Immortals Fenyx Rising

Playing on the Switch and wow it is ugly. I am not a graphics snob but it is quite noticeable. It doesn’t look as good as Breath of the Wild which came out, what three or more years ago.

I am enjoying the story, world and gameplay so it isn’t a deal breaker but I am hoping there is a patch to improve it.

Jesus?
Seriously? THAT bad?

Yeah, and there are also frame rate dips that even I notice and I can’t tell in those videos where they show 30 vs 60 any difference. Which to me means it is dropping below 30.

Urgh.... now you made me wonder if I should return this to amazon before I open it

well I will say this as well I am enjoying it enough that I keep playing. The other things (story, etc.) are carrying me through.

I beat my first wraith today (a miniboss), which seemed to be designed to teach you the parry system. Once I became less aggressive and parried his attacks, it all came together. I'm starting to feel very powerful, except, when I get hit I can lose a ton of health. For me, at normal, the game has been a good level of challenge.

Did you go to the actual mini-boss lair or was it out in the world? The wraiths are like shadows of a mini-boss. The wraith fights in the world keep repeating until you kill the actual mini-boss in their lair. It felt like every hour or two, the big bad would send the same wraith at me, until I finally killed the original, which was probably the toughest battle I fought in the game in my 12hrs so far. I think there is one wraith type for each gods’ part of the map.

There have been a few things I’ve either missed the game informing me about or the game just failed to. There are so many upgrade types and currencies. I was many hours into the game before I realized you could upgrade the effects of potions at the same place you craft them. I have a mount I didn’t know about for along time. It hasnt been super useful. The map doesn’t seem set up for traveling by horse.

It was in the lair. The first time he showed up unexpectedly, he nearly killed me. The second time he did. It was time to take the fight to him.

After playing through the first island I do want to revise my opinion a bit. It is still not pretty game when compared to miles morales or breath of the wild or other current GEN games, But it has a quirky charm which seems to work for it.

I am still seeing framing drops that I think they should fix with a patch, but the overall art style is making me ok with the less beautiful graphics

To expand: I feel that people who loved Breath of the Wild (BotW) and are looking to "scratch that itch" are likely going to bounce off of Fenyx. much like people who loved Ocarina of Time had similar complaints with Darksiders. I do not blame them, as the games are similar at their surface, and it invites comparison. On the podcast, Austin said that if he hadn't wrote a review of BotW, and spent that time understanding why he liked that game so much, that playing Fenix would have helped him articulate his love for the game.

I just wish that our criticism wasn't so narrow. We often critique games based on comparisons to another game, but there are so few that we use: Zelda, Dark Souls, Metrodivania, Rogue, "Ubisoft," "Sony Prestige." I just feel that I'm going to get quickly tired of people comparing Fenyx to BotW in a very dismissive fashion.

Based on what I've read, the comparison to Breath of the Wild is very shallow. It does not have a lot of the cooler features from Breath of the Wild (nor does it try to), it has a sort of similar aesthetic(?), and maybe similar traversal? I don't think it's a good comparison.

I'm a decent way into the game, maybe 15 hours, and I've found the opposite. Playing this game has highlighted the things I didn't like about BoTW because I prefer the Fenyx approach. I like that Fenyx streamlines or eliminates some of the cumbersome parts of BoTW, like weapon degradation, cooking, and environmental effects like climbing in rain or lighting striking you. It makes it much less of a sandbox and less of a sim, but helps to focus on the fun.

A tip for people new to the game, take your time and do side stuff but do Bolt from the Blue quest as soon as possible. It unlocks cool stuff

Game looks good! I'll pick it up some day.

Yesterday I got to a vault, and as I neared the end, it told me that I did not have the correct godly power to get the bonus chest. After getting the rest of them today, I returned, and was still stumped on how to get to the chest. I finally broke down and watched two videos, both of which used a godly power in a way that I did not realize. There was a second part that used a different godly power in a unique way, but I figured that out on my own, Mechanical spoiler ahead for the one I saw in the video:

Spoiler:

Ares's Wrath can be used to essentially triple jump, and get up to otherwise unreachable places.

Funny, it makes me feel the opposite. I LOVED Darksiders.

