OMG I got my ship last night and I'm a pirate, ARR!

Haha, crazy fun combat.

This is a good one.

I'm minor annoyed with only one quick bar as I want to grab one more shield-break skill from warrior tree and am full already. Looks like that's something that unlocks later at level 15 and I'm only 8 or so. Do I get the skill and just swap in battles when I need it? Or just wait? Another way to trigger the power? Bah.

The quick bar (1, 2, 3, 4 on kb) is only for the active abilities you find in the world, everything in skill trees is passive, you can grab how many you want there.

Unless I misunderstood you.

You only get a second set of quick-slots after doing a certain thing which...actually takes most of the game to get...

Spoiler:

Fully upgrading the Spearhead by taking out the Cult of Kosmos

Yeah pyxi was on it. You can only have 4 active abilities from warrior+assassin trees to start with. Apparently you have to be level 15 and do some quest before you get a 2nd melee quick bar.

Kick and heal are pretty awesome. Ranged assassinate and vanish too. And now I want shield break at level 8 or 9 but have nowhere to put it to use it. Although I haven't had to use heal much lately, I am starting my first conquest. From the tips I read that seems to be where you'll need it, big battle that you can't always do from stealth. Guess I'll see how it goes.

The main enemies I've seen with shields so far were on boats. So I was able to just kick them overboard haha. But on land that shield breaker skill might be useful soon.

Spoiler:

It actually only takes 3 extra cultists to unlock the second bar. I thought it was more, but nope, only 3.

Spoiler:

That's...weird because It took me 22 artefact fragments to upgrade from level 4 to 5, which was where the second ability wheel unlocked for me. That was basically the remainder of the cultists, including confronting the mastermind

Spoiler:

Yeah, currently replaying it and unlocked it on my second upgrade. Maybe they patched it? This game has gotten a lot of quality of life upgrades.

huh. well I only just completed the game last week so...can't have been a patch. Maybe something in the middle DLC? I never bought that one, i just skipped straight to Atlantis. OR maybe if this is your second playthrough it's a NG+ thing.

Spoiler:

Spear level 3 AND character level 15 are needed to unlock the second ability wheel.

I googled the 2nd shortcut bar a couple days ago. There were reports of it being buggy. Like completing the upgrade you need, and being level 15, and sometimes it still not working.

Here was one on reddit

And here's one on Ubisoft forums.

And both seemed to come to the conclusion that when you get the 2nd wheel, it may have your 1st wheel duplicated. So going into menu and unassigning from primary can help, or reassinging to the 2nd. There's a few people in there that were hitting the switch button, hearing a sound, but saying that it didn't switch. But maybe it actually did, and the skills were all the same.

Just hit 11, still got a ways to go, but I'm watching for it. Although after I got Hero Strike, I'm wondering if I even need Shield Breaker anymore? Seems like that one finishes most guys off and if it still works against enemies with shields, maybe I can focus more points somewhere else...

I used the shield breaker all the way until the end of the game. It’s super and always useful, especially against later enemies.

Shield breaker is indispensable, which annoys me a little. It is by far the best option for the one thing it does, and it doesn't do anything else, so it feels like I'm obligated to keep it around.

I never used shield breaker. I forget what it is, but there’s another ability that has the side effect of breaking guard.

Found it. I used Ring of Chaos. It does at least as much damage, is AOE, and even the first rank stuns. Stunned enemies can’t block. It doesn’t shatter the shield like rank 3 shield breaker, though.

I was never a fan of single target abilities in the warrior tree, because when I’m warrioring I’m usually surrounded.

Oh, I take that too since I am so often outnumbered. But I find everyone is such a bag of hit points that I can’t finish them before they start blocking again. If I take the shield away it’s gone for good, and then I can wear them down with normal attacks.

yep i never used shield breaker at all. My regulars were...

Big spear stabby stab
Sparta kick
Stealthy spear richochet assassin blast
and alternating between invisibility / healing depending on the situation.

..those are probably not their actual names.

So yeah did the first conquest battle yesterday. Shield breaker pretty useful there. Ring of chaos might have been too but I didn't pick that up yet. Had devestating shot for bow and used that a few times. Hero strike is great and works through shields but recharge is a bit long.

My vanish and assassinate were totally useless in that fight. Nowhere to hide that I could see. So I changed out my ability bar for the rest of that fight.

Kind of funny how the big climax of an area is the same as the prologue fight from game tutorial. Just a big mess of people. But got some nice loot after.

As for the wolf, I chose not to kill and got some interesting character revelations. That was fun.

