Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Season 6 of Community is as solid a season as any of them (except 4). It also has some brilliantly surreal outros to a lot of the episodes.

Agreed. There's a lot to like in season 6 of Community. It feels different, though. Like everyone involved finally knew this was the end.

Hey guys, I just finished a show that's pretty good. Anybody heard of Breaking Bad?

I know I'm a bit late. One of these days I might watch The Americans, which is also on my list of stuff I'll probably really like but just haven't gotten to.

(Also, is El Camino good? Probably watch it later this week.)

The Americans is another amazing show.

And since you liked Breaking Bad you should probably pencil in watching Better Call Saul sometime in 2027. I really enjoyed Breaking Bad, but kinda have to admit that Better Call Saul is, well, better.

I had a hard time with Better Call Saul at first, because it's more Breaking Bad, but at the same time not. It sits in this weird uncanny valley between expectation and experience. It's not that the differences between it and BB are bad by any means, but it's like that thing where you pop a candy in your mouth expecting an M&M but get a Skittle instead, or vice versa. It's jarring.

I eventually came to like it a lot, but it took some adjusting of expectations. And tbh, the show doesn't do itself any favors with its periodic cameos and in-jokes and lore-drops for BB fans.

I couldn't even begin to tell you which show is "better" in any kind of objective sense. And of course, it's not a fair comparison since BB is complete and BCS still has more to come.

Yep. On my list.

Finished season one of Dark over the weekend. We won't be watching season 2. It was good enough to keep our interest through most of the season, but by episode 8 of 10 it really started dragging and overall the "ending" was very unsatisfying.

Knock Knock is terrible! As much as I love Keanu Reeves, it was so uncomfortable to watch that I quit about a third of the way through. My wife suffered through it and said it didn't get better and reading the synopsis afterward, I definitely agree.

Spoiler:

Of course they f*cking took the dog, grrrrrrr!

If that is what you are looking for, watch Hard Candy instead. It is another uncomfortable movie that f*cks you up in a much better way. That movie is barely worth the discomfort but at least the point isn't tacked on and is supported nearly too late but much better.

It is painfully bad.

Knock Knock's entire reason for existence is to show the lead women's breasts, and to show the women acting flirty and "sexy" (like, movie sexy, not actual sexy). That's it. No other reason. Oh, and it tries to hide behind some Hollywood dude's idea of female empowerment or something? Or maybe just domination? I honestly wasn't paying attention much after the first ten minutes. The plot is completely forgettable, and I don't remember the women's motivation.

Oh I just looked it up - written, directed and produced by Eli Roth. So yeah.

We are the Champions is pretty damn great. 4 episodes in or so. Watching the Yo Yo one now.

It's the kind of daft tv that is needed right now. Although not a fan of the voice over guy.

Have to doff my hat to Hannibal. One episode per night for the past few weeks, and I finally finished it all last night. After S1 I was a bit lukewarm, but S2 and S3 are incredible. They really went for it, didn't they? One of the most haunting TV scores I can remember too.

Don't forget about Better Call Saul.
I think the next season will be its last.

The ending is satisfying... in the last season.

It is BCS's final season. But they haven't done any filming, so I'd be surprised if we saw it before 2022. I just know that Jonathan Banks needs to stay as safe as possible. He is a treasure of a human being. Also, the final season is apparently bumping up to a 13 episode season, as opposed to their usual 10. It is probably my favorite show on TV for quite a while now.

I rather enjoyed Buffy's last season. Angel's last episode had some issues, but I still enjoyed it.

Oh dang I just realized that the evil corp in Angel is basically the corp from cabin in the woods.

Wolfram and Hart?
(or Wolf Ram and Hart...)

That blew my mind when I first watched that episode back in the day. I thought it was so clever I still think about it every now and then. So, so smart.

The wife and I binged 4 episodes of Queen's Gambit.
Worth ALL the hype! (100% on rotten tomatoes!?)

Yep. Keep going solid show.

I hated the first season of The Crown but princess Dianna interest me. I have a picture of her on my wall and bought one of those special magazine holders to hold a times magazine of her.

Are the seasons that cover Princess Dianna good and if so which seasons does she first show up in?

She's new this season, and it seems to be okay so far. Haven't finished it yet.

As someone who didn't really understand all the Dianna love, I've enjoyed watching the season with my partner. She kinda has to explain some stuff for me though.

I've had

Spoiler:

"Uptown Girl"

stuck in my head off and on for a week thanks to the new season of The Crown.

The You’re Wrong About podcast did an amazing multiple part series on Diana which really captures what was special about her and debunks a few of the myths, but mostly is a great telling of the story which treats both Diana and Charles as human people caught up in a toxic situation.

Mrs Sorb has been watching The Crown and I’ve had to explain so much recent UK History to her while watching it I feel like I’ve been watching it with her.

And yes, we’re both British. And lived in the UK all our lives. Our education system has a total blind to any UK history post WW2. It’s also not entirely factually accurate (the show) which means I’ve had to do a lot of googling and spend time on Wikipedia etc trying to separate fact from fiction.

Watched Jingle Jangle and liked it. Liked the music and acting. Story wasn't very strong. The toys had very little screen time. From the trailer I thought one would the focus of the movie. Ending wasn't very good. I know I said I liked the movie. The movie looked good. I liked the little jokes. Thirsty lady amused me.

I have quite vivid memories of my East-End Londoner father shouting "bloody Tories!" and talking about how we should get rid of the Royal Family. Accordingly, I didn't grow up with the Royalty being held in high regard. Intellectually, I can understand their appeal, especially to foreigners. Emotionally, I couldn't care less about them.

Several years after I came to the USA, I remember some American friends breathlessly rushing up to me to inform me that Diana had died in a car crash. It was like some combination of an intervention and a suicide watch. They were mystified when I shrugged and went on with my day. I don't think I'll ever entirely understand the American fascination with the Royals. That said, I do have a lot of respect for the Queen and how she has lived her life.

Yep. Keep going solid show.

And done...

Neither he or you are alone there in the UK - While I’d hold that The Queen herself is held in (almost) universal high regard, the Royal Family itself is more of a mixed bag.

The national outpouring of grief over the death of Princess Diana left a lot of people over here rather bemused by it all (obviously that includes me!) - I distinctly remember going to learn how to Juggle the day of her funeral, trying very hard to avoid anything to do with it. Believe me I wasn’t alone.

And no, I still can’t juggle.

I know that there are bonafide royal fans here in the US, but I feel like for a lot of us its more of a novelty. Sort of like watching a horse play cards. Part of the fascination is not quite understanding the why and how of it all.

We've been watching an episode every now and then with Queen's Gambit which is absolutely phenomenal. It's definitely one to give the episodes room to breathe, I feel.

I love both where it goes and where it shows restraint. I've connected well with Harmon. The camera work is great. The storytelling is wonderful. What a gem.

It is totally going to sweep the awards shows... set design, costuming, music, not to mention writing and acting. And omg that ceiling effect is so beautiful!

I'll admit that I was bummed to discover:

Spoiler:

there is no real world counter part to Beth Harmon