Let me make a pitch for some upgrades I have found useful:

The first upgrade for the Apollo Arrow is "Preciiosn Control" which allows you to control the speed of the arrows. There are many puzzles that have you flying the arrow around, and this helps quite a bit.

The first Godly Power I purchased that wasn't given in the opening area was Ares's Wrath, which can help build the stun meter. However, I have used Hephaistos's Hammer a lot more since that straight up deals a ton of damage.

There is an upgrade to the gather skill that not only has you grab multiple items at once, but also allows you to automatically grab items when you are mounted.

Speaking of skills, the Glide Boost seems essential for getting around the island.

Finally there is an Enhanced Dodge skill that felt great once I picked it up. I now dart around the battlefield with ease.

Wow, the

Spoiler:

phoenix

is super powerful with its ability to build up stun on an enemy. Give it the upgrade to

Spoiler:

produce stamina replenishing balls when it attacks and it’s pretty much a constant use weapon.

It made my first shade or whatever the major enemies are a walk in the park.

It's also cool because

it sounds like TIE fighter laser blasts when it attacks

This game is cool

It looks you can snag the ps4/Xbox one versions for $40 with a coupon through amazon.

I'm in. PS4 version gets the free PS5 upgrade so I'll just install it there. Probably next week, with some stuff on the pile right now.

Let us know what you think of the game Stele!

In case you were dense like me, you can change the appearance of your armor to any other armor set, not just a set in the same collection.

I keep putting more and more time into this game. It's turning into my sleeper hit of 2020.

One of the side quests is to defeat all four wraiths, and while the first one was difficult, they have become easier and easier as the power level increases. This feels like a game where you can get overpowered in many different ways, due to the interesting bonuses on equipment. In some ways, it reminds me of Kingdoms of Amalur.

Defeating the four wraiths gives some very sweet armor, if you have been upgrading your Godly Powers.

Spoiler:

At level 4 armor, the chest gives +80% charging speed with Godly Powers, and +4 combo meter with Godly Powers. The level 4 helm gives +26% damage with the powers and +30% stun. This makes the charged hammer and charged Ares Wrath extremely quick and can put out massive damage and stun.

My Ubi+ subscription runs out in 2 days. I've freed 3 out of the 4 gods, but I played too much of the game over the past several days and burned out on it. It probably didn't help that I was playing a lot of AC Valhalla right before this, so a bit of fatigue from open worldness may be happening too.

That aside, this game was such a nice surprise. I'll pick it up when it is super cheap and finish it off.

I want to start this game nowwwww!!!
Cant wait for my Switch lite to arrive.

I will leave my "normal switch" docked (as it has alwysa been) for my Wife and son to keep playing their stuff. I will have my own time with my Switch lite and hopefully this will help me with my due games.

I'm almost done with the game. I've reached a clearly signposted "Point of No Return." The game tells you it will make a save at that point, and you can come back to that save to keep exploring the world (and playing the future DLC). I've put about 40 hours into it, but that includes being stuck on several late game vaults that prioritize precise platforming.

The DLC shop offered up an "Adventure Time" themed outfit and mount. That particular crossover seemed weird.

I've loved my time with the game and the story and Fenyx has grown on me. I kinda don't want it it end, but I have seen most of what the game has to offer. This was a great surprise at the and of the year.

I saw a lot of places had it available for $40. That’s well worth it for a charming game with fun combat and puzzles. I hope a lot of people check it out

Yeah picked this up on Epic Game Store so with the $10 coupon it was $30.

Well worth it. Really enjoying the game so far. I really like the puzzles and the combat is simplistic but fun. The main character is good (basically Kasandra from AC Odyssey) and the graphics are nice.

Did have some initial technical issues. Game ran ok in Borderless window but in Full Screen I had a higher fps but it was stuttering like crazy - unplayable. So popped on V-Sync in Full Screen and everything smoothed out. Guess the game doesn't like G-Sync. As my PC is pretty old now (i5-2550k / 1070) its nice to see some current release still look and play well.

I plan to put a lot of time in to this game over the next few days.

My feelings about it have improved and improved as I play more. It is a fun game. Well worth anyone's time.
