PlayStation 5 Games You Can Play Right Now

There are so many games I keep thinking, maybe I’ll buy that and play it over Christmas but then think I should wait and play it on a PS5 whenever I finally decide to get one. Ghost of Tsushima is high on that list.

I've also been thinking as such. I, too, have bumped Ghosts of Tsushima until a potential PS5 acquisition. Control is another. God of War, makes it three.

I'd be curious to know how Final Fantasy 7 Remake performs on PS5, especially the texture pop-in that was so noticeable at times.

Hopefully they start doing some more meaningful improvements to first party games.

Played GT Sport for a bit last night and it doesn't seem to be doing anything new. Would be rad if they updated it to work with the DualSense.

I know that games will look better on the ps5 but considering how good they look on the ps4 and the fact that they were optimized for the ps4 I think waiting for to play ghost of tsushima, and God of war is dening joy.

Well God of War is free with that PS5 collection, so I passed buying it on BF sales last week since I had the PS5 incoming. Going to fire that up this weekend I hope, got it installed last night.

I want those triggers to do more stuff. I dunno, some feedback at full speed in Rocket League, something. I'm not even sure what I want, but I want more after playing Astro's.

I mentioned this in the original PS5 thread, but to repeat: Control is much nicer on the PS5 than it was on my original PS4. It had significant framerate problems in areas with a lot of enemies, but performs well now. I imagine the pending PS5-native release will be even nicer. (I'm expecting upgraded textures maybe? Not that it doesn't look good now.)

Also, if you were an early adopter, there have been a lot of patched improvements. Especially the "Assist Mode" settings if, like me, the challenge turned to frustration at points.

However, as we worked out in the Control thread: if you buy/bought the PS4 "Ultimate Edition," you get a free upgrade to the PS5 version. But those who (like me) bought the original release, even if with the season pass?... no free upgrade.

Yup. And driving games are a perfect use case scenario. Can emulate brake pressure, wheel spin, lockups, ABS, grip, etc. Haptics can, as we've seen, be used to communicate surface type. Imagine a rally game where you can feel the little pings of stones hitting the undercarriage in your hands. Or feel when you're on newer / older tarmac, or switching from gravel to tarmac.

Yeah, I didn't list control because it does seem much better on the ps5. I will say that all the comments I have seen are about improved frame rates not about improved visuals (like the talk about miles morales and ray tracing).

Played a bit more Sackboy last night and it's pretty fun. Feels like a bit of a mix between LittleBigPlanet and Tearaway. The platforming is significantly improved from LittleBigPlanet with jumping feeling far less floaty and the controls overall much more tight.

Don't tease me. I like platformers in general but I loathed LBP for it's crap jumping and controls. Be nice if the series was actually fun now.

r013nt0 wrote:

Same as hell. Love everything about LBP right up until touching the controls.

LBP is definitely not about tight platforming jumps, that's for sure. Any user levels centered around jumping can be avoided at all costs.

Sackboy, which I haven't played, clearly has tighter jumping mechanics than LBP. This is likely all due to it being an actual platforming game and not a design suite that has platforms.

WRC9 for PS5 is already doing a lot of this very well. Which is good since my damn T500 RS wheel isn’t compatible!

Oh nice. I didn't like the handling model of WRC8 very much, when compared to, say, DiRT Rally / Rally 2, but maybe I'll give 9 a shot.

It is quite better than 8, and I’m a DR2 junky.

I'm less concerned with the visual fidelity than the framerate jump. I'm waiting for Ghosts until I can pick up a PS5 for 60 FPS.

Eurogamer talked about this specifically for WRC9 a few weeks ago: The Playstation 5's Dualsense is a revelation for racing games.

Rad. That sounds promising as hell. Maybe I'll pick that up.

Still want them to update GT Sport, though!

I just never had the time.

If you keep not having the time for God of War, that's okay.

I actually played it a bit back when it came out, I enjoyed the first 4 hours or so but once I went to another dimension and started fighting Valkyries or something it started giving me goofy Avengers vibes so I dropped it.

Thank you. I feel less guilty for a gifted copy which remains untouched.

You should make time for God of War

Yep. Phenomenal game, if you like that kind of thing.

Two of the songs in Astro's Playroom are real bangers, too (GPU Jungle and SSD Speedway). I'm having a hard time getting them out of my head.

Edit: Did anyone else notice the gigantic dot-matrix robot face wayyyy off in the distance, who was singing the GPU Jungle lyrics the whole time?

GPU Jungle is so good. I sat and watched the GPU face in the background sing along for an inappropriately long time.

So that's a "yes" then.

I was a fan of the original two God of War entries. I loved the aesthetics and the artistry. There were some great vistas, and some great character models. The combat in tandem with the camera angle equalled proper arcade goodness. There was a story to follow, I think, which I recall as Angry Person Takes on the Gods. Much like DOOM it was simply there as an afterthought to sew various scenes together.

Then again, I never played any of the following entries thereafter. So, perhaps the change of camera angle, with more methodical movement, and verbose story elements (comparatively so) were needed to refresh the series. It worked for most everyone. I just couldn't warm to the idea of it. Every trailer made Kratos seem like a dick, and Junior seem like an irritation, amongst a Soulsborne combat blueprint. The gifted copy became a coaster.

Oh he’s a dick at the start of the game for sure but that’s a big step down from being the massive dick he was in those earlier games and, thanks to junior, he doesn’t necessarily stay that way.

They did a much better job in this game of making Kratos more than just angry man. I admit I stopped playing one of the other ones because he was such an a-hole that I didn't even want to keep watching what they would have him do next.

However in this one he is much more of a real person. He has remorse, guilt, but also joy and pride - way more emotions than he had in the the original games.

RnRClown wrote:

It super, really, absolutely is not that. At all. In any way. Even a little.

It's more akin to a light and semi-shallow version of a character action game. Devil May Cry. Bayonetta. Vanquish.

Y'all be stirring my interest to try the game at long last. Kratos evolves past being a dick and becomes more than anger personified. What! Not to mention stronger similarities to DMC and Bayonetta than Souls or 'Borne. What! I have been terribly misled.

Combat is very similar to the two original GoW games you played. Somewhere between that and the others I mentioned.

I could have been more explicit: if upgrading the hardware made the visuals better, my middle aged eyes couldn't tell. Just the framerates. (And load times.) I assume that would be the case with most/all PS4 games: the textures are optimized for what the PS4 could do, and it doesn't attempt to do better. Maybe some procedurally generated stuff (like fire or foliage) could be improved by more horsepower?... but I'm not expert enough to be sure.

Given the art style of Control, I'm curious to see what, if anything, they'll attempt to improve graphically. Character models are the only thing I can see them getting a lot of mileage out of improving.
