Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

I forgot to mention that we also completed The Keepers and The Staircase. Both made for uncomfortable viewing at times. Both highlight the corruption and the immoral actions of those we're lead to believe in and to trust implicitly. They're also hard to look away from. You need to know more. You hope for revelations and for belated justice.

It is totally going to sweep the awards shows... set design, costuming, music, not to mention writing and acting. And omg that ceiling effect is so beautiful!

I'll admit that I was bummed to discover:

Spoiler:

there is no real world counter part to Beth Harmon

I'm not sure how that's surprising, considering we still hear things like "girls don't have any natural inclination or talent for chess" in 2020.

The show not only had me rekindle my interest in chess for the first time since I was around about 8 years old, but it also had me dig into the subject touched upon above.

Best Female Chess Players of All-Time is a tidy bite-sized rundown which one could lead on from.

The Queen's Gambit: Why there has never been a female chess world champion is an informative read, with hope for the future.

Judit more than holds her own against the absolute best.

A couple of decades off, but yes, that woman did exist and features prominently in one of the two articles RnRClown linked and in which she directly addresses the rampant sexism I was referring to and which kept her from being crowned world champion.

"The way the boys treat Beth in the series is a dream; sadly, the reality is not like that," Judit Polgar, a Hungarian former professional chess player and the only woman to have cracked the Top 10 in the game's 15-century history, has said.

Beth's character has many similarities with the late American grandmaster, and former world champion, Bobby Fischer. Often described as one of the best players of all time, Fischer was also known for controversial comments he made including this one from 1963: "Women are terrible chess players ... I guess they're just not so smart."

Apologies you are absolutely correct, Chess has like almost everything in the world a very long way to come.

My octopus teacher

... is amazing!

I should watch it.

So good

Watched the Christmas Chronicles 2 and didn't like it as much as the first one. The first one was Christmas classic for me that challenged to dethrone Elf as my favorite xmas movie. Didn't really like the focus on Deadpool's friend. I liked seeing Goldie in it but she didn't add much for me. The elves were cute, I want one but there might have been to much of them. Considering the story I guess they needed a lot of elves but like I said I didn't care for the story. Santa Snake was Santa Snake, what more could you want.

Probably watch it again. Might have been in a bad mood because the world is coming to a end because the bringer of doom has escaped his prison realm. I hate that guy.

Nah I've heard several people say CC2 wasn't good.

But a lot of people are liking Jingle Jangle.

Really good. And gorgeous!

Galaxy Quest has just cropped up on Netflix here in the UK, I've never seen it before on any of the streaming services.

I can only recommend that you stop what you are doing right now - right now! - and go and watch it.

We also thought Christmas Chronicles 2 was nowhere near as good as the first one.

There's a really nice Galaxy Quest documentary on Amazon Prime (at least in the UK). I found that a great watch as a fan of the film.

Well, if I watched "Bright" just so I could watch Lindsay Ellis' take on that movie afterwards, I guess I can watch this one so I can see Maggie Mae Fish's take here.

Is that on Prime? Every time I’ve gone looking for that it’s been asking me to pay for it.

Yes. It's called "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary"

I watched Ghosts of War so you don't have to. It's not awful, but it's not super great either. It does have Theo Rossi in it who I think is turning out to be one of my favorite "ohhh.. where did I see that guy in before?" actors. The story is ok, but it does have a pretty dumb twist at the end which made me groan a bit.

Us as well, but I do enjoy seeing Kurt Russel being a cool Santa.

OMG watch it! It is so good that watching a video lampooning it will only make me want to watch it again

IMO "Bright" was painfully mediocre. Not bad so much, just off-puttingly less than what it could have been.

Uff! I wouldn’t watch that video unless you think that clubbing baby seals is fun and entertaining. The octopus one, not the Bright one.

I watched it earlier this week and totally agree with you. It's like they either didn't know what kind of scary movie they were making or they grossly overestimated how engaging the twist was going to be.

I would have much preferred to watch a non-twist version and see how they finished the main story line.

My exact thoughts when I got to the end

Watched the christmas British Bakeoff special with the Derry Girls actors. Immediately started watching Derry Girls, and it's great.

I thought Ghosts of War was pretty good for a low budget flick, the late twist was bizarre but still entertaining

Derry Girls is fantastic!

Who are the others besides Bev Marsh?
