It did momentarily take me out of the movie, but that's because I'm a dork for film music. It fits the scene fine.

It fits the scene perfectly, but I was just taken aback since I recognized it so clearly from another movie I loved.

I wasn’t aware of its other uses, tbh.

In the middle of WW84 and, in context of the previous movie, it is not great. The previous movie had a serious tone. A lot of this one is just plain cheesy. And while cheesy sums up the 80s perfectly, the movie doesn't have to play out like a bad 80s TV show.

Edit: The ending didn't improve my opinion of the movie. But the mid-credits scene is the best part of the whole film.

Murphy reused it in Sunshine: he created it for 28 Days Later. I think the arrangement in Sunshine is its apotheosis though. I've never got tired of it, as long as the scene is awesome enough to justify it.

WW84 is a bit too long, a bit too silly (except where it is a bit maudlin), a bit too VFX-ey, and apparently Patty Jenkins has a thing for scenery-chewing villains.

I still enjoyed it.

Is it canon for Diana to fly like Superman? Swinging from lightning looked really cool, but...

I wanted more of Kristen Wiig's character. The movie did a great job of introducing her and establishing her character. Then she kind of just disappeared for much of the back half of the movie as the focus shifted to Pedro Pascal's mugging. I don't blame him, BTW, I have no doubt that was the direction he received, given David Thewlis' overstated villainy in the first movie.

The kid who played young Diana was awesome (again). She didn't have much dialogue, but she did a great job communicating with her face in reaction shots.

The kid who played Alistair was atrocious. Not sure if that was editing or what, because he has quite a bit of experience for a young fella.

But I still enjoyed it!

WW84 was... okay. Considering the first film, that's definitely a disappointment. Wonder Woman the character is a favorite and I like Gadot's portrayal, but if it had been a different main character, not sure I would have made it through it. It's too bad it didn't take inspiration from the '80s and make a 90 minute film.

Spoilery movie article

In her original comic book incarnation, Diana couldn’t fly, but Wonder Woman has never been a character to accept limitations. During the Silver Age of Comics, Diana learned how to glide using the air currents, but it wasn’t until after the Crisis on Infinite Earths reboot that Diana full-on flew. In her post-Crisis origin story by George Perez, Diana was gifted the ability to fly from Hermes.

I enjoyed it, But the travel aspect really annoyed me. The Smithsonian just happen to have a jet Philly fueled that they could take they had enough fuel to fly all the way to Egypt from Washington DC, then they could fly back to Washington to meet with Barbara at the record store place all within a few hours. It was weird it didn’t make any sense.
Then the Lord could go to that secret base with the satellite dish but within a few minutes be back to find his son who happen to still be just wandering the streets after the whole issue in Washington DC that seemed odd as well.

Agree. OK. Better than some DC stuff, not as good as the first WW. And while I liked the first WW quite a bit, I didn't like it nearly as much as most in the media seemed to. DC is still playing in a lower sports league than Marvel is.

I think the scene that seemed the most heartfelt was her learning to fly.

I will say that until technology gets better, cat humans should be avoided on screen.

And I was creeped out a bit about the conversation with the dude she'd force overwritten his personality with Steve's there at the end. Dude totally didn't realize he was sexually used by Wonder Woman.

Action scenes I thought were terrible. Looked liked she was just floating around. No momentum.

Disappointment for sure. I swear I saw people on Twitter 2-3 weeks ago that saw the previews said it was amazing. Umm, what.

I think DC gets graded on a curve sometimes because somebody needs to compete with Marvel.

I enjoy many of these movies. Shazam was fun, WW was fun, etc. But none except some of the Nolan Dark Knight stuff gets past the lower third of the Marvel quality level for me. So maybe Thor/Thor Dark World/The Incredible Hulk level.

(And for the record, none of the Marvel movies are "bad". So the lower third of their stuff is fine to me.)

Yeah, I don’t know why but it seems like the VFX in both Wonder Woman movies was done on a budget or something. Especially noticeable in the human fighting scenes. The non-mocap elements are poorly animated and some shots are even poorly (unrealistically) lit.

I’m looking forward to the Corridor Digital guys having a look at these movies in their VFX Artists React series.

Wow. We just finished this movie and it was really REALLY bad. It’s right up there with some of the worst for me. I’m not even sure it’s better than Justice League or X-Men Apocalypse! Hell, I enjoyed Batman vs Superman more, and Thor The Dark World is Shakespeare next to the story and writing for this film.

I didn’t love the first one, but overall it was very good. But I’m staggered at the dip in quality for this movie. It seems according to IMDB they didn’t use the original writer. I wonder if there were other behind the scenes issues, or just the case of letting the director go as over the top as they want because the first one was a hit.
