Rocket League Catch All

The things I suck at in Rocket League are countless. The one that pisses me off the most is that I don't have a plan when I am about to get to the ball. That leads to me usually banging it down the field, giving control to an opponent or tossing it at the goal which always results in an opponent getting control of it.

Along with not having a plan, I don't have good skills in ball-handling. If I were better at controlling the ball once I have it and better at thinking about what to do with it once I do have it, I would be much happier with my play.

If I got better at those 2 things, then I could move on to the 100+ other things I suck at.

Sounds like a lot of work. I think I'll go take my 3D printer apart.

It's fair to say that if RL feels like work then don't. Definitely the most important point. It's one of the main reasons I took a month off recently.

Well we still love playing with you guys, that's not work.

D'ORKTAGNAN!

Mix and Broken, get in the habit of toggling ballcam on and off. Think of it as turning your head in football, soccer, hockey, whatever. Personally I toggle ballcam more than I use the stick, but I do both. If you find yourself right under the ball, staring up at it, thinking, oh god now what, turn ballcam off and get to a better position.

You guys have brought a much needed levity to the GWJ discord channel.

I’ve said in the past that we lost a lot of the heart of that group a while ago and it got too serious. It’s nice to see it becoming more of a fun group again. It’s really too bad so many people moved on before we realized that tho.

It would be amazing to make that group, especially bottle rockets night, more inviting to more players again. It was easier when we had enough people to split into 2 separate games and it was definitely easier before Psyonix added so many in game things you can’t earn if you play private matches.

Things like that cube mode help but I wish they had an official casual playlist that rotated between those sort of modes so you could still take over a lobby with friends but you’d be able to do in game challenges and rocket pass levels along the way.

I’m a broken record on this subject.

tboon?! Another VA chapter player. Gotta yell at him.

What day and time does the "casual" crew show up? I still suck but my fondness for GWJ rocket league is undeterred.

Almost every night around 9 or 10 EST voice chat on Discord (Rocket Cars) starts up and we start coordinating. We mostly play casual mode 3s or 4s depending on how many there are. Sometimes people break off to play 2s or a tournament. Sometimes we switch to a private server to try weird game modes and imitators and to split up Boss and me (we play splitscreen Xbox and are forced onto the same team in normal online games).

Often "Bottle Rockets" night on Saturday is more casual than usual and played on a private server but sometimes that happens other nights as well if enough people are around and want to.

Is there much of a Euro-GWJ-er scene for this? Much I'd like to join with the 9pm EST crew, regular sessions at 2am are going to be few and far between

Spikeout plays on PS4 from GMT. He helped me learn the ropes a few years ago. If you're on PS4 voice+team is easy. If not, gave to get on discord on phone or something.

There are definitely a few Euro-GWJ-er RL players I know of but I have no idea if they play together.

If you manage to get ahold of a few other Euro-GWJ-ers and find a time that works let us know and maybe (especially on weekends) some people in NA could attend as well. How many hours earlier would we have to play for it to work for you and others outside NA?

Be harder for you west coasters. Usually US East +4 or +5 works for Europe.

I usually play at about 10pm UK time, which I *think* is 5pm EST and 2pm PST. Certainly don't want folk making a special effort on my account though!

Add Mixolyde and BrokenNocturne to your epic list. We play randomly throughout the day. Just ping me on discord if you see one of us on.

Will do! I have it on Steam, but I presume crossplay works. Actually, is there a point to playing on Steam? Do my items and progress carry over to Epic?

You just have to sign in on the Epic site and link your primary Rocket League account, be it Steam or console, and yes, everything is shared now. Link all the different accounts you have on Epic and you can share items, except for console exclusives, and season/ranked progress.

Evample was my favorite RL player and content creator in 2020. He's a solo freestyler (which is what I try to be) and he does it all in high level ranked and even shows in his main videos how to make these plays safer and recover from them. His 1v1 series was especially great. It's not about just going for insane plays and not worrying about defense or winning, he does all that too. He just manages to pull off insane stuff along the way. His defensive plays are often incredible as well.

Anyone have tips on making small adjustments? Particularly when chasing down a ball headed toward your own goal that you want to knock away and not in. I tend to overreact and then over correct in those situations a lot.

Don't panic.
Know where your teammates are. Don't just focus on the ball your teammate might be about to hit it. By you barreling in you may thwart the clear and own goal still.
Take a wider angle, especially while rotating to the back post.

Do you have a particular clip/replay of a situation you were in that we could comment on?

In general get comfortable doing diagonal forward flips so you can flip to the side of the ball instead of directly at it while still moving at full speed towards your net. You can boost the whole time while diagonally flipping as well because your car's boost never points forward during diagonal flips.

If you get to supersonic before you get to the ball don't keep flipping as you can't change direction while mid-flip. While you do need flips to get up to speed you want to flip as little as possible so you are in control of your direction. Essentially diagonal flip with boost to get to supersonic then stop flipping and just coast supersonic if you have time.

Landing in a power slide after a diagonal flip can allow you to adjust the angle of your car quickly as you land without losing momentum so you can flip into the ball more accurately at the end.

All those small movement mechanics add up and give you way more options when you need them but it takes a while to build the muscle memory. If you want to learn that stuff just start with one and learn the rest progressively after you've got the first one integrated into your gameplay.

One thing I did is I spent a lot of time playing without boost at all to force myself to learn movement mechanics and recoveries faster. Not everyone's idea of a fun time but it's paid off a lot for me and TBH I like the challenge of not using boost. It's one of the few challenges I've kept doing over the years.

Does a diagonal flip require air roll, or is it just a 45 degree angle on the left thumbstick?

Mixolyde wrote:

Just a 45 degree flip without air roll.

You CAN do a diagonal flip with directional air roll. Just hold a directional air roll button and forward flip and it will do a diagonal flip without you having to move your thumb stick to the side. This is one of the tricks people use to make the “fastest flip” easier to do since you don’t have to be as precise with your left stick.

A diagonal flip using directional air roll is also the trick to the JZR flick. Similar idea, hold directional air roll while carrying the ball but back flip instead of forward flip and if you time it right the ball goes to the moon.

I second this. Turn off ball cam and look to see where your team is. If you have one or two people back in better position to play the ball, then just rotate behind them and trust them to play the ball.

(sarcasm)
I prefer to drive to the middle of the net, slam into my teammate who is already there, slowly turn around inside the net without power slide, then sit in the middle of the net looking forward so it is equally hard for me to block any incoming shot. Just kidding, I don't play defense. Why would I go to net when I could be flying off the roof or demoing people instead? Definitely make sure if you ever drive back towards your own side of the field (for boost of course) you drive behind the ball so you can demo the attackers and clear the ball into your back wall. Bonus points if you demo an opponent, bump a teammate, grab the big boost, AND hit the ball into your own back wall all at the same time.
(/sarcasm)

going through my old clips, nostalgia.

miss you Doc.

one more, see mix we all start rough as you will see in this clip from 4 years ago

Love that hat, though!

I was digging through my old Xbox clips and in a lot of them I'm using a shark fin topper, the disconnect symbol antenna, and the flower boost (that rainbow colored one). Not the worst choices but pretty questionable TBH. I think I used the flower boost because it was one of the most annoying sounding ones and the disconnect symbol for obvious reasons.