I also was 300m from a synchronize point so I sneaked into a bit higher zone to grab that. Then I double checked my ancient stele map and saw one nearby so tried that too. Snakes were no problem even though I guess they were 15-16 and I was 12. But right as I finished I got ambushed by 2 level 16 wolves! In a panic I swung my torch and caught one on fire. I was able to climb on top of some tomb stuff and slowly take them out with arrows so I could then leave. 1 bite from them took about 1/3 of my health so I almost died to wolves haha.

I also saw Odessa and finished up her quest chain and she joined my ship as a Lt. I should have done that while the Athenians were still in charge and the leader's house was empty. Instead I had to sneak around and knock out a couple of Spartans to get the evidence for her. Guess I need to watch for that in other areas if some quests are complimentary with conquests.

And finally I got back to my ship to continue the story. Was almost immediately attacked by pirates. Took down a couple ships pretty easily. Would like to just sail around and do some more ship combat, that is fun.

All in all a pretty great weekend.

Well, Valhalla has not immediately grabbed me. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think a large part of it is that I'm playing on Stadia, and it's limited to 30 fps. Drove me crazy with Odyssey on PS4, and it's driving me crazy on Stadia.

So rather than buy Valhalla for PC, I'm going to wait 'til Stadia hardware is upgraded (or I get a Series X), and thanks to you yahoos gabbing about Odyssey here, I'm playing through Odyssey. Again.

I agonized over whether to do a New Game+ or just start from scratch, and I ended up starting from scratch. If the lack of abilities starts driving me crazy, I may just start over and go with New Game+. There's something to be said for enjoying the game the same way I did the first time around. And second. And... we won't talk about how many times I've finished the story.

It's been about ten months since I last played, so hopefully my advanced age will have caused me to forget most of the game and I can enjoy it like it's the first time!

Got another quick session in during baby nap. After I said I wanted to fight more ships, someone in town gave me a random quest to destroy 5 pirates. So I might go hunting later for that.

Exploring the next area, finding lots of little cults and cleaning them out. Took out some smaller camps for the area conquest. Also recruited a rare Lt from a quest after her ship was sunk.

Died once in combat when a +2 bounty hunter just showed up right in the middle of me clearing a camp. Then on the reload no bounty at all.

I had something like that yesterday too. When I was doing Odessa quest, a level 29 bounty hunter (with pet bear) showed up and destroyed me. I guess the mercs are walking around in mixed zones all the time but I don't know what triggers them to attack me so far outside the tiers and even the zone level range. Bug?

If you have a bounty, bounty hunters will just warp to the general vicinity if you're actively doing things like clearing camps. It's very video gamey.

yeah, plus they are all marathon sprinters until you get within combat range and they stop for a slow stroll

I didn't have an active bounty either time.

I've been pretty good about marking them, then staying away, or finding a good place to fight the 3 mercs that have been after me.

These 2 out of nowhere were just off.

I also did the take out the bounty sender once on Friday or so. Merc was closing in, in the same fort. But took the money man down and then there was just a neutral merc sitting there. Probably should have killed him to get my own rank higher but I kept clearing the fort and he wandered away.

Malaka! I hope you all realise I'm reinstalling odyssey as we speak. all 90+ gig of it.

Though truth be told some of that is that I actively miss Kassandra. Which is a strange thing to feel about a game character but, there it is.

Yeah the season pass is on sale now for 8 or 9 dollars at a couple sites. I guess the DLC is mostly for post game but I'm having a lot of fun so far and thinking I'll pick it up this week for sometime in the future.

I spent like a half hour cleaning out my SSD so I'd have room for it.

I’m in my third playthrough right now. Valhalla is for when the missus is in the mood to watch vikings, as that’s her thing, so I’ve just been enjoying this game again on the Series X.

Man, I adore the game world. Kassandra is also hard to beat.

Good to see people enjoying this. I put it down in 2018 due to FPS issues and getting bored. I played as Kassandra then and liked her well enough. I came back to it a month and a half ago or so and ended up beating it as Alexios. I didn't do DLC content, so cannot comment on that. Anywho...

It was a damn fun game. The story was all over the place, but the characters were very endearing. I loved Alexios and all the shenanigans he got up to across Greece. Him palling around with Greek legends like Sokrates was fantastic. The combat was fun and a billion times better than the old AC formula that I grew to loathe.

I'll just say don't sleep on Alexios. I don't understand why the voice actor for him gets so much hate. He's just as good as Kassandra. And often even better in situations where the actors are required to be angry.

Oh I absolutely get that. I went back to finish the DLC a couple of days ago, and I just wasn't feeling the core gameplay loop any longer. But I really love Kassandra, to the point of almost feeling bad about the impending uninstallation of the game.

That's how I felt, too. Had a great time with the game, but it was past its time when I beat the main campaign. I still loved Alexios as much as ever, but just couldn't keep doing the loop again. Same kind of guilt felt about abandoning Alexios.

How is the game on the Series X?
